Appearance: Poured from a bottle into an Irish pub style (real) pint glass, in low altitude Galway, Ireland, on September 15th, 2010. Pours a VERY dark ruby with a brilliant display of downward bubbles. Creamy head with excellent retention. Appears clear, alive, and very inviting, though it's too dark to see through.
Smell: Smells of roasted barley and biscuity hops. A scent of moderate strength. My nose is broken so it's difficult to detect flavours.
Taste: A dash of cream and then a perfect balance of slightly roasted barley and a note of hops, with a cool, refreshing finish. A well balanced, perfect body, though the finish is a bit wetter than I like in a stout. There is a very faint note of coffee and maybe caramel, though these flavours are very toned down in comparison to Guinness Draught. Very well built, a stout done right like only Arthur can.
Mouthfeel: Good carbonation but not overdone. What's amazing about this beer is how good its body plays on the palate despite its 7.5% abv. Good thickness. Great body. Near perfect smoothness and wetness for the style. Just a touch too smooth and wet; I'd like a biteen more coarseness and dryness.
Drinkability: I'm going to go broke here in Ireland buying this over and over, but I'm going to be happy while I do it. An amazing beer in my favourite beer style. Hides its high ABV impeccably well. Very drinkable. An incredible beer.
Had to revise this review and tone it down following changes to the review weights. After a revisit, I reduced its score to accurately reflect its quality.
