This is a fairly small, intimate place to enjoy a beer and dinner. The staff are knowledgeable about their beers. Their beer selection in the bar and bottle shop next door is not the most extensive in town, but the buyer, Drew, is very knowledgeable and friendly. I asked him for some of his current favorites and he provided me with two new breweries to try (Old SchoolHouse and Gigantic). Each of which I was very pleased with. Great back patio for summer evenings.

Overall, this is a great spot to eat and drink that is tucked in nicely in North Portland.

For some reason, I always have a difficult time describing this place, when I tell someone I stopped by (and why I like the place). The H&V is basically a two room afair, with a small bottle shop on your left and the small beer bar/restaurant to your right, as you look in from N. Kilingsworth. The place has something of a funky, almost divish atmosphere, and there's no denying that the setting here is very low key. In some ways I think, the tap selection in the beer bar typifies this place. There are only 8 beers on draft, and at first that seems a bit disappointing, until you take a closer looks at what they have available. On this day, the selection included the Cafe Racer 15, a biere de mars by Oakshire, a sour from Commons brewing, and then the cuvee de jacobins rouge (I believe). In other words, my initial look of disappointment quickly morphed into a big goofy smile. My experience in the bottle shop was similar to my experience in the beer bar. Again, they don't have the largest selection of bottles, but what they do have is pretty interesting, with some real gems.

Service was very, very good on the day I visited. My server had been around and really new his stuff (Drew I believe), and service was otherwise always quick, efficient and friendly. Frankly, I very rarely encounter this level of service; most of the time I'm just happy if the bartender or server gets my order right. So that was a big plus here. Pricing was also pretty reasonable. Generally, you can order most beers by glass or by pint, but they also have a small size if you want to try several different items. Frankly, even the small size was more than generous I thought, and I think my entire bill came to just over $7 (for a glass of Oakshire and racer 15).

Have been meaning to try the food, as it always looks great, but I was still full from my pizza over at the b2 taphouse. Oh well, one of these days...

This place is great!

This is a welcomed drinking hole over in North Portland. Giving a decent Euro-Cafe vibe, The Hop & Vine is a melding of Wine, Beer, and Spirits. If you're a geek of any libations, you'll enjoy this place.

With a recent expansion, The Hop & Vine is one part bottle shop (beer & wine), and one part bar with a large outdoor patio area. Of course any bottles from the adjacent space can be opened on site for a small corkage fee. Eight beer taps, usually some off beat stuff not often found at other bars, or some great craft beer staples.

Also, events happen regularly with beer trivia nights, meet the brewer nights, bottle release parties, mixology events, you name it.

Food is pretty awesome. High quality ingredients, and creative dishes. My personal favorite is the bacon covered dates. Slowly but surely the Hop & Vine is making it into the ranks for the top beer geek destinations in Portland. And if you're ever in North Portland, shame on you if you haven't visited.
