Note: i review beers to keep track of what i've tried, to expand my vocabulary and train my palate... not for points. however, i admit i am a little excited to earn my mug, just as most BAs must be. I'm not positive, but i think this review will bump me up a notch to the next level of beerdom. so i decided to get one i've been looking forward to but putting off for a while. LOVED the trappist tripel, so i'm pretty sure the dubbel won't disappoint. one little catch, the particular bottle i got has a best by date of last month. i got a discount on the beer, i don't think the freshness will affect it too much, hope not anyway.
pours out of the attractive bottle into the tulip, a very nice appearance that puts a smile on my face. solid, dark brown color with hints of maroon, about the same as the bottle and label. dense, fat beige head, nice retention and lacing. the smell is awesome. i did a double take. it's been a little while since i had a trappist, other than chimay. my first thought is bubble gum. it's a great big, obviously fruity, malt bomb. reminds me of rochefort 10, (which i've only had one bottle of, but made such an impression on me that i clearly remember it months later). it's a very sweet smell, but one of great character and complexity that makes me very thirsty.
the taste, like the smell is near perfection. i can't believe i didn't take advantage of the store and get more bottles for even more of a discount, which i probably could have done if i was persistent. this superb dubbel has a glorious velvety mouthfeel, a full-body taste, a crisp and just-bitter-enough finish. it has everything, and at an abv of 7% it isn't as toxic as most quadrupels, which to me makes it more drinkable. i could have a few of these.
i have come a long way since my first review of a dubbel, which is embarrasing but i keep it as a reminder. this is a great style of beer that was a bit of an aquired taste for me.
