And the heavens opened up. That Westmalle yeast. That bright, eye-opening flavor. Big decadent foamy head. Aromatics all over the place. This beer downright sparkles on the tongue. Those marvelous, characteristic esters.

Yep. Dangerously drinkable.

I bought a case of this and have been drinking a couple of bottles a year. Its best to drink it within the first couple of years after bottling. On the more youthful bottles the nose is light fruit in various stages of ripeness mostly peach like but it becomes more like pineapple with traces of banana and then sherry as it ages. It pours straw gold with a slight haze under a 1” finely bubbled, rocky white foam cap. It has a fruit palate with peach and traces of bubble gum suspended in an outrageous texture halfway between liquid and foam that finishes with an assertive bitterness. The bitterness fades as it ages.

Appearance: Light straw yellow and kind of hazy with some floating yeast throughout. Light white head lingers with film like layer over the top of the beer.

Aroma: Banana yeasty esters, some stone fruit aromas, a little bit of apricot nectar and slight bit of something else that I cannot exactly narrow down. Pretty standard aroma for Belgian Tripels.

Taste: Yeasty and ester forward notes, bananas and some other notes in there, a little bit overly sweet and the finish is not as clean as I would expect from a Trappist beer. Good but I have had others in the style that are better.

Overall: Its been a while since I have had a Tripel and since this is one of the higher rated ones I thought I would give it a go, but I have had better. It think this one is a little more bitter and a little more lingering on the tongue than I would prefer of the style overall not a bad beer at all, very worthwhile to seek out, but not one I would go after all the time.

11.2 oz Brown bottle $5.95 State Street
Appearance: Hazy amber honey color
Very tall head sticks around a while
Bubbles coming from glass like champagne, but not strong
Smell: Beery, sweet fruit, a little yeasty
Flavor: foamy, coats the tongue, long lasting bitter aftertaste
Too much bitter for me, like grapefruit pith
Overall: 2/5 Not to my liking at all. It tastes like what I expect a beer to taste like, which is why
I don't like beer. Bitter and sort of bland.

Incredible tripel of 9.5% ABV, of an opaque ocher color and a big and persistant whitey foam.
Smell and taste are characterized by delicious and unexpected sweet tones; they're also full of grainy tones and it's easy to feel the yeast.
Body, carbonation and bitterness are at perfect level, I believe this beer has the best feel of all I've tasted.

750ml bottle poured into a shaker pint. Yellow-orange and hazy the beer is topped by a three finger rocky white head that settles to an uneven finger high foam. Lots of lacing. Aroma is spicy, green apple, young grapes, citrus, grass, and bread. Flavor is fruity yeast and spicy bitterness. Some grape juice sweetness, citrus zest, and alcohol which comes on the swallow. A solid medium-plus body that’s lightened up by active carbonation, creamy texture, on the semi-sweet side of dry on the finish.

look: 3.75 | smell: 4 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 3.75

Look - Pours a hazy yellow with orange/brown tint. Lots of sediment. Thick head with great retention and good lacing.

Smell - Citrusy all the way through

Taste - Citrus flavor is not as pronounced as the smell. Hints of caramel. However there is a nasty bite of some off flavor, tastes old.

Feel - Smooth, slightly chalky, slightly chewy, and a bit savory at the finish. Great masking of the ABV too. Very quaffable.

Overall - The flavor didn't really do it for me. I am thinking that I possibly got an old beer or that it wasn't shipped/stored properly since the best by date was 6/8/15. The beer was also very highly carbonated, as it started to foam over the bottle's lip upon opening (I have heard this can be a symptom of a bad beer).

A: Pours a hazy dark gold color with a very active three finger head of big bubbles that soon disappear.

S: The nose is somewhat weak, but that of fresh citrus fruit and cloves.

T: A very appealing mix of citrus, banana (which seems to be a reoccurring theme today), sweet honey, and hops. The 9.5%ABV is surprisingly almost nonexistent, save for a slight warming on the finish.

F: This one feels a bit lighter but still features enough body to satisfy, along with pretty active carbonation.

O: Delicious. A beautifully crafted balance of sweet and bitter. I'm truly enjoying this glass right now, and it's getting even better as it warms up just a touch. I'll be back to this one again for sure.

Best tripel i have had. Beautiful looking, the ripe pear aroma is just perfect and the taste so complex i won´t even begin to try to describe it. World class indeed.

2/3 - Monk's Pub (Downtown Chicago). I enjoyed this bottled beer, but I typically prefer draft beer. The look and smell were somewhat neutral. I like the taste, not as heavy or strong as I expected, but a pleasant beer to drink. I like this beer and would like to find a draft version at some point down the road.

I've had this beer probably 3-5 times before. I never quite liked it until this sample today. I think I was getting skunked or old bottles in the past. Maybe the yeast was stirred up a bit? They all had this flavor I didn't quite like, a staleness which was a turn off. I couldn't quite understand why people kept calling this tripel one of the best. Today I had a bottle which was fantastic. This is what a tripel should be. Estery and dry, peppery aftertaste. The color is pale gold, nice white head with good retention. Improves as it warms. Not a fan of the initial smell but this too improves as the beer sits for a few minutes. Overall I loved this bottle, now I know what all the hype was about!

