The beer pours out in a near black, dark brown color.

The aroma has some gentle roast, chocolate, pepper, spice.

The flavor is very much like a porter, but then there’s also that spicey flavor that uplifts it a bit. It has a good amount of chocolate and roast like a porter. It’s interesting with that uplifting Belgian characteristic, but it’s subtle.

Without knowing, it may just be another porter for some. This didn’t really pop out to be, but was still a well made porter.

poured off the tap into my growler looking like yoo-hoo...let it settle for about 48 hours, about 1/8th of the growler was taken up by a giant light brown sediment. Pours into my glass a deep brown with a red tint when held up to the light with a 2 finger brownish head. Smells like a roasty saison. Taste is brilliant...huge amounts of belgian candi sugar upfront and roasty chocolate, ends with a almost dry yeast flavor..very belgian tasting. Mouthfeel is on the lighter side with pretty soft carbonation. Overall completely different from the regular black duck porter but very good in its own right.

On-tap at Coopers Craft & Kitchen Bar, New York, NY

A: The beer is very dark brownish amber in color—close to near black. It poured with a thin yet dense beige head that has very good retention properties and consistently left a thin head covering the surface.
S: There are light aromas of roasted malts in the nose; these become stronger as the beer warms up.
T: The taste has seemingly intense flavors of roasted malts akin to a rauchbier or a smoked beer. There are also some notes of peppery spices towards the finish.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: I found this beer to be very unique since it is a porter made with French Saison yeast. The body is rather light making it easy to drink and also intensifying the flavors. I would definitely try this beer again.

swung by the brewery after a day at the vineyards to sample the local offerings. got about a half if a pint sample. brew was a deep dark brown with a thin head. big robust roastines on a really saison base. very nice surprise. good sweetness and a winner. haven't had many good black saisobs but this was impressive.

I found this beer to be very similar to GH’s Havre Rouge; the yeast esters and Belgian candi sugar flavors are very close, with the Canard Noir having the added roastiness of the darker malts. Color is near black, with a small off-white head, fair retention; patchy lace.

Nose is sweet with those candi sugars, lots of the yeast and accompanying spices, black pepper, roasted, slightly charred malt. Flavor is pretty much the same; I didn’t love the combination of the charred note with the saison yeast particularly, seemed a bit incongruous. Again, plenty of spice and sugar, black pepper, fruitiness, just a little bitterness in the swallow.

Medium to light bodied, medium-high carbonation, lingering sweetness in the mouth. Decent mouthfeel. Overall I wanted to like this one a little more than I actually did, something about the various flavors didn’t seem all that well-married. Not bad, but not entirely convincing either.

Note: the brewery's chalkboard called this a "Black Saison," not a porter, and the ABV was listed at 5%, not the 6.20% here or the 4.7% shown on its website.

From my notes, served on 9/15 at the Blind Tiger.

Pours a near black color with a large bubble tan head that settles into almost nothingness.

The aroma is of a mild roast. There is a light tin scent and a general musty fruity yeast note. A more white wine aroma than what I had off of the traditional tap..

Solid porter base with nice roasted notes. A hint of char and a good amount of roasted bitterness. There is a rust flavor going on as well. There is a big white wine presence off of the cask. It is quite unique for the style and is interesting how much this comes out on cask vs tap.

Typical cask feel; flat and limp but has a good balance on the palate.

Seems to be a slightly different beer off of the cask. The secondary flavors come up much more and there is a good contrast of flavor profiles.

Poured into a snifter.

A - Dark brown with a slight foam. No lacing, and no visible carbonation.

S - Has a bit of a boozy scent, with notes of dark fruit and wheat.

T - Flavors range from a sweetness of raisins, to an acidic bite, and ends with a little hint of smoke. Not bad, though it seems a bit unbalanced.

M - Hits bit heavier than it should. Medium bodied, and a noticeable bite at the end.

O - A funky kind of porter that is intriguing though maybe a bit too much out of the box.

A - beautiful dark and opaque. Like fresh soy sauce. Head is a toffy beige. Bubbles large. Clairity high

S - smokey sweet. Milk chocolate and molasses. Wheat and pumpernickel.

T - best so far. Sweet almost citrus initial tastes that blend to a cinnamon honey middle and a toast finish

M - smooth mouth watering and silky. Nice.

D - a winner. Good all around

Note: This was the one I ordered a growler of after sampling 5/6 beers.

On draft at Sapsuckers, Huntington, NY.

Poured a deep brown hue with a one finger foamy off white head. There was good retention and sticky lacing.

The smell featured a roasted malts, some pepper and a strangely placed ester.

The taste was a bit of a mish mash of flavors with the roasted malts, Belgian yeast strain and peppery hop all fighting for position. A bit of a free for all flavor wise.

The mouthfeel was typical of the style with a lingering spiciness.

Overall an interesting and certainly ambitious porter. A bit muddled however.

Appearance: The liquide noir is topped by an inch or so of tan foam that leaves some streaks behind

Smell: Contrasting elements of roast, black bread, spicy yeast phenols, chocolate and citrus

Taste: Opens with the roast and black bread flavors that are quickly followed up by the spicy Belgian yeast character from the Saison yeast; an earthy bitterness arrives by mid-palate along with the chocolate; the Belgian yeast character continues to build in the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: A very interesting beer but there are a lot of contrasting elements going on; fascinating but I think I would likely prefer the base porter or the base Saison better on their own than in combination

On tap at TJ Finleys for their Greenport "Kick the Keg" event for the first annual Long Island Craft Beer Week. Served in a pint glass.

Look: black body with a thin, creamy, mocha colored head. It leaves a little lacing as I drink it but the lacing disappears fairly quickly. Good head retention as well. Good looking beer.

Smell: roasted malt aromas, reminiscent of their Black Duck porter, but with a bit of Belgian yeastiness and ester profile mixed in. The aromas already seem to be clashing to me...

Taste: and, I'm sad to say, the problem in the nose continues into the taste. Spicy, ester flavors better suited for a saison clash with roasted, coffee like tastes from the malt. It doesn't really do it for me. Not impressed.

Feel: generally good, medium bodied, good carbonation, etc. However, its a little more attenuated than I would like in a porter and its a bit too dry for me. Its also not quite that sessionable.

Overall: fairly disappointing. As someone who really, really likes Black Duck Porter, I was hoping this spin off would be good. Unfortunately, the Belgian yeast takes away much more than it adds. This is something that I would avoid if I saw it again. Cheers.
