I didn’t know that Westmalle had another offering besides their tripel, but I’m glad I found it.

A: Pours half-head and half body – hazy, brownish-red under a pillow of tan bubbles. Slowly, the bubbles settle to a small, creamy layer of beige retention. Lacing sticks out everywhere, chunky and tall.

S: Light, fruity, and beautifully complex; the scents are very forward with raisin and white wine. Oaky alcohol, black cherry, toffee, clove, marshmallow, and candi sugar aromas are all there in a dark, sugary maltiness. Nice esters, cinnamon, and tannic husk come through via the proprietary yeast strain, a full and unique combination of earthy dryness.

T: Belgian flavors abound, with dark flavors of yeast and leafy grains; it starts with bold tobacco, toffee, sweet tea, caramel, maple, and cinnamon-raisin bread, an intricate tone of yeasts. Bitters come forward with grapefruit rind, lime, spicy hops, and clove, rounded out by a bright grape and fig sweetness. It’s dry, with those grassy hops and traces of roasts and burnt sugar; husky and dry. A taste of vinous alcohol and the spice of toasted bread finishes this brew out with a mild, astringent aftertaste.

M: Has a moment or two of biting bubbliness before it goes down, causing the bitterness to come out bigger than the rest. Odd for a dubbel, but not unwelcome; it’s still quite full-feeling.

O: Satisfying and complex, this trappist ended up giving me a memorable experience. It wasn’t an incredibly satisfying palate, but it was nice and well-rounded; I’d buy it again, especially if I could find it really fresh somewhere.

Poured from bottle into goblet style glass.

APP- A dark caramel color, poured with a healthy head, dissipated fairly quickly. Very little lacing.

Aroma - Hits strong with deep fruity aroma, leaving way for a chocolaty, sweet smell shortly after.

Taste - Very similar to aroma, big dark fruits leading off, then a thick sweet caramel - malty taste, which coats the mouth. Hints of acidity, but very little in the taste of alcohol.

MF - Light carbonation, medium bodied, but as mentioned coats the palate with an aftertaste of deep roasted caramel malts.

OVR - A very drinkable beer, quite complex, and the alcohol is very well masked. I find the balance between the sweetness of the roasted malts, and the acidity / sour of the fruitiness just a little off. The only reason it scored lower in certain areas.

Nice tan head at the top of a dark chocolate brown hazy ale. There was really very little lacing.

Nice bready yeast aroma; figs and prunes.

Dark fruits and grain, a nice blend. The molasses fringe on the taste is present, as is common with the style... But it's still one of my least favorite aspects of dubbels in general.

Smooth enough, a nice creamy mouthfeel.

Overall a pretty good dubbel, typical of the style. Good example of the style, I'm just not generally a fan.... I'd drink this again if someone offered it but I wouldn't seek it out.

Bottle, served in a chimay goblet. Best before May 27, 2012

A - Dark coffee mahogany colour, with 1" dense head. Quickly dissipated, no lacing

S - Brown sugar, dark fruits. All very subtle.

T - Medium-high carbonation off the top, leading into fig, low percentage dark chocolate, a little burnt malt. Mild astringent/sour aftertaste which is not pleasing.

M - Full bodied, but not too thick. Clings to the mouth.

Because I really enjoy dark Belgians of all kinds, I feel the bottle I had must have been past it's prime, as it's very close to the best-before date on the bottle. I've never had it before now, but will give it another go if the opportunity arises.

330ml bottle, poured into Leffe chalice. Dark brown, thick, one and a half finger head, reasonable retention. Smelled pleasant fennel but not much else. Tasted roasted Maris Otter style malts and fennel. Bitter aftertaste with a hint of citrus hop at the very end. Mouthfull was coarse, not what I expected. Overall I was slightly disapointed, not as complex as I would have liked, would probably benefit from aging.
