A- Much darker than I would expect for a dubbel, and foamed over when I opened it :(. I won't hold that against this beer. It is a dark tan color with an off white head that diminishes to a film.

S- Caramel malt and fig dominate. Sugary sweetness and barley twang in the background, a bit of alcohol

T- Fig, caramel, and a hefty serving of malt. Dark cherries, and other dark fruits are in the background. Slight bitter taste, barely any alcohol taste. Little bit tart at the end

M- bold, but medium body. Full flavor with a drinkable feel.

D- Extremely drinkable. Full of flavor, but does not weigh you down. (613 characters)

Review from notes taken at the time of tasting.
A - Poured a deep purpleish brown with an explosive collar that soured above the lip of the tulip. There was a frothy white head with super clingy lacing.
S - Dark fruits, alcohol, more DSDA than a dubbel. Plum, grape, alc, sugar.
T - Perfectly balanced dubbel nothing too much in any direction. The alc is well hidden.
M - Smooth and even. On the money. Cooling aftertaste. If anything, maybe a bit too rich and filling?
D - Easiest dubble I've ever had. Smooth and perfect. (523 characters)

If ever there was a colure before “Let There Be Light” this is it, Westmalle Trappist Ale pours that dark. Head of light tan very fine foam goes to over two fingers before settling down to a fine cap of foam with moderate lacing. The carbonation does not rise to the top and replenish the head, it can’t, the liquid is too viscous and traps the gas within, only to be released when the ale washes over the tongue. Pretty neat trick, I would say.

Raisin and prune with just a touch of fig and allspice to the nose. Raisin and prune with just a touch of fig, and allspice to the palate as well as bittersweet dark chocolate. The 7.00% ABV is completely veiled within this delicious brew.

If I take up consuming Westmalle Trappist Ale on a regular basis, I’m going to have to get a second job… (802 characters)

Tremendous Dubbel. Westmalle has hit two homers, with Tripel and now the Dubbel. I'm embarrassed not to have tried them before this weekend. This will be one to stock in the future, without question.

Two pouring attempts into the Ommegang Tenth Anniversary glass yielded head, three fingers thick of bone-white froth, capping a cloudy, brown-berry body, and expertly lacing the glass--masterful. The smell is sweet with grape, pear and orange, with a slight pine hint after another pass. The taste is incredibly smooth, sweet with plenty of sugar, the fruits above with the addition of cherry, followed by a spicy aftertaste that I wished to get more while imbibing.

This is an absolute delight, easy to have a few of these were it not for the cost, and they're well worth cellaring despite, or because of, the drinkability. Outstanding Dubbel. Grab a few. (858 characters)

Really nice, a Duppel in a class of its own. Clear to murky brown body with a light tan head, great retention and lacing. Smell and taste are a mix of dark fermented fruits, sugars, and München style malts, boiled in corn syrup with alcohol to thin it all out.
Very complex and heavy in the mouth but with a smooth, warm finish. Some remaining tartness and hops coat the palate. Hard to describe this one...just a master of the style and worth a try. (451 characters)

Got this beer in its 11.2 ounce bottle at Gaslight Brewery and Restaurant. I had always wanted to try the westmalle trappist beers and it was a no brainer to finally try it last night. From the first sip, I was drawn by its complexities.
A- Nice brownish red color with limited head. Poured into a westmalle glass (this bar has the right glass for every beer they serve)

S- some caramel notes mixed in with nice dried fruits such as cherries and plum and a good yeast backing.

T- the smell and more. The roastyness surrounded the tantalizing fruit esters. At times their was hints of alcohol and yeast, but they did not get in the way of how great this beer is.

M- Very drinkable. This one is worth taking slow medium size sips because you'll want to enjoy it for as long as possible.

D- Awesome! Could have a couple in a sitting. (835 characters)

This is so far my favourite dubbel and for me is a benchmark for how I judge this style.

Dark, dark red, it has a huge, light-tan head that shrinks slowly and leaves some lace.

