Poured into a chilled La Trappe goblet.
Appearance 4.0: Poured out a deep, coppery brown. Gorgeous, inch-high head quickly faded into nice swirling on top. Decent lacing. This beer bubbles like a witch's cauldron! Few times have I seen its like.
Smell 3.75: The bouquet of this beer is very subdued. What I can detect is quite nice: slight scent of chocolate, smoky grains and strange...almost apricot flavor.
Taste 3.75: Front is slightly smoky and also slightly sweet. Middle is almost completely obscured by the huge level of bubbles in this brew. I'm surprised these bottles do not explode in liquor and beer stores. What I can taste at this level is delicious: a tanin-enriched hit of sweet malt. By "tanin" I mean a deep taste of red-wine like tanins. Finish is smooth and very, very, short. Focus here is on a bit more light malt sweetness. Aftertaste is almost non-existent, but I do detect more of those delicious tanins.
Mouthfeel 3.5: Way, way too much conditioning in this beer. Too many bubbles. A shame.
Overall 3.75: It's amazing to me how so many elements of the taste sensation of beer can be accentuated or de-accentuated...so much so in either way that it becomes a distraction. In the case of this beer, the bubbles are out of control and dominate way too much of the taste sensations. A shame: this beer has many unique and appealing characteristics, but they are all overshadowed by that one thing that we take for granted with beer; carbonation.
