L: Pale honey, apricot, good finger head, dissipates slowly

Pours a hazy golden color, with a rather substantive white head. A lot of visible carbonation as well. This is a cool looking beer.

Smells of Belgian yeast, alongside citrus, exotic fruit, some honey, caramel, and clove. The nose manages to be both complex and straight-forward at the same time.

The taste is surprisingly malty in comparison to the nose, meaning that malt is undoubtedly present. The sweetness from the fruit, honey, and caramel is still very much present however. Mouthfeel is as expected intimidatingly light, and this drinks outrageously easy what supposedly is 9.5%.

This is definitely up there among the best tripels I've had. Those Belgian monks know what they are up to.

L-The beer pours a pale yellow until I botch the decanting as usual. The head is significant. it is foamy white and about 2 fingers in height. Lacing is moderate and lasting.
S- The nose is sweet with honey and candied fruit. I wanna say peach, but that isn't quite right. Nectarine maybe. Alcohol finishes the nose only after the sweetness has played itself out.
T-The initial sips were a little on the rough side. This bottle is getting older and I can't vouch for the storage. Alcohol is more than present. Bottom line is I'm drinking this too cold. After warming some the beer smoothes out nicely and mimics what I expected from the nose. The honey and fruits up front with some candy sweetness which is cut some by the warming alcohol at the finish.
F- The beer is highly carbonated. The prickliness of the carbonation helps smooth the transition of sweetness to the alcohol in the finish. Medium overall mouthfeel despite the high carb levels.
O- Obviously the beer is a really good example of the Tripel style. You know since they are one of the originators. Still I find this one a little strong on the alcohol presence for my personal tastes. I might enjoy this one more if it were on the younger side.

Westmalle Trappist Tripel Ale is simply delicious. I drank it from a Westvleteren Goblet, which I know isn't right.

(L) It has a murky golden hue color with a thin white head.

(A) It has modest aroma of caramel, yeast, and lemon.

(T) It has a really nice balance of flavors, grain, bread, yeast, honey and apple, perjaps some peach, and the alcohol is almost not detectable.

(F) Juicy, a little dry, very easy drinking.

L: Pours a mildly hazy dark hay color with very lively carbonation, including bubbles streaming up from all sides, a nicely sized head and superior head retention and lacing.

S: Lots of ripe apple skins, onions (DMTS) and some dry cardboard, and lemon zest. Not a ton going on here, either in intensity or complexity, and comes across as a bit oxidized.

T: Sweet mealy red apples with some spicy floral hops, lots of Belgian yeast spice and a decent amount of sweet bready malt. The flavor seems mildly oxidized, following the aroma. Finishes semi-dry, with a good deal of apple and banana-like phenols, some grassy hops and touch of caramel.

F: Medium-plus bodied with prickly medium-level carbonation. Slightly creamy mouthfeel, mostly devoid of alcoholic heat save some mild warmth late in the finish.

Thoughts: Not as great as I remember it. Comes across a bit oxidized, which it shouldn't with only about a year on the bottle, and none of the flavors are particularly distinct or really shine. I have several more bottles so if I get a more positive impression with either of them I'll revisit this review.

Pours a deep straw golden yellow with a slight hint of an orange hue and a very frothy two finger head of pillowy white foam that leaves gentle lacing.

Subtle but noticeable caramel/toffee sweetness, citrus, lemongrass, yeasty spiciness, clove.

The citrusy aroma while subtle is lost in the flavor and dominated by fresh grain, toffee, bread, toast, clove, more yeasty spice, and some more caramelly sweetness.

Medium-bodied, high carbonation, soft, sweet, smooth, dry finish.

Overall, truly another world class Trappist brew. Well deserving of it's high status and being readily available is even sweeter.

I must start with a disclaimer that neither Belgian ales, nor triples of any kind are my favorite styles of beer. That said, a good friend was gracious enough to bring me several back from a trip to try.

Poured a cloudy golden straw with a thick fuzzy head that dissipated quickly to a thin but lingering one. The scent is sweet, and dominated by cloves. At first sip it is quickly apparent there is much more going on however. While clove persists, it is joined by subtle hints of banana and gingerbread. I detect some booziness, but it is cut quickly by a late lingering bitterness. Not as heavy as some triples I've tried. While not my style, it is obviously a well crafted beer and worthy of anyone's time to give it a try.

Poured to a Leffe chalice.