The aroma is rich, dark malt, caramel, toast, yeasty bread dough, and fruit with hints of alcohol - port, especially. It is reminiscent of English barleywine.

The taste is first sweet and malty, with spicey fruit and toast with smooth, warming alcohol - rather like amn English barleywine. It becomes more bitter with spiciness with more caramel, prunes and cherries, balancing the sweetness. Although rich and complex, it is unusually smooth and easy to drink. (644 characters)

Serving: Center-poured from 11.2 oz bottle into a large snifter glass.

This beer pours a beautiful, dark chocolate brown color with a dense, foamy tan head which has excellent retention.

Aromas of caramel/toffee and fruit are very prevalent with the initial pour. As head slowly (and I mean slowly) fades, you cannot help but to keep your nose in it, further picking up the aroma of caramel, dates, and berries with some malt, but not as much as one would expect from a Trappist.

Still sniffing all the way up until it touches the tongue, one may taste the aromas described above, but also with a proper, mild bitterness. It feels smooth as it enters the mouth onto the tongue, then gently bites you in the back as you swallow.

The drinkabilty is superb, for it gets better and better with every sip and as it gradually warms, further enhancing the flavor. "Trappist" should be its own group on the food pyramid. Despite the cost and trouble to find it in the states, I wouldn't mind having one every day. (1,010 characters)

Poured from an 11.2 oz. bottle into a pint glass. The beer poured a nice opaque amber color with a beautiful, creamy head that kept its lacing. I must have poured this a lot better than some of my fellow reviewers, because I didn't have the full head that everyone is talking about, but rather an absolutely perfect quarter inch head or so.

The smell is rather difficult to describe, but it is nonetheless pleasant. I'm not a wine expert, but it literally smelled like generic wine. I could discern some fig, wild berries, toffee, malt, chocolate, and of course, alcohol and I'm sure there is plenty of other fruit in it. The smell is tremendous and is only a sign of more good things to come.

The initial taste wasn't nearly as good as it was once it warmed. I've noted before that my refrigerator is quite cold (due to my roommates), but the flavors became quite vibrant and stately once the brew reached closer to room temperature. Absolutely delicious. The blend of fruit, spices, alcohol, and tannin made it almost taste like it smelled - like wine(!)

Mouthfeel was perhaps the weakest (if there is a weakest) part of this brew. I felt as though there was a bit too much carbonation that kept the beer from reaching its true potential until it warmed up. Once warm, however, the brew went down entirely too smooth for a beer with 7% abv.

And that leads to drinkability. Again, for a 7% abv beer, this is almost entirely too drinkable. I'm a bit upset I only bought the single because I can't wait to have another one and to let my friends try this as well. The monks are certainly doing something right, one of the better beers I've had in a long time. (1,661 characters)

poured into a pint glass. appears an opaque molasses brown, with tan head and better retention than expected. smells of clove, chocolate, dark sweet fruits and roasted malts. taste is great. not too heavy on the yeast bitterness, not too much carbonation, has chocolatey and banana flavors going on. alcohol barely noticeable. finishes sweet and medicinal, with a tingling clove taste at the end. very creamy for a dubbel, feels very full in the mouth, and again carbonation levels spot on. the drinkability on this one is through the roof. very smooth. the flavors combine extremely well and it goes down like a knife through butter. excellent trappist dubbel. (661 characters)

Glad to have revisited this beer after not having it for quite a while. Typical of all great Trappist beers. A prune-like colored hue with a yeasty murkiness, rocky foamstand, and great lacing. Seriously rich aroma. Full of fruits, candy, spices, and berries. Tastes the same as aroma, even moreso. A terrific blend of ripe-to-bruised fruits of apples, pears, dates, figs, and banannas. Candies of beet sugars, sweet malty, and a bit of a chocolate flavor. Spices up with a vineous-berry flavor, yeast, aged hops, and alcohol. Full and rich in the texture that falls short of thick. Finishes sweet, a bit tacky, and a bit dry. Worthy of the Trappist name. It's a very good beer. (678 characters)

I usually judge beer with this much hype with doubt in the back of my mind. Found it on-tap at the Zotte in Amsterdam.

