This has got to be one of the darker tripels around, quite amber, almost red in low-lighting. Served in a pretty little tulip glass it had a thin little head that persisted quite nicely.

Smells of very soft caramel-dipped fruitiness with much more phenolic verve surrounding it. Light pils sweetness forms the base for bready, whispy, clovey scents wafting about. Not terribly effervescent, something I look for in a trippel, but the carbonation was very low from the tap. Aromatic enough, though, and warmer temperatures brought out more cherry-lite scents with barely banana and bubblegum edges.

Taste hits all the notes in an interesting pattern. A little caramelized and candy-ish at first, quintessential light breadiness and elegant Westmalle-type phenols are deftly integrated to round out the sweetness. Hops are moderate and pleasing, really finishing the quiet but noticeable interplay of sugar, vanilla, clove, and plush malt complexity. Felt a little heavy and thick on the tongue, but smooth and enjoyable nonetheless.

A good American-made trippel. Solid on all accounts and quite a night maker at the pub!

Sampling right now on 7/29/14. My friend Rob brought me 2 bottles of this from their trip to Michigan last week. 4-pack is $12.00 (12 ounces). Bottle chilled down to 36 degrees F in my beer cooler and poured in a glass boot from Frankenmuth Bavarian Inn in Michigan.

Pours a apricot in color with a good 2+ finger white foamy head that settles down to a good 4mm. Spotty lacing is seen when sipped. The aroma is very pleasant and is of bananas, cloves and citrus for the most part. Even more going on with the taste. Lots of sweetness is right up front with the above flavors with some honey, black licorice with a hint of coriander even. Not to sweet and this is a sipper with the high alcohol content that warms your tummy. Perfect carbonation and full bodied with lots of good flavor. Goes down fairly easy but take your time and enjoy.

12 oz bottle poured into pint glass

A-cloudy golden apricot color, 2 finger head that quickly receded, little lacing

S- banana, bubblegum, cloves, citrus

T- lots of sweetness up front, candied sugar and honey, bubblegum, cloves, coriander, almost black licorice, lemon, slight hops on finish

M- medium-heavy syrpy feel with high carbonation, smooth and dry

O- interesting American style Trippel. It's a little sweet for me but I love the complexity of Aroma and flavor

A: Honey amber tones, cloudy with particles also floating within, large and small bubbles rising to the surface, one finger of white head.

S: Very complex floral and fruity bouquets, true Belgian yeasts, mold, apples, peaches and pears, some alcohol, lots of floral qualities like a perfume.

T: Seriously good. I get the floral notes, fruitiness, perfume, melon, candy corn, russet pears, Chinese pears, Belgian yeast, and mold. Its quite sweet but well balanced with all the complexities. Light bitterness lingers on the tongue.

M: Thick, syrupy body, medium carbonation.

O: Very surprised by this one. I like it more than some Belgian trippels I’ve had from Belgium, though, this one is from Michigan. Its appearance, smell, taste, mouth feel, and overall impression put this one near the top of my list. Great stuff coming from Michigan! Found it in Saginaw at Opperman’s Cork-n-Ale.

Undated bottle at 55 degrees into standard pint
Aroma of spice and yeast
Head average (3 cm), off white, fizzy, rapidly diminishing to broken 1-2 mm ring and some small islands
No lacing
Body is medium yellow with slight haze
Flavor begins slightly sweet with yeast and spice; a slight alcohol burn becomes very pronounced immediately after swallowing. No hops or diacetyl are noted.
Palate is medium, slightly oily, with lively carbonation.

Over the years I have had various Dragonmead brews and have yet to be impressed. This is no exception.