A: The body is crystalline, with yellow to orange hues. The body looks very well but it looses to the head, which firstly appeared as a two finger white head but after few seconds presented itself as a small head with no retention and with no lacing. But after all, it's a tripel. It shouldn't have a coehesive head.
S: The aroma is yeasty and has fantastic notes of citrus mixed with a bit of alcohol.
T: The taste goes exactly according to the aroma, having a fantastic taste of belgian yeast, citrus and a bit of alcohol. Awesome.
M: The beer has a great medium to high body that has low levels of bitterness.
O: I've had a couple tripels in the past but Westmalle's appears to be one of the most solid.

Tasty. Smooth. Not bitter but with a hint of bitterness on the aftertaste. Heavy like you'd expect from a triple. Great smell and flavor. Good mouth feel.

This is a favorite of many, among whom I am glad to be included.

Reviewed at length in Roger Protz' CAMRA classic "300 Beers To Try Before You Die!"
This Tripel is listed in the "1001" and most assuredly deserves that.

MJ's Great Beers of Belgium" gives one of his longest reviews to Westmalle, so it is a treat for everyone to read. His descriptions of Brother Thomas are lovingly funny. (It is a great testament to the universal transcendence of brewing that someone of Jewish heritage born in Yorkshire can have such a great relationship with a Trappist monk.)
MJ's 1999 Guide gives this 4 of 4 stars (a rarity, less than 2% earn this... is my guess.) After an unusually lengthy description of the ingredients and process, he concludes "the Trpel expresses very full character waiting six months

From bottle, pours a hazy amber with a white soapy head and laced quite good. Aroma peach, banana, clove, sweet, spices. Taste fruityness, clove, spices. Very nice.

Head stays up, always a good sign. Beautiful colour.

Peachy, apricotty aroma.

Fruity taste. Elements of Duvel happening. But much more bitter, rougher, less smooth.

I like the feel, thick and creamy and the right amount of acidity.

The taste is highly complex. Every sip is different.

This is much better than the Dubbel. Though it does not have enough fruitiness or sweetness to complement the bitterness, to make it truly amazing. Mixing this with Duvel in the same glass would correct it..! Will try at some point in future.

Overall, very good, though not the best...it does not give pleasure like Chimay Bleu or a Guinness does.

Pours - cloud orange yellow color with thick white head that lasts forever, excellent lacing.

Smell - The smell bursts with sweet banana notes a little bit of clove there are also some other sweet fruit smells I cant quite put my finger on maybe apple or pear.

Taste - The first thing I notice is a sweet bread taste a little but of honey and spice. The alcohol is present but not overwhelming.

Feel - Very good carbonation, slightly dry little bite from the alcohol.

Overall - An excellent beer at a very good price.

Pours a pale gold with big poofy head that leaves lacing and a ring that's lasts the entire glass. Nose is...well this s how a triple should smell. Plenty of esters, a bit of spiciness, and just a hair nt of booze. Flavor was solid, but not as great as the nose. Honestly, l'd like it a bit drier. Mouthfeel was full yet light due to ample carbonation. A classic.

The aroma is of funk, sweetness and a slight spice. The taste follows with sweetness and spice in the front but with a nice balance of funk/barnyard. But the real highlight is the mouthfeel: Though the carbonation might seem a bit high, it is smooth with medium fine bubbles that complement the aroma and taste very nicely. And the body is just right for this style. Overall, a real winner!

Poured from an 11.2 oz bottle into a wine glass. Beautiful to look at, prodigious head with staying power that I could easily bring back with a few swirls of the glass. Well saturated golden color. This beer laced all the way down the side of the glass with aplomb. The yeast esters were readily apparent in this beer, it had some of that banana you'd be looking for in a tripel. In addition to that I got some lemon notes, more lemon pulp than peel. Spicing was more coriander than clove, also got some nutmeg in there. Finished pretty dry despite the sugars, more dry than the St. Bernardus Tripel I had alongside this one. There was a funky quality to the Westmalle that I wasn't expecting, but it did make for a really interesting drinking experience. I hesitate to say it was earthy, but it was a definite (non-Brett) funk that I don't recall having in other more straightforward tripels where belgian yeast byproducts and candied sugar is the predominant flavor profile. This was a wonderful beer that I'd happily have again. Preferably if someone else buys a bottle for me, it's not cheap.

Pours a cloudy golden color with a two finger white head and excellent lacing. Citrus aromas first, followed by hops and spices-mostly pepper. Taste is lightly citrusy and floral with honey notes. Delicious malt and pepper flavors. Well carbonated with a light feel. A classic.

