Appearance: Poured from the 11.2 fl oz bottle into a pint glass. The beer is black (of course). I can not see through it even when held right to the light. My pour produced a nice tan head about 1 inch in height. The head has some staying power before finally settling to a full cover on the beer. Leaves just a little lacing down the glass as it is consumed.
Smell: As good as the beer looks, it comes up short in the aroma. Minimal scent of some roasted malt, roasted barley, slight roasted nuttiness around midway through as it warms a litte.
Taste: Much like the scent, the taste is weak. Much less flavorful than other black lagers that I have had, this one comes up short in the big roasted malt flavors that I prefer. A very faint bitterness on the finish, hardly noticeable.
Mouthfeel: Somewhat light in body with decent carbonation. Light and lively on the tongue. While I realize that this is a different style it is a far cry from a Guinness Stout.
Overall: On sale for St. Pat's, I bought a 12-pack (actually about a 11 pack of 12 fl oz bottles) for $12.99. Not a bad price to try this out. Overall, I applaud Guinness for doing something different, I just think that this a bit subdued and "safe".
