Pours out a cloudy rich brown color with a three finger light tan fluffy head. The retention leaves lacing rings all around the glass.

The aroma is sweet and sour. Full of ripe fruit. Hints of red grapes and hints of caramel.

The flavor is full of caramel and ripe fruit. hints of grapes, caramel, toffee, and even some chocolate. The alcohol brings in some sweetness as well. Hop bitterness is mild, reminds me of sour citrus fruit. The bitterness even lingers a bit on the tongue, but very mild.

Creamy mouth feel and a little slick on the palate. Finishes semi dry, lightly carbonated, and is very easy to drink.

Hands down one of my favorite Trappist Dubbel ales.

A: It looks like a murky chestnut color. Head is tan and three fingers. Retention is decent. Lacing is already apparent. Definitely a good looking beer.

S: I'm a little stuffy but I can still get some really rich dark fruits. There's some breadiness that's apparent too. It's more bread than grain. Like booze or cognac soaked figs or raisins or something.

T: Well the finish is amazing for 7%. Like amazing. There's something off in the front end that I can't put my finger on. It's just a hair in front of the dark fruits and caramel. I think it's actually something along the lines of grain. Well that quickly turns into an amazing array of dark fruits and rich cognac. That turns into this boozy caramel finish that's just so rich and delicious.

M: Medium to light mouthfeel that's smooth and delicious.

O: This is a classic for a good reason. In this case it's more than the sum of its parts. It's rich and decadent. Extremely pleasant to be sipped slowly at the end of the night.

#BOTG number 19! Yes, yes, I have NEVER had this beer somehow. My belgian self-education must happen at some point, right?

Poured from bottle slowly into my Chimay chalice. Pours a murky dark brown translucent color, some dark orange/brown hues appear as the light hits the bottom of the glass. A nice rich fluffy off white/tan head fills the glass, and stays around for awhile, covering the sides of the glass with thick lace and leaving a creamy 1 finger of head when its done receding. Beautiful looking beer. Smell- dark fruits like raisins, some aged cherries, brown sugar. Not all that much going on with the aroma. Taste- WOW. cognac, cherries, brown sugar, raisins. This is an incredibly creamy and rich ale, perfectly carbonated and a perfect example of the style. My night has been much improved having had this ale tonight. The yeast Westmalle uses is legendary and deservedly so. Amazing.

11.2 Oz poured into a goblet

A- Finger and a half of and off white head, under it sits a dark dark brown that is hazy, nothing gets through here. Ridiculous lacing and head retention.

S- Definitely Belgian, the belgian yeast smell is most dominant. Very sugary sweet and caramel sweet. A lot of dark fruits in here like figs, prunes and raisins. An excellent smelling dubbel.

T- A bitter sweet punch of dark fruits up front. A lot of those figs coming through as well as raisins. A lightly flavored malt profile, pretty breaddy with some wheat and rye characteristics. Caramel and candy sugar in here. Flavor is different with every sip but lacks power.

M- A unique frothy, foamy mouth feel. Its silky smooth and goes down pretty well. Leaves the mouth with a nice aftertaste and a refreshing feel.

O- I have not had too many dubbel's before, but this one is superb. Will be buying more Westmalle for sure.

appearance: dark ruby color but no opacity. huge, brown head with extensive lacing

aroma: citrus, fruit, bready and a hint of yeast

mouthfeel: slightly sour, a little bitter, easy to drink. again with a little citrus but as opposed to the aroma, this is definitely stronger on the yeast end

A-pours a dark ruby with three fingers worth of a rocky creamy head

S-rich malt, light molasses, caramel, and a decent amount of fruits like bananas and plums

T-taste matches the smell and exceeds it. Rich malt gives a good breadlike backbone, caramel and toffee, some dark fruit and raisins

M-medium body, very good amount of carbonation, leaves a bit of a raisin taste in the mouth

Overall an amazing beer. A truly great dubbel.

Drank on 3/15/2012
Poured from bottle into Chimay sniffer.

Appearance: An amber brown color, quarter inch head, no lacing. Center base carbonation leaves a continuous head in the center of the glass.

Smell: Clear light smell of sugar, plum, and raisins.

Mouthfeel: Cool, frothy, and excellent carbonation. Smooth on the palate.

Taste: Good, no big alcohol taste like the triple. Very strong raisin and sweet sugar aftertaste.

Overall: Excellent dark belgian dubel. Will return.
