Medium-brown, milky appearance, light brown head that was solid and long-lasting. Plenty of champagne-style bubbles. Nose was herbal, perfumy, some citrus notes. Taste was mildly hoppy with herbal and spicy notes. Mouthfeel was smooth, not thin, not heavy. Well-balanced, robust flavor.

From 12/24/11 notes. Picked up a bottle of this at Spirits in Middletown, NJ. Poured from an 11.2 bottle into my Duvel tulip. Bottles on 29/9/11.

a - Pours a dark mahogany brown color with a reddish tint to it, moderate carbonation evident, and one finger of off white head. A minute or two of retention and some spotty lacing left on the glass.

s - Smells of Belgian yeast, dark fruits, bready malts, spices, wheat. Pretty ncie with the fruit and yeast.

t - Tastes of Belgian yeast, bready malts, spices, toasted malts, and very light dark fruits. Less fruit than the nose.

m - Medium body and moderate carbonation. Pretty easy to drink.

o - Overall a nice Belgian dubbel, and very good for the price and availability. Some nice dark fruits in the nose, and something I'd certainly buy again if I was in the mood for a dubbel.

Appearance: Beautiful dark reddish purple, good amount of an off-white head.

Smell: Strong fruit character, dark fruits and that aspect to the aroma that many refer to as 'grape bubblegum'. The sweetness is wonderful and is complimented greatly by the bready yeast character of the beer.

Taste: The flavors burst forth, strong and sweet tones of dark, goopy fruits are very noticeable. There is also an excellent yeast character involved that gives the sweetness some backbone. To add to the mix, there is a wonderfully subtle bitterness that never really catches your attention, but instead compliments and rounds out the beer into superb balance.

Mouthfeel: That wonderful champagne like carbonation that is characteristic of many belgian trappist ales. It stings slightly at first, but then clears the way and allows the flavors to come forth. The breadiness that I mentioned earlier also plays a role in giving the beer a more robust feel.

Overall: Pretty much a flawless example of what these Trappist monasteries put forth in their splendid dubbels. It has everything that this kind of beer is supposed to have, and adds a nice twist with a more grapey character than you would normally see. It goes wonderfully with cheese and by itself, very easy to enjoy. About the only bad thing I could say about this beer is that it is not the very best I have had, but with that said it is certainly up there with many other great ales.

The colour is brown with a tint of gold. The liquid is clear. The finger thick head is beige. Lots of lacing occurs.

The smell is light and smooth. Red berries, some Belgian yeast.

The taste is somewhat sour-sweet with distinct notes of red berries. Some alcohol. Medium body. Red wine gums and raspberry candy in the smooth aftertaste as well as nuts and almonds. Warming alcohol in the finish.

The carbonation is strong, almost sharp. The bubbles are small. The liquid is rather light.

A smooth and pleasant dubbel.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a Delirium Tremens snifter. Freshness date of 27/7/12 - meaning this was presumably bottled 27/7/07.

A - pours a translucent toasted brown color. Yields 2 fingers of creamy tan head. Body is a cloudy opaque dark brown (I always pour a little yeast into the glass for the full effect). Retention is decent, but the head fades to a 1/4" film within a few minutes. No lacing.

S - lots of dark, aromatic cocoa, sweet raisins and prunes, some booze, and candy-like sweetness. Some floral hops in the background.

T - flavors of milk chocolate, black tea and mild coffee. Hop and alcohol bitterness in the middle. More booze and raisiny sweetness toward the finish. Some bready toasted grains make for a dry finish. Flavors are generally what I would expect for a dubbel, but they are a little to sharp and unbalanced.

M - mouthfeel is ok, but it's a little too watery an a little over-carbonated.
