Pours from the bottle a cloudy ruby color and maintains a nice head well into drink, plus the foam lacing on the glass. Has a nice, sweet, fruit aroma. Tastes as good as it smells (if not better). Not quite as spiced as some other dubbels, but very enjoyable all the same.

Warming, dark, soft and tender. A touch bland?

Westmalle, a true classic when it comes to Belgian beer... For a beverage so close to my heart I'm amazed that I'm just getting around to singing its praises with a proper review. It's beautiful color is a deep auburn, like fine furniture. The carbonation is rather high, but an off- white head reminiscent of soda fades away to near nothingness quickly.

The scents coming in are my nose's absolute delight. Sweet candied apples, plums, dates, figs, molasses, nuts, and toffee form a vibrant melange. After a healthy swig, a burst of tart fruit flavor washes in. The silky, moderate mouthfeel immediately coats the palate, and some quality of pepper, spice, and alcohol evokes a slight tingling. A very bready base reveals itself after a moment, and the finish has a surprising dash of bitterness.

As no single one of the numerous great qualities is overbearing or out of balance with the others, it's easy to fathom Westmalle's excellent reputation. The body and alcohol content of it is also quite manageable, so this is a Belgian that can be enjoyed on easy-drinking occasions. Recommended for any lover of great beer, and a great place to start in the world of Trappist or Belgian beer in general.