Looks like a very standard strong Belgian. Deep brown with a creamy tan head.

The smell is slightly caramel, a hint of candy and the smell of, how to describe... a homebrew that has too much refined sugar added to it, resulting in extra alcohol. However, it's not a bad smell by any means.

Mouthfeel is very smooth and creamy. The taste is almost sweet, but not too sugar sweet or malty, just right. It has a slight chocolate and caramel taste, then ends with the hops making an appearance.

Overall, despite my reservations with hyped beers, I was pleasantly surprised. I actually ordered another at the end of the evening. For a Dubbel, this one ranks at the very top for me. Sets the bar very high for strong ales, without a doubt. (857 characters)

Poured from a 330 mL bottle into a Belgian tulip glass.

A: Pours a very dark, hazy amber with a generous tan head that holds very firmly. A constant stream of bubbles can be seen rushing up the side of the glass. Leaves generous lacing on the glass as you drink it down.

S: Malty sweet and fruity. A hint of raisin and dates covered in caramel. It's very subtle and delicate with a gently earthiness underlying the other scents.

T: The first sip is surprisingly bold considering the delicate aroma. A sharp twang is the first flavor the hits the palate. It's difficult to describe. It's not unpleasant in any way, just surprising. The sharpness quickly fades into a pleasant blend of malt and dark fruits. Rum raisin, figs and a gentle touch of coffee. The hop presence is understated and judiciously applied to let the malty, fruity flavors shine through.

M: This is difficult to describe. It's a touch on the dry side but has just enough body to let the flavors linger for several minutes. Quite remarkable, really. I can't imagine the mouthfeel being any better. Exceptional.

D: Supremely drinkable. I could easily gulp this one down or sip it slowly. This beer will let you have it any way you want it. I could easily drink several of these in a row and I'm sure I would only regret it the morning after.

Overall: World class Belgian Dubbel. Somewhat different than others in the style and could possibly benefit from just a touch more complexity. In spite of that, it is supremely balanced and immensely drinkable. Would definitely buy again. (1,553 characters)

Pours out a cloudy rich brown color with a three finger light tan fluffy head. The retention leaves lacing rings all around the glass.

The aroma is sweet and sour. Full of ripe fruit. Hints of red grapes and hints of caramel.

The flavor is full of caramel and ripe fruit. hints of grapes, caramel, toffee, and even some chocolate. The alcohol brings in some sweetness as well. Hop bitterness is mild, reminds me of sour citrus fruit. The bitterness even lingers a bit on the tongue, but very mild.

Creamy mouth feel and a little slick on the palate. Finishes semi dry, lightly carbonated, and is very easy to drink.

Hands down one of my favorite Trappist Dubbel ales. (674 characters)

A: deep rich reddish brown, minimal head

S: there's a hint of alcohol soon followed by aromas of fruits, getting excited now

T: bubbly, alcohol is well hidden by the melange of fruits, pleasantly bitter aftertaste

D: absolutely amazing, but strong, definitely a keeper, worth the trouble to find (341 characters)

Apperance - A nice dark brown with quite a bit of frothy head that fades to a tiny white layer.

Aroma - Subtle malts and sweetness with quite a sour smell in this example

Taste - Almost a sour bitterness offset nicely by sugary notes. Complex malt character is present as well for a great balance.

Mouthfeel - Thick yet smooth to the point I notice it disappearing faster than anticipated. Fairly light carbonation. Aftertaste is sweet and somewhat syrupy.

Drinkability - As a huge dubbel fan, this is one of my favorites and i could drink this guy all day. That being said, it may be a tad too sweet for more than a single bomber in one sitting. (652 characters)

This was a bottle from 1972 (!) Tasted at Kroegske in 2001. Appearance: Reddish brown, light head, very clear. Aroma; Sherryish, malty, some oxidation. Flavor:rich, sherry-ish old ale flavors; rum, dates, etc. Mouthfeel: light bodied, with mild carbonation. Sherryish finish. Pretty unique! (290 characters)

#BOTG number 19! Yes, yes, I have NEVER had this beer somehow. My belgian self-education must happen at some point, right?

