Pours almost jet black with a very active, brown, half inch of foam. The foam quickly settles to a ring but that disappears later on.

Very pleasant aroma of chocolate, chocolate malts, cherries, wood, and a bit of vanilla. The roasted profile seems like this one is a few months old (I’ve had this one at least 4 months). The aroma settles to a subtle chocolate bouquet with hints of berries, dates and figs. There’s also some notes of warm milk as the beer comes to room temp. Maybe some hints of sweetened or flavored coffee.

Tastes of bitter-sweet chocolate, nuts and a bit of seltzer water. Some dry chocolate oatmeal flavor and a bit of raisins.

Taste is quite thin and a bit too carbonated in the finish. This one smells a bit better than it tastes. An average stout.

Gooooooooddd morning, quarantine & isolation! My goodness, but the reefer is giving up its dead here at Chez Woody as the purge of the Bottle Backlog continues unabated! The Reaper didn't come for me inna night & I feel pretty Stout today! My mother asked if I am concerned for my Mortality. As a GWI vet, not as much as on my birthday in 1991. Ale, no!

From the Bottle: "Do You Dare?"

I Pop!ped the cap to begin today's celebration in the face of a global pandemic. My slow, gentle C-Line Glug caused a pseudo-cascade that formed into two-plus fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, deep-brown head with excellent retention. Color was solidly Black/Opaque (SRM = 44), allowing ZERO light penetration. Nose had a rich chocolaty/smoky/coffee-like aroma! Mmm. I just finished my morning cuppa joe & this was very evocative of my brew. I take mine like my women - hot & black! 8=) Mouthfeel was big, full & creamy, like a dollop had been scooped into my mouth & onto my tongue! Mmm. The taste was like the epitome of this site's "Style Guide": " a coffee, chocolate, [and, in my case/]or lightly burnt grain character, although without a sharp bite." Spot on, lads!

Remember, rate to Style & NOT to Personal Taste (except for "Overall", which is your opportunity to let us know how you really felt about the beer.

This had a beautiful richness without being either sweet or bitter, the two extremes that I usually get in Stouts.

Then again, I do not often have to opportunity to drink, review & rate a Foreign/Export Stout, hence my refresher on the Style Guide. I once had an LPO, who upon being asked a question to which he did not know the answer, pointed to the manual & instructed me to "read up on it & report back for everyone's edification." He was being a smarta*s, but it was actually prescient advice.

Back to the beer. Finish was semi-dry, nowhere close to sweet at any point. Eminently drinkable & a real shame that it is Retired. YMMV.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into an imperial pint glass.

A: The beer is a deep dark brown color, with a thin dark brown head that fades quickly and leaves a thin on the glass.

S: The aroma contains dark fruit, licorice, coffee, chocolate, roasted malts and a faint touch of hops.

T: The taste starts out a strong dark fruit flavor, then some background flavors of coffee and milk chocolate come in. The malt character is on the thin side for the style. The hops presence is mild but complementary and brings a little bit of balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and a little smooth but a bit watery, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is sticky.

D: A little tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, good kick, decent representation of style, a decent beer overall but there are certainly better alternatives within the style.
