After being mocked by a co-worker for "Calling myself a beer drinker without ever having Guinness," I decided it was a time. So, I grabbed a bottle and poured it into a pint glass.
Extra dark body on the pour, with only a little light getting through via a small red hue. The puffy, tan head sat around for a while at the top. All in all it added up to a good-looking brew. Faint hints of coffee and roasted malts on the nose, with a caramel undertone. Certainly pleasant, but not really as notable as it should be.
Sipping it reveals a different character: abundance. The smells really come to life when the liquid hits the palate. A heft body carries a licorice-like flavor across the tongue, only to turn a bit bitter and unlikable at the back of the tongue. Otherwise, it's quite a tasty, malty journey along the way. Clean and easy finish does well to let the flavors speak for themselves. Becomes even tastier as it warms, though the glass remained lace-free.
Overall/notes - Well, there you have it. Now I guess I can officially say I'm a "beer drinker." Not a bad brew at all, and certainly could provide a good alternative while bar-hopping (though I haven't tried the far-more-common Draught). I look forward to more of these in the future.