Poured from bottle slowly into my Chimay chalice. Pours a murky dark brown translucent color, some dark orange/brown hues appear as the light hits the bottom of the glass. A nice rich fluffy off white/tan head fills the glass, and stays around for awhile, covering the sides of the glass with thick lace and leaving a creamy 1 finger of head when its done receding. Beautiful looking beer. Smell- dark fruits like raisins, some aged cherries, brown sugar. Not all that much going on with the aroma. Taste- WOW. cognac, cherries, brown sugar, raisins. This is an incredibly creamy and rich ale, perfectly carbonated and a perfect example of the style. My night has been much improved having had this ale tonight. The yeast Westmalle uses is legendary and deservedly so. Amazing. (902 characters)

A truly exceptional brew from Westmalle.

A: This beer pours a dark, dark cloudy amber with an exceptionally large 1/5" head and a literal wall of foam left on the glass with rings. Unbelievable.

S: A very balanced nose full of hops and dark roasted malts. It smells like a tripel. Excellent balance.

T: The taste is oddly biased towards the hops. I did not expect this; this is my first dubbel. It reminds me of American IPA's in terms of the hop presence, but with the exceptional Belgian malt touch and ungodly bottle conditioning. This beer is just nearly perfect in every respect...I can't find any fault with it. Wait for it to warm up, too, it only gets better!

M: High carbonation typical for this style of beer, and very pleasant nonetheless. I find there's an ability to taste Belgian beers like this for longer, even as they warm up, than their American counterparts because it's so clean and flavorful.

D: Watch out, 7%. I finished my small bottle and decided to take a long break! (997 characters)

Deep rich brown, like a dark walnut wood. Smooth and subtle bubbling activity through the body of the beer and the full cocoa head.
Mellow malt aroma with hints of plums and alcohol.
Delicious malt flavor balanced with slight hoppiness and the plum hues in the background.
Medium mouthfeel covers the tongue with malt and then drifts away and leaves a lingering after taste of plumb/hops throughout the mouth and nose.
I would enjoying sipping this all night, very drinkable.
I've had this beer several times and refrained from reviewing it because I thought factors other than the beer might be contributing to my enjoyment of it. But it hits me the same way every time. For me, this is a Hall of Fame beer. (714 characters)

This pours a surprisingly dark brown with off white big frothy head

Smell is of cherries caramel and some bitter hops

The taste is of the same but wonderfully balanced between sweet and bitter notes - miles better than the triple a definite 5

Mouthfeel is refreshing and nicely carbonated but too prickly almost

Very good. Reminds me of bourbon whiskey

A- Opaque black-cherry color in the center with translucent red-grape color edges. Nice looking thick, creamy, off-white head. Yeast sediment

S- Smells like a mix of grape juice and bourbon whiskey. Molasses sweetness and grape tang.

T- Tastes the same way as it smells but the beer characteristics really become noticeable. Lots of high quality malt with tasty yeast and perhaps a pinch of hops.

M- Great feeling. Thick without being syrupy. Gentle carbonation doesn't get in the way

D- Sooo drinkable. The price is the limit on this beer (585 characters)

Murky dark mahogany in color.

Aroma of rum soaked oak, sweet fig, toast, candied raisin, brown sugar.

Rum raisin, brown sugar, slight metallic mineral water, toffee on the palate.

Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation, right on for this style and the flavor profiles this beer boasts.

Poured out into a goblet and the initial tan to brown foam came up two fingers then quickly dissapated.
The first smell is carmel malt and fruit. Slight alcohol aroma at the very end.
The taste yeilds slight hops with a malty dark sweet flavor that soon goes to a mild fruit like pear or apple. the hops come through last leaving a slightly bitter aftertaste.
Mouthfeel is clean and leaves a thin film on the back of the tounge.
