A 500ml bottle with a BB of Oct 2014, so it's a bit out of date. I'm hoping it has held up over time. Picked up a good while back from the York Beer & Wine shop.
A: Poured into a Duvel tulip. Bottle conditioned. A very dark brown hue that appears ultra-black in the glass. Yields a small head of frothy light-brown foam that lingers for a moment before collapsing to a patchy surface layer.
S: Aroma of sweet, fruity malt with hints of prunes, dried fruit, molasses, mild roasted grain, vague fruitcake, a touch of vanilla, earthy yeast and faint mustiness. Rich, verging on cloying. The malt is more subdued than expected.
T: Tastes of sweet, fruity malt with a lingering finish. Notes of prunes, dried fruit, dark malt, mild roasted grain, molasses, earthy yeast, a hint of vanilla and faint stewed leaves. A whisper of sherry in the background. Quite sweet, followed by a subdued, malty bitterness upon swallowing.
M: Mouthfeel is smooth and thick, with very soft carbonation and a lovely, unctuous body. Could do with being a touch livelier. Pretty astringent, accompanied by an aftertaste of fruity malt, molasses, roasty bitterness and earthy yeast.
O: A decent RIS, though not as imposing as I had anticipated. Perhaps I held on to this bottle a bit too long. Looks OK, while the aroma and flavour are rich and fruity with hints of molasses, dried fruit and subtle roasted malt. Decent body; could be a shade more carbonated. A good stab at the style but not world-class. That said, worth trying if you come across it.

Traded from Ben in York (thanks!!).
Pours deep dark oily black. Strong scents of "dark" and "strong" during the pour -- anise first, then malt and molasses. This one is bottle-conditioned, so the yeast could be adding some interesting notes. Scent seems to dissipate quickly. There is very little head, and what there is, goes fast. As it warms the scent comes back. Wood, anise, malt, alcohol.
The bottle says "best before October 15, 2014. We drank it in November 2012.
Taste is dry -- dryer than it smells. Sharp up front with a smoky finish. Maybe a touch of dried fruit (but not very sweet) in the middle. Might even say it's harshly smoky. Further sips reveal smoke and more smoke.
I am used to Russian imperials that are richer, rounder, and sweeter than this one. This one is dry -- might pair well with a hearty meal. But I think there's less complexity in this stout than in some others.
My co-taster Andrea would buy again, but probably not me.
