Pours a deep murky ruby/brown, almost the colour of redwood bark, or a homemade root beer. Fluffy off-white head lingers, but doesn't leave much lacing.
The nose is primarily the sweet brown sugars, with an underhint of almost fruitiness, but I don't pick up the strong raisins or caramel that others seem to be getting.
The taste follows suite, but in a very accessible manner. It starts with belgian yeasts, progressing through brown sugar with hints of dark fruits, but not as defined as other belgians I've had (I actually prefer this, it feels better blended, and I'm not super huge on the overwhelming plum/fig/raisin flavours that can come with other similar brews). There's almost an apple cider crispness lurking somewhere, and it finishes with a nice rum spiciness on the back end.
You notice the carbonation, but it's not distracting. The 9.2 is hidden amazingly well, I kept forgetting I was drinking something so big.
Overall I'm not the hugest Belgian fan, but this one is amazingly well executed and definitely sets the standard as far as I'm concerned within the style.
