Compared to Guinness on tap in Ireland this beer is very, very disappointing. Perhaps back in the days before craft beers took off, this was a great alternative to the big U.S. breweries. No days it really doesn't stand up to the amazing stock of microbrew stouts available. That said, sometimes a pint of Guinness just hits the spot.

Favorite beers (for comparison, after all taste preferences are subjective): Elysian's Daedalus Irish Stout, Rogue's Hazelnut Brown Nectar, Allagash's White Ale, New Belgium's 1554, Full Sail's Wassail, etc. Beers I don't like: IPAs (with few exceptions)

Reviewed from notes.

A. The same dark brown color as usual, but only has a loose-bubbled finger of light cream-colored foam for a head, and no lacing at all.

S,T. Mildly toasted and sweet bready malts and a whisper of chocolate aroma/flavor... Not as strong as I've come to expect from well-made stouts... Severely lacking in charred or black coffee character. And this is supposed to be the "Extra" version??? Not enough bittering in the finish, either.

M. Lighter body with highly active carbonation. Unusually 'crisp' texture for a stout because of this, and I'm not certain that the high levels of fizziness match up well with the flavor profile.

A-dark brown with a thin tan head

S-a bit of robust malts. smells bitter and smells as if it has a fairly high abv.

T-comes in with a decently dark and bitter taste of roasted malts. a good taste with a faint after-taste of licorice. its an okay taste. it seems to change a lot. sometimes i get more of a roasted malts after-taste.

M-medium creamy carbonation with a dry finish

O-definitely a decent drinking stout. of course its not something i'd go to over many other easily obtainable stouts. the tastes are clean though, and if i'm stuck drinking this, i'll be okay with it!

Guinness Extra Stout pours a very dark brown, with some ruby near the edges. A one and a half-inch head of a light tannish head caps the brew, leaving a moderate lace throughout. As expected, rich roasted malt aromas dominate, with hints of chocolate and coffee, just hints. This brew was much sweeter then expected. As you may have noticed, Stouts do not get their fair share of ratings on our page, yet whenever we do get the chance to share them with you, we are always pleasantly surprised. Extra stout brings flavors of rich coffee, chocolate, sweet and smoky malt, and slight hop bitterness to the pallet. Lighter in carbonation, the brew features an amazingly smooth mouthfeel, and is medium-high in body. Sip and enjoy the flavors and history of this World-famous brew!

Pretty good brew! This one apparently was brewed in Canada. Its has really nice smell with a sweet malt with light hop finish on the nose. The taste little less impressive but its super smooth and very easy to drink to be an extra stout. I would recommend trying one out if you have a need for some Caramel style Malts!

A- An aggressive pour into a 16oz pint glass. Dark brown with ruby highlights and a chunky almost 3 finger head. Tan with exceptional lacing down the sides of the glass.

S- Some sweet roast malt and hops, almost has like an almond syrup flavor. Hints of chocolate, cream and I'm picking up some alcohol. Kind of a lack luster smell though, nothing big and overwhelming.

T- some smokey nutty caramel, and plenty of malt. Just a touch of hop bitterness. Bready and sweet.

M- Fairly mild for an "extra stout" beer. Actually comes accross as thin in my opinion. could use some more body to it.

O- The flavors are ok with this but it is clearly not in the running for worlds greatest stout. Comes accross as just a middle of the rood stout. Could use more body and some bigger smells and flavors. Still a good everyday beer to keep around.

First off this bottle was brewed in Canada not Ireland.

It poured very dark brown with a big white fluffy head and left a lot of lacing.

The smell wasn't too strong had an aroma of caramel and burned malts.

Tasted very malty, quite sweet pretty good really.

Was very smooth with very little carbonation a creamy texture.

Overall I'm not really a big Guinness fan but I liked this. I would buy it again but am looking to try the foreign version next.

12 oz bottle I purchased from Hollinghead's in Orange, CA. Was excited to try it until I saw the poor reviews. Poured in a pint glass, reviewed live.

A- Quarter inch tan head. Small bubbles and abysmal retention. This isn't good. Dark cola brown, not the ruby I was hoping for.

S- Big whomp of malt and chocolate. Strong smell but not tremendously appealing.

T- Hit with the bitter chocolate and coffee tones after the malt overwhelms you. Hmm. Not terrible. Kind of has something to it.

M- Extremely carbonated, to the point of excess. Medium feel and a smooth finish.

O- After I've had the original Guinness in Dublin, how can I be anything but disappointed? Won't buy again.
