330 mL bottle picked up in Port Huron; 'best before' Sept. 18 2018. As someone who has never found a truly memorable dubbel, and also was a big fan of this brewery's #8, this seemed like a very necessary pick-up. Served at cellar temperature.
Pours a cloudy amber-copper colour, generating two fingers of fluffy, pillowy off-white head that maintains cohesion for a good long while. Gobs of sticky lacing cling to the glass, as well as the top of the froth - this is one of the most attractive beers I've ever seen. Very fragrant on the nose and quite spicy, with some raisin, toasted nuts, figs, maraschino cherry, banana and chocolate. Convinced so far!
Absolutely delicious; a malt bomb that leads off with notes of raisin, plum and fig before things start to get a bit spicier. Toffee and milk chocolate lead into a spicy, yeasty finish with banana, clove, cinnamon and pepper. Mild, balanced aftertaste, with some earthy hops and musty yeast that lingers. A little boozy for the abv, but this is just an observation, not a complaint. On the thicker side of medium-bodied, with a smooth, silky mouthfeel that contrasts nicely with the prickly carbonation.
Final Grade: 4.53, an A. Rochefort 6 is one of the most satisfying dubbels I have ever had the pleasure of quaffing. Honestly, if you like Belgian beers, you would be doing yourself a disservice by avoiding this - and I'll just leave it at that. A must try.
