Poured an opaque, dark brown with a one-finger creamy tan head that refused to settle.
The scent was a very hearty and sweet mix of raisin, plum, and candied apple. I felt like I was smelling not a beer, but a very potent dessert.
The first sip was unfortunately mostly overpowered by alcohol. It burned going down, and only towards the finish did some of the odors begin to translate to my palate. The flavor beneath the alcohol was much like toffee with a hint of raisin. My mouth was pummeled both by alcohol and a bit of fizziness, and the aftertaste was bitter without a whole lot else going on. Damn, what a disappointment.
Then I let it sit a bit.
Less alcohol burn. A little more flavor. A little more potential. But not a whole lot of depth. Sort of like having lemon flavored water instead of lemonade. The flavors were enticing, but they never really bloomed.
This is another case where I think aging will do a whole lot of good. In the meantime, I'll give Rochefort the benefit of the doubt given their clear potential as evidenced by the Rochefort 10.
