Beer review from 9/17/11; pours a dark brown color with a reddish hue around the edges and a foamy tan 2 finger head that fades quickly and left weak spotty lacing.
Smells of caramel, syrup, sweet malt, dark fruit like dates, plums and cherry, molasses, brown sugar and alcohol; this beer smells like a barleywine, with a very sweet nose that was fruity and sugary with an almost red wine like essence.
Tastes of caramel, syrup, sweet malt, dark fruit like dates, plums, cherry and rotten grapes, molasses, brown sugar, cinnamon, allspice, pepper and other spices, yeast, grains and alcohol; this beer is so sweet that it borders on too sweet, with a grainy, fruity sweetness that dominates the nose and palate. There is an oily hop residue after each swallow, but no hop taste, and as the beer warms the fruits and sour fruit flavors become more evident. I assume that the ABV is high based on the characteristics, but don't know for sure.
Mouthfeel is watery, slick and smooth, with basically zero carbonation, a heavy body and a heavy feel that is chewy, but not as heavy as a stout.
At first I thought that this was too sweet, but it got better as it warmed and the sweet flavors brought out more dynamics and enjoyment as this flowed down. A good beer, but certainly not a session beer, yet still worth trying.

On-tap at Dragonmead. Served in a taster glass.
A - A sliver of tan foam quickly settles to a partial collar and not much else. Very dark body, mostly black with a hint of brown at the edges.
S - Candi sugar, dark fruits, phenolic yeast, dark roasted grains, licorice, banana, and some spicy alcohol esters.
T - Taste is largely similar, but with more emphasis on the fruity flavors. Dark candi sugar, Belgian yeast, and malted grains round things out.
M - Medium body, smooth texture, medium-low carbonation, and a light alcohol presence. Guessing this is around 10% or so.
D - Not bad at all. It's pretty much stock for a BSDA, but there are no obvious flaws. If you're into this style you won't be disappointed. One of the best offerings I had from Dragonmead.

Had a snifter at the Kalamazoo Beer Exchange of the pitch-black ale. Despite the color, I didn't pick up any roasted character, instead there was a big sweet mix of banana, plums, and toffee. I'd have liked it a touch drier, but it's not a bad take on the style. Give it a shot.

Very dark brown/black body with a half finger head. unexpected chocolate and coffee in aroma. Not really the dark fruit Belgian dark string I was expecting. Cocoa, roasted malts, dark candy sugar. Light licorice and vanilla. Makes me think more of stout. Thicker body for the style and moderate carbonation. The best tasting beer of the 7 or 8 I tried, still not a great representative of the style though.

Had on-tap at Dragonmead.
Appearance: Black. No head on my beer at all. Kind of like black water or something. But let's be honest, appearance matters not. I mean... it's nice, but... you know.
Smell: Prune/fig/grapes... dark fruit, dark fruit, dark fruit. Sweet and tart. Pleasing on the nose and very inviting. At 11%, that's not there at all. Also, this beer doesn't have that almost overly sweet aroma that some others from the style have.
Taste/feel: Exactly as the smell is, but that tartness is more obvious, as you'd expect. Sweet, but not too much so. Again, dark fruits all around. Maybe a slight sort of spiciness, but I don't know where that's coming from. I was told this beer had a clear alcohol presence, but I didn't notice it. The warmth, sure, but nothing in the taste. Definitely a bigger sort of beer. Sweet, tasty, and a sipper.
My favorite I've had from Dragonmead, I'd say, and it seems that I'm not alone. A must-try if you visit the brewery.
