Poured from a 14.9 oz. can. Has a dark golden color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is mild, some malts. Taste is malts, grains, refreshing, very light hops. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a little light for the style, but nonetheless a refreshing beer on a hot summer day.

Aroma: A blend of malt, citrus and hops.

Taste: Subtle malts open up to bitter hops and orange peel.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, dry.

Overall: A lot better than expected, but it was balanced and not without taste.

look: 3.25 | smell: 3.25 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3.25

Appearance 3.25: Poured out a lovely golden color. Completely transparent. OK head with decent lacing.

Smell 3.25: Bouquet is somewhat lacking: acetone, lagery...yeah. Still, there is absolutely nothing WRONG with the bouquet on this brew.

Taste 3.5: Lager! Yep, that's what this is. Front is slightly sweet, but there is a nice dryness that comes in. Middle is balanced: malty, with a hint of hops and a slight, golden sweetness. Finish is slightly dry, but pleasant with the tell-tale lagery taste notes: bubble-gum, corn, acetone...hey, it's a lager. Kind of. Aftertaste is short, corny and dry.

Mouthfeel 3.5: Good representative of the style.

Overall 3.25: OK, beer. Good, but not great. I was expecting an English type of pale ale...boy, was I wrong. DO NOT buy this beer and pay upwards of $10 for four if you are expecting anything other than an Irish-brewed lager. Know what you are getting before you plunk down your hard-earned sheckles.

Served in a shaker pint glass.

Yeah, I bought the variety pack just so I could try this new offering. Sue me. This stuff pours a clear sunset brass topped by a finger of lightly off-white foam. The nose comprises white bread, mild grass, light flowers, and a touch of straight barley. The taste brings in more of the same, though the grass and bread seem old, not all that "fresh", if that makes any sense. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a fluid feel. Overall, it's a passable little pale ale, nothing close to special, but it ensures that this variety pack doesn't have any glaring holes.

Smithwick's Pale Ale

Notes: Deep gold in color. Frothy 1-fingered head holds well. Average lacing. Floral and fruity in the nose. Flavor: Fruity and floral. Sweetish grainy malt - honeyish. Grassy, herbal hops. Median bitterness. Finishes dryish with grassy, herbal and floral notes. Average, but well-made. Pale ale? Yes. That adds perspective... good example of the English style. Worth trying.

Tarnished yellow in color with a slightly hazy, viscous appearance. Poured with a thick, fizzy white foam that quickly reduced to a wispy cap. Earthy, bready malt aroma followed by light herbal and slightly spicy hop notes. This needed to warm up considerably to allow the aromas show. Medium bodied, creamy smooth feel down the middle with tangy hop bitterness around the edges. Bready malt flavor up front followed by herbal hops and a spicy hop bite through the middle. Buttery bready malt, herbal hop and lemon zest notes at the end. Finished crisp and incredibly dry. Possibly the driest beer I've ever tried.
