Pours a hazy dark red-brown, two fingers of cream colored dense foam, fades to a thin ring, spray of lace down the glass. Smell: dark brown sugar, brown bread, dates, mildly spicy and grainy. Taste: caramel, cherry, dates, mildly grassy and earthy, buttered brown bread. Very nice. Bottled 2/14, best by 2/16.

A dark beer with smell of spicy notes. A very smooth beer with notes of spices. Well done by Westmalle

Outstanding as is expected with a Trappist ale. Lots of carb, refreshing.

330ml bottle poured into a Troubadour tulip glass

Look: Dark, opaque brown with some ruby hints if held up to the light. Very thick and frothy khaki/tan head. Plenty of lacing as the head recedes.

Smell: The merest hint of alcohol but mostly dark malts, yeast and some fruit. Quite a 'dark' sweet smell with pronounced spice candy notes on agitation.

Taste: Very malt-forward with sweet, candy flavours. The maltiness continues through to the finish along with some yeastiness. Hop bitterness is notable by its absence, as is any significant spiciness.

Feel: Quite a thick, heavy mouthfeel but not at all overbearing. Little carbonation and, for something that's 7% ABV, very little booziness. Dangerously easy drinking.

Overall: Once again, Westmalle hits the bullseye - generally speaking, I prefer their Trippel but this is a stunningly drinkable dubbel even if it seems to be lacking in the spice department. Stunningly smooth and well worth a punt.