Tasted:Jan. 14, 2014
Purchased: Dec. 19 2014 11.2 oz. bottle
Served cold from the fridge.
Look: Poured cloudy lemon yellow. Formed two fingered creamy white head that lasted but a minute or so.
Smell: Citrus and melon in the nose. Nose continues to open up with warming and greets you with every return trip to the glass.
Taste: First taste in the mouth is a mix of complex lemony citrus, fruity melon in a yeasty beer deliciousness. This gives way to a bitter hoppy bite that pleasantly lingers and pairs well with the fruity tastes.
Feel: Light in the mouth but not watery. Nice level of carbonation lasted well until the end. Very refreshing.
Overall: I generally don’t care for bitter beers but this is proving an exception. A lot going on here. I was very pleased and pleasantly surprised at how well I took to this brew. Tad expensive but I will certainly buy again.

Light golden honey color with tints of orange. Big white head. Apricots and banana on the nose with hints of pepper. Peppery taste upfront with noticeable alcohol, then honey and banana, a hint of citrus and, yes, pineapple. Some hop bitterness in the aftertaste. Good stuff overall, but not as close to perfection as their dubbel.

11.2oz into simple tulip glass. The color was the deep golden, hazy liquid all previous reviews have described. A pillowy white head that quickly dissipated to a half-finger, then held from there. Not much lacing on glass - could be my fault.
The aroma was subtle blend of spice, dried fruit, citrus, and of course a nice touch of banana. Did have to get the nose in there to get details. Wife noticed some cinnamon and coriander. Wish I had that level of olfactory articulation.
The flavor is why we buy this beauty. The quintessential Tripel. The spice notes up front, the light citrus and dried fruit across the palate and the dry, yeasty finish (I made a full pour) - the definition of Tripel.
When I someday get a beer fridge, this will be a regular inclusion.

330ml bottle poured into a Vedett tulip glass - best before August 2016

Look: Pours a clear, golden yellow with a diffuse white head and some lacing. Although it doesn't have the clarity of a krystalweizen I didn't see the haziness that some other reviewers have noted - maybe my pour left most of the yeast in the bottle.

Smell: A bit disappointing in that it's barely there. Seriously, even serving at the 'correct' temperature I was getting faint whiffs of banana with a hint of alcohol. Not much in the way of yeast and the spice notes were also in the 'barely there' category. It certainly lacked the aromatic onslaught of other tripels I've had.

Taste: Aah, *that's* more like it - packed full of citrus with malt and yeast notes and a hint of pepperiness. Slightly flowery/grassy flavours to finish. Suitably complex.

Feel: A mouthful of this and it doesn't feel like something with 9.5% ABV - slightly, tingly carbonation but otherwise quite a light and dry feel.

Overall: It's from Belgium and it's a tripel, so it was pretty much a given that I'd like this, and I do. For something that nearly hits double figures ABV-wise it's extremely drinkable without tasting like paint stripper. I've got another bottle in the 'cellar' so it'll be interesting to see how aging treats it.

Not as sweet or fruity as Americans' perhaps first tripel love, Le Fin du Monde.

As a matter of fact, it's quite well-balanced for how boozy it is- betraying this only in the nose.

Bottled 05/16/2011. Poured a hazy yellowish-orange color, with a half inch head that slowly dissipated to a thin film that laced nicely. Aroma was a bit subdued, with some pepper, banana, clove, and funky yeasty notes. The flavor was outstanding, with some citrus, flowery, grassy, and bready notes coming through. The mouthfeel was light, somewhat dry, with a great finish. Perfect carbonation sets off the mouthfeel nicely. This is an outstanding beer, the time in the cellar really melded all the complex flavors perfectly.

750ml bottle.

Yellow with a white creamy head.

Nose is ok but not the beers strength.

Banana with some mild hop bitterness in the flavor.

Creamy on the palate.

Overall an excellent, classic example of the style.

Pours a beautiful three fingered head on top of a mildly hazy, golden straw body into a Spiegelau tulip glass. Tastes of glorious amounts of yeast and what seem like ever changing light fruit flavors, with the delightful mouth-puffing carbonation that is typical of the finest Belgian ale. Finishes with a mild astringency. This is without a doubt one of the world's finest.

Pours clear yellow with a hint of an orange hue. Tons of head that makes a gorgeous cap and bubbles pouring upwards. Peppery nose with hints of booze and bananas. Body is very light for such a high ABV. Pepper, pears, banana, grass & hay. Clean finish my that warms slightly. Great beer.

A: (3/3) Golden with light haze and very thick creamy head that sticks around for a while
S: (11/12) Delightfully banana-clovey with some pepper and alcohol to balance it out
T: (18/20) Solid banana and sweet malt flavor with incredibly clean finish
M: (5/5) Very bubbly and solid dryness on finish
O: (8/10) Wow. Refreshing and sweet? I didn’t think it was possible. This is a solid beer, and one I’ll keep looking for in the future. It’s such a treat when a beer like this is generally easy to find, but so delicious. The more I drink it, though, the alcohol just wallops me over the head.

Purchased from on base Camp Hansen, Okinawa Shoppette...

A - Pours a golden haze, two fingers of creamy white head which laces nicely

S - Sweet and spicy on the nose with strong belgian yeast a really true sampling of the flavor profile

F - The flavor is a sweet bready nectar showing off honey , almonds, hazlenuts and other malt forward notes

M - Creamy and full bodied, warming and sticky

Overall a really great Tripel, the best I've had in a while... recommend highly.
