Set in the downtown atmosphere of a large public college campus, the Black Bear Brewery features 8 taps on hand five days out of the week (tuesdays through saturdays). Beer Prices are 3.50 to 4.00 a glass with a mug club in mind with flights being served every night. Although it is near a larger campus, the brewery is fresh with an emphasis on thinking local and accommodates all types of patrons. Entertainment features a folk/bluegrass band every thursday and hosts other musical acts at least twice a month. The taproom seats around 40 visitors with max capacity around 100 people featuring a popcorn machine, brick oven pizza, foosball, and darts. Very low key for the setting, the Black Bear Brewery seems to have it's fair share of customers and locals with a heavy investment on local art and community, all here seem to be extremely friendly and welcoming to whomever walks through the doors. The environment is set around, with or without intention, being able to truly relax and be around people who really know the trade of brewing. A high recommendation for anyone in the central Maine/Bangor area

I frequent the Black Bear Brewery quite often since I fell in love with the place half a year ago. Tim Gallon owner/brew master has done an incredible job with the place. The beer is great and cheaper than anywhere else in town (for the quality at least). Right now, just about every Thursday night a local bluegrass/folk band plays for the crowd. Once or twice every month, musician Eric Green comes in to play his blues for us all.

On Oct. 31 the tap room was expanded to 3 times its original size. At the moment there is a dart board, table soccer, and a few decks of cards and a cribbage board if you like games. There is free popcorn made fresh daily as well! The set up on that is pretty much self-serve, but at the end of the night when the bartenders are wrapping up they'll be sure to ask you if you want any before they dump it!

Which brings me to the service! The bartenders are great, friendly and knowledgeable. They always greet you with a smile and do their best to keep up with the sometimes very busy bar. I have seen Tim himself jump behind the bar on big nights (usually holiday events) to keep the beer flowing!

The beer is awesome also. My favorite is probably the porter though the saison is also very good. Beers rotate with the seasons so you'll never be bored. They also use a hop infusion device on certain nights to keep things even more interesting. If you like what you try you can even get a growler filled up to go!

Trying to chip away at the Maine Beer Trail, and this one happened to be nearby some errands we had to do while I was visiting my folks in Maine. Orono is a fun little college town, and this brewery/taproom fits that feel perfectly. When you walk in there is an L-shaped bar with taps behind it, a couple of tables scattered around, and a popcorn machine. Very quaint and very fun. They had 6 taps available, and beer to go in growlers. If you find a beer you like I suggest a growler...I got one for $10 total. $2 dollar glass fee and $8 fills...fantastic. No food here, but you are right next to the best eats in the Orono area without trucking it to Bangor. Margarita's, Pat's Pizza, BearBrew Pub, etc, all within walking distance. Worth a trip up to visit if you are in the Bangor area for a while. If you can't make it up, Black Bear is distributing to a lot of the local bars in the Bangor metro and beyond, so you can likely find some of their flagships around.