11.2 oz bottle, best before 27/01/2017. Poured into a tulip glass.
Look: Very effervescent, three fingers of tight bright white head, a bright yellow-orange in color, slightly hazy and some sticky white lacing that follows.
Smell: Lovely tart lemons and citrus, floral like sweet pear and white grapes/wine, reminiscent of a nice chardonnay.
Taste: White wine, lemony bitterness, a little spicy with some mild honey sweetness and clove that balances with the bready malt and subtle yeasty floral funk.
Feel: Dry and a little boozy, while still smooth and velvety. The big fluffy head and bubbles aren’t representative of the frothy medium carbonation present while you drink.
Overall: A very tasty tripel that reminds me so much of a cool refreshing chardonnay on a hot summer day. My second trappist ale that sure did not disappoint.

Delicious Belgian ale! Lots of head on first pour. Plenty of sediment towards the end if you don't pour carefully (which I didn't). Great aroma. Sharp citrus flavor, but not too overwhelming. Excellent carbonation. My wife absolutely hated it.

I don't remember enjoying a Belgian beer this much in a long time - possibly since the last time I was in Belgium, over 10 years ago.

First off, let me say that I'm not really a fan of Tripels. Even though this beer is amazingly smooth, it just reminds me too much of champagne. It's barely a beer honestly. At 9.5% abv it's a hard hitter but the taste just isn't there. Again, maybe I'm just biased to the style but overall I'm just not impressed with it.

The Westmalle Trappist is also known as "The mother of all Tripels"! Just for that, since beforehand I knew I was going to make a major purchase when I saw this lady for sale. It's a real work of art! It is produced by Brouwerij van der Trappisten Westmalle (Westmalle, Belgium), with the same recipe since 1956 (although it was brewed for the first time in 1934). The aroma is fruity and lightly hopped. The taste is slightly bitter and fruity, with 9.5% alcohol are well perceived in the mouth. The finish is long.
Serve a goblet, between 8 and 14 degrees (room temperature). It is ideal to accompany dishes with red meats and strong cheeses.

Quite a bright colored pour with a decent head that did dissipate quickly but not fully. Scents of pear, apricots, and sweet tea. Interestingly, has many spice particles in the body. This may need some aging because it is quite boozy. Very smooth otherwise and not sweet, almost dry. Medium bodied.
Decent but not worth the cash. I'd go for Chimay, Rochfort, or Unibroue over this one.

Best Before 03/23/17: Pours cloudy gold color that leans towards orange with active bubbles racing up the middle to a fluffy and thick foamy bright white 2 finger head that was full of bubbles of all sizes which dissipated very slowly, leaving great foamy lacing.

Smells of sweet malt, yeast, toasted grains, caramel, wheat, lemon zest, mild booze, apple skin and other green fruits, light funk, mild honey, floral hops and soft spices including white pepper, coriander and very faint cinnamon or cumin. The malt is dominant but very sweet, inviting and soft as the spices and hops in the mix make it very complex and really enjoyable to inhale. The 9.5% ABV is extremely well hidden in the nose.

Tastes sweet and bready up front, with basically the same lineup as the nose: toasted grains, timid caramel, sweet malt, wheat, chalky yeast, lemon zest, pear, apple skin and other fruits, light funk, candied sugar, grass, honey, floral hops, brown sugar and spices including white pepper, coriander, allspice, cinnamon or cumin. There is some warming of the belly from the alcohol, but it is very well hidden inside the sweetness of the malt complexities. This is a classic in all regards as it's one of the core beers that sets the standard for what fermented malt should taste like. The brothers sure knew how to cook a tasty brew.

Mouthfeel is incredibly smooth and buttery slick, like liquid velvet. It has a medium chewy body and weight, mild to almost non-existent carbonation and a finish that is sweet with mild funk, light bitterness and a sweet malty to bready finish. A meal in a bottle that hides the booze and flows down effortlessly.

I haven't had this beer in a few years and I remember it being very tasty, but this solidified it as excellent.

Slightly cloudy straw colored pour with thin, but lasting white foam top. I bought two bottles, so hoping the other is different. Lots of pepper dominates the aroma. in there somewhere is some banana and bubblegum, but pepper and/or clove overwhelms. Flavor is unfortunately very similar. Hard to discern the subleties, but there is some malt sweetness. Finishes with a bite from the pepper.
