750mL bottle, bottled on April 12th, 2011

A: a highly hazed opaque brown. head starts billowing and promising. light brown highlights the white head. retentions is good as is the lacing.

S: a little hot. fruity. dark fruits. plums and figs. malty and chewy. a little bit muted.

T: grainy. wheat and pretty chewy. there is a significant amount of gas in this thing. almost can taste the CO2. finish is fruity. jam. grape jelly in particular.

M: like i said above, big time fizz. the carbonation is a little distracting. medium body in my opinion.

D: overall, im not really in love with this. a bit weak as far as dubbel's go. i would look elsewhere for solid examples. not bad by any means, just not great.

300th review on BA so why not make it a classic.

Look: Dark brown with red traces throughout the beer. 1/2 inch slightly off white head and great retention

Smell: Very fruity nose with dark and light fruits lots of apricot apple peaches raisin and figs.

Taste: Similar to the nose in the fact that it is a bit fruity on the palate with a fair amount of sweetness to it. Very complex flavor

Mouthfeel: Medium body and lots of carbonation

Overall: Just a classic beer that will always be a go to beer for me.

A: Dark brown with cherry hues and over a finger of billowed mocha foam. This falls slowly to a quilt of the same. Limited lace. Excellent clarity where allowed. (4.5)
S: nougat, bread (rye), cereal, cocoa, nuts (cashews). A hint of spice I’m having a hard time placing (nutmeg?). Slightest finish of praline. (4.5)
T: Cocoa, prune, sugar, bread, raisin, pralines again. Nice flavor, let this one warm up a bit folks. (4.5)
M: Medium on light for the body with carb a little on the hi side. Semi dry finish. All partshere are a bit off for me. (2)
O: Good example of the style. The mouthfeel on this is off for me, and some of the flavors are a bit tough to pick out (part of the fun!). It’s a good example of the style IMO. (4)

33cl bottle poured into a snifter

pours a fluffy two finger head which quickly dissipates to almost nothing. beer is a beautiful deep mahogany color.

aromas of fruits - plums, raisins, and cherries - as well as a strong malt presence. some alcohol presence at the end.

taste matched the aroma, only a bit of spiciness at the end. mouthfeel was the strong point here for me - perfectly carbonated, not too thick, but still with body.

overall, very enjoyable, it definitely stands up even more considering its price and availability.

Was very happy to have the opportunity to try this dubbel. Had read much about it and jumped at the opportunity.

Poured into a chalice. Was that chocolate or malt teasing my nose? Perhaps a combination of both. Beautiful color, rich red, very little head.

But it was the drinkable statue of this beer that put the smile on my face. Starts with a whiff of malt on the tongue, which quickly teases with alcohol then finishes with a touch of bitterness. Heavenly.

If I have any caution with this beer, it is to be concerned with what food you pair it with. It can be overwhelmed by strong, spicy food to the point where you might miss the complexities of this beer. Take my advice and order simply. Or better yet, enjoy this beer with an open chalice, allowing the aroma to breathe. Take it slow and enjoy it on its own. You'll be glad you did.
