A - Solid black with brown edging, full tan head, fading very slowly. Lacing of the first order.

S - Full roast malt, tobacco and coffee, chocolate nib.

T - Following the nose, with a gradual fade to bitterness. Slight minerality in the close, with a bitterness that hangs around on your palate until it is reset.

M - Silky and smooth, fairly light, all told. The dry close is mild but persistent.

O - An old favorite; full and tasty. If it is fresh and well handled, this shows why Guinness is stout for so many people.

Had any Guinness there might be on tap while on honeymoon with my wife in Ireland. It's pretty good to start with, but if you've ever had it in its home country, at the beginning of the biggest adventure in your life, with the love of your life, in a tiny pub, with a two minute pour and fresh salmon supper- you'd probably give it a five, too.

This is an old one (looks like the bottle in the picture). I raided it from my friend Tony's fridge (the dude has beers he never drinks or knows he has!!)

Appearance (4.25) : Wonderfully large creamy cap, beige in appearance. Body is dark roast coffee brown-black and 95% opaque.

Aroma (4.5) : Freshly twisted black licorice, gawsh...just a sweet sweet black licorice candy smell, it so wonderful and delicious smelling. Smells like a candy store. Underneath that is some jelly bean and light roast aroma. It's just SO good to smell!!! Bouquet is medium strength.

Taste (4) : Respectable. That's totally the word. You respect this beer. The dark black spiced licorice comes out at the nose and the finish. In the middle is a smooth, balanced roast flavor that is so rich, almost bourbon-like. The hops are just a smidge overpowering, I'd say it's like a 65/35 ratio. The bourbon sweetness rescues that slight tip, however. Solid FOUR.

Mouthfeel (3.75) : Slightly creamy, medium bodied. Ends dry and with that bourbon flavor. Reminds me of high school getting tipsy with friends. It could use some more body depth however.

Overall (4.04) : This beer is fantastic. I like it a lot, and it's popular for a reason. Great stout, has a bit too much hops, but the bourbon sweetness makes it worthwhile. Love the licorice, too. Big fan of black licorice and I like it in my stouts. Try it if you haven't yet (and who hasn't?).

*The version reviewed is the Canadian version at 6.0% abv, not the one on Beer Advocate that says Canada and is 5.0% abv.*

A- Dark and black with red tints on the bottom of glass. Big khaki head that died to a finger and a half of solid looking foam and some nice lacing.

S- Roasted malts and dark fruitiness. Light coffee and chocolate.

T- Darkly, roasted malts and raisin type darker fruitiness. Has a sharper bitterness than the Guinness Draught from the malts or maybe the grains. There is a light coffee and chocolate note as well. It's like a powdered dark chocolate milky taste. Finish is malty and of raisins with the extra stout's distinguished bitterness before it dries. As it warms, there is a black liquorice type note that comes out.

M- This beer is on the fuller side of medium. I think it is very crisp and easy drinking still. This bridges the gap very nicely between the Guinness Draught drier type stout and imperial stouts well. Even though it's a fuller feeling Guinness, it's still got a great drinkability.

Overall this is excellent. If you are a fan of Guinness's products like myself, you must try this! If you like the different stouts from around the world but never tried the Extra Stout, you'll like it. It's a sweeter, bolder/sharper in flavor than Guinness Draught, and it's richer in body. Go get you some!

12oz bottle from my local Meijer. Coming from a stout beginner, this beer strikes me for it's toasty malts and ammonia notes, and great lacing. A pleasant, subtle numbness and warmth create a great mouthfeel. Tobacco, ultra-dark roast coffee, and dark chocolate round out the flavor profile to provide an enjoyable, complex stout.
