If lingering a while in Oberammergau, the Maxbräu at hotel Maximilian is a fine brewpub stop for some tasty, freshly brewed beers in a fabulous atmosphere. Caveat: The brewpub itself is not a Germany must-do - it brews I think two standard beers (an unfiltered Kellerbier and usually a wheat), and some people, especially looking for that typical Munich beer hall or old town Gasthof might consider it too modern. But of all of the more modern brewpubs I've been to in Germany, this ranks as a top favorite, and I think a commendable stop if in the area.
Oberammergau is one of those well-known authentically charming little Bavarian villages between Munich and Garmisch-Partenkirchen and, like both, a mighty good base town for exploring the region (Linderhof palace, Ettal, Wieskirche, Ammer valley). It is world famous for its passion play performed every ten years since 1634 (2010 next).
Except maybe during the summer of the passion play, the lively town during the day I found transforms to an über-peaceful, laid-back night setting - except for maybe the sounds of livestock all about. This can be a good thing, especially when there is at least a worthy night-spot outing for beer.
The hotel Maximilian is just off the old town center and is one of the pricier up-scale locations (we did not stay here - but rather on a country farm nearby) - a nice building indeed - sleek modern yet blending well with the old. Inside is housed a superb brewpub. Ok, the beer itself, though very good, is nothing to drive into town for. It was, however, super fresh and delicious and I & my group found ourselves here the latter part of each of our three nights. It was the interior design an overall atmosphere that really helped seal the deal. Very cool mix of traditional-themed wooded interior managing nicely with some modern fixtures.
As one enters, your eye immediately is taken by the modern, shiny brass mash tuns and control panel of the brew system right by the door (and as you step on way to WC's, the area and stairs themselves have windows allowing views of the larger brewing area beneath - nice). Taking up the middle area is the large, interesting bar. Throughout, the lighting fixtures make interesting contrasts (standard, track and recessed), and even the bathrooms rank.
Just a well put-together establishment with fresh beer and great food to match.
