Nice amber color, good clarity. Pours a MONSTER slightly off-white head, creamy and long lasting.
A slightly sweet raisin/plum aroma escapes even from the big head. Subtle hint of alcohol. Smells rich and "big" without being overpowering with malt and alcohol.
Rich malty flavor up front, great complexity of chocolate, dark fruit. Malty without being overly sweet. Nicely balanced and finishes with a slightly sweet, slightly dry, alcohol tinged plum flavor.
MF - medium body and fairly high carbonation. Nice smooth alcohol warming.
World famous for a reason. Complex flavors and no rough edges. The alcohol and carbonation help dry it out a bit and keep the maltiness under control.

Pours a hazy deep brown with a foamy khaki head that dissipates somewhat quickly.
I can smell pears, raisins, and dates as soon as I open the bottle. Notes of green apple, figs, and prunes become evident, with a fairly sweet Belgian candi sugar sweetness at the base.
Flavor reveals sharp pear and bruised apple underlying a doughy, bready malt backbone. Rich and rummy, the burnt sugar malt sweetness supports complex prune and date notes well. The finish is fairly light and dry.
Body is moderate, but the high carbonation keeps it feeling light. Alcohol warmth is a bit high.
Great ester character is balanced nicely by the malt. The carbonation is higher than I'd like, and a phenolic alcohol character emerges as it warms. Wanted to like this more, but the carbonation killed it for me.
