Well since Azzurri looks like pure hell in the first half of the European Championships 2012, Im drinking. alot.

Very murky brown with a tan colored head. Loads of bubbles feeding what is a decent head. Just like Rochefort 8, loads of boozy cherries, but even more in this one. Just as much prunes and figs as well. I like how this smells.

More grains than Rochefort, but not as much as Westvleteren. This is much more slick than the others, with a nice prune and cherry sweetness. Carbonation really makes the flavors pop and disappear. Finishes exceptionally clean and smooth.

Served cool. Drunk June 2012 with a best-before date of June 2013. Not sure how old that makes it.

A - Cloudy medium brown, three fingers of greasy/soapy-looking cream colored head that dissipates in a few minutes.

S - A light, clean, semi fruity smell with candi and moderate malt. But faint. Smells like it's going to be disappointingly watery like some English mild.

T - In fact, it is disappointingly watery as foretold. Like the smell, the taste is muted and washed out. It's a good taste, but it lacks the hooks to grab onto my tongue and make something of itself. I'm left with a feeling of loss and regret. Maybe there's a little hint of something like pear at the end, just the memory of fresh pear minus the sweetness and most of the flavor. Reading the other reviews here, it's like we had completely different beers. Or maybe mine had all the flavor baked out of it in the oven or something.

M - Light bodied with some tingly carbonation.

O - Very disappointing. I had saved this towards the end of a huge haul with the other special Belgians, thinking it would be a special Belgian, but it's not. It's unattractive and faint. The best you could say about it is that it's kind of light and refreshing if you're ever in the mood for something innocuous that doesn't really get you involved or bogged down, like if you're meeting someone for a drink but don't really want to and just want to drink up and get out. But you're left wanting after each sip, wanting flavor and richness and body. It's hard to believe it's 7%. I'd have guessed 3.5%. If I'd never heard of this beer, I'd rate it average. I thought I had heard it was really good so it's extra disappointing. That's not extra points off, just context. It's not offensive, just weak. I feel kind of robbed, given what it could have been. Will not buy again and if you offered me this at a party I might abashedly ask if you had anything else.

Appearance: Fluffy, bubbly, light-tan head. Starts off aggressive, but the carbonation is too high to hold it all. Head drops to a spotty cap and solid collar after a couple minutes. Some sheets of lacing break apart and leave spotty notches. Dark amber/burgundy. Relatively clear with only a slight haze.

Smell: Candi sugar. Dark fruits in the vein of cherries, plums, and raisins. Sweetness jumps out, but it's nice and mellow. Yeast is restrained yet present. Clove and banana. Bready with some apple skin and grapes. Touches of caramel malts and sweetness. Candied goodness. Complex and mellow.

Taste: Yeast up front. Spicy like pepper with a big fruit layer thrown underneath. Clove drops and never lets go. Some ripe banana and raisins. Lots of raisins. Some crisp apple and caramel sweetness help balance things out. Powdery. Yeast pushes some earthiness as well. Candi sugar adds some much needed sweetness. Dustings of alcohol.

Mouthfeel: Dry with a slightly higher than anticipated carbonation. Prickly and almost thin at times, but not quite.

Overall: I had this shortly after I turned 21 and it blew my mind. Drinking it now, it's still pretty tasty. A lot less mindblowing, but well-balanced and nuanced. A touch too carbonated for me in the long run. Flavors are on point though.
