Back to Belgium for another one! Folks, this might be one of the top 5 beers in the world. I will say it is. This bottle is just gorgeous. It is plain, yet so very elegant. I love the old-style lettering. Just a beautiful label. Opened with a nice "pop" and more smoke than I can remember when opening a beer. Temperature right around that 55 degree F mark. Did a moderately strong pour. It was almost like pouring out a coke. The head was bubbly and "spritzy", tan in color, with an abundance of carbonation. Color is on the dark side, reddish-dark brown and a bit hazy. It looks fantastic in the glass. Initial aroma presented a special richness, mostly dark fruits, prune, hints of toffee, dark truffle and maybe a little caramel. Intense and wonderful. The first taste, wow. This is something very, very special. My goodness. It is so well balanced, so smooth in the mouth, with a bit of heat from the alcohol as is slides down your throat. You feel the heat all the way down to your belly, and you get a nice warm fuzzy going on. My goodness, this is one fabulous ale. It even numbs your tongue a bit. Those dark fruits are pronounced with an uncanny sweetness to this. Some brown sugar, and the 11.2% ABV is so well hidden in the taste. You feel it more than you taste it. I pick up some grape, like a red wine in there. For a dark ale, you'd expect maybe some malty flavor or smokiness, but there isn't any to be found. This is a glorious ale my friends. Wow Wee. Getting some toffee in this next mouthful. It is exceptionally rich, complex, well balanced and much sweeter than I thought it would be. Just a fantastic world-class ale. Don't let the price shy you away. It is a must to try. For me, if I had to choose one beer to drink for the rest of my life, this would be that beer. Hands down. Go get ya one now! You must experience this!!

I've started drnking beer after a lifetime with other drinks, mostly wine, including the Master Sommelier and Master of Wine programs. Maybe that clouds my judgement. Compared to other quads, this was much more volatile and savoury in nature. The volatility drove the aromatc profile. After quads that were more like liquid banana bread and very malty, this did stand out, and in a good way. But, it also stood out because of the overt alcohol on nose and palate. It seemed a little too unbalanced despite its uniqueness. Maybe I had it too warm, but an unblanaced beer is just an unblanaced beer at the end of the day.

11.2 oz bottle exp date 12/12/27 into a chalice.
L: SRM 19 Pours murky bottle brown with a fizzy off white head that almost instantly goes to thin edge foam, lots of fine sediment in suspension, light steady carbonation, no lacing.
S: Caramel malts, over ripe plum, prunes, raisins, wine tannins, brown sugar, a hint of chocolate, brown bread notes.
T: Sweet malts & dark fruits mingle following aroma, a slight note of confectionery sugar, earthiness, light citrus zest in the lingering aftertaste. There's a slight hint of booze with warming and it is fairly full-flavored. There is background milk chocolate and a distant woody tone.
F: Fizzy & bright medium-bodied with a wet center and a medium length fairly drying (over time) finish. It is warming in the chest. Has a cathedralesque lofty palate.
O: A top shelf Trappist beer. Brisk, fruity & fairly sweet but not cloying. It's a sipping beer. Taste & feel are magic. Take your sweet time to enjoy this quadruple. It is world-class in its style.

Nose has brown sugar and raisins along with some banana

Taste is fruit bread, a bit of brown suggar and dark malt and a touch of banana

Feel is slightly less than full bodied and with a nice dry almost tea like tannic finish

Overall just great, more thoughts to come wiht the next trial of this great beer.
