I lived on Elgin Street for years when I was younger and walked past Johnny Farina's hundreds of times without going in. From the sidewalk it looked like a smaller but slightly upscale pizza place and that never really appealed to me. Recently though I had heard that they had some decent beer on tap so I went to check it out.

I was astonished. It's nothing like I had expected - first of all it's much bigger. It is deep, has multiple wings and it has an upstairs! What the hell? The decor is upscale but casual at the same time and it was packed. I cautiously walked towards the bar and asked the bartender what was on tap. He described in detail a half dozen beer and I was surprised to find that none of them were the macros and generic imports that plague the rest of the city. I settled on a pint of Delerium Tremens, served in it's own glass. It was delicious. The bar tender could tell I was interested in beer and fed me samples of three other beers to try without even asking. A glass of water was provided to help cleans my palate between them and we chatted away about beer while I waited for a reservation at a restaurant down the street.

The experience was good enough that I contacted my dinner party and had them cancel our existing reservations and we ate at Johnny Farina instead. The menu included pizza but this is not a pizza place; pasta, seafood, steaks and more were available. Our supper was excellent and the beers, all in their proper glasses and very fresh were even better. Service was top notch.

The four of us, all Ottawa residents for a decade and all of which had spent our twenties on Elgin street, were shocked that such a place existed right under our noses for that long and none of us had ever tried it. If you haven't been, give it a shot - especially if you live in Ottawa and haven't before!
