Ok, I've been drinking and reviewing beers long enough that there is no excuse for me not to review this one. My goal, however is to not let nostalgia get in the way of an honest semi-objective analysis (this was my very first beer).

A - Body is dark dark brown-to-black. Completely opaque. Yields a finger of super fine khaki-colored head that lasts forever (thank you, nitro can). Good lacing. Love the way this beer pours and looks.

S - Some cocoa with milder notes of burnt toast, coffee beans and berry-like fruitiness. Not incredibly aromatic.

T - Mild fruity esters and weak roasted barley flavor up front. A twinge of lactic sourness comes in toward the middle with a stronger slightly acidic milk chocolate flavor. Finish is relatively flat with only a bit of hop bitterness and some malty sweetness.

M - If not for anything else, I love this beer because of the incredibly smoothness and drinkability (especially with the nitro cans/bottles). A little thin for my taste, but again, any thicker and it just wouldn't be Guinness. Ultra fine bubbles of carbonation dance off the tongue, but it doesn't get in the way of the already delicate flavor (I say "delicate" in reference to most American craft breweries' stouts). Finish is silky smooth with a hint of stickiness.

Appearance - dark with 2 finger tan head. Nice appearnance

Smell - slight sweetness and maltiness otherwise not much here.

Taste - A good easy drinking stout with some sweetness and roasted malt present. Not sensing a dry stout here at all.

Mouthfeel - full bodied for such a low ABV stout. I've had other stouts much more watery. This one is better.

Overall - A nice flavorful Stout that is much more palletable for beginner stout drinkers than the "Extra" which is more bitter and hoppy.

500ml can with nitro widget, poured into Guinness Toucan pint glass.

Appearance: This is the beer's high point for me, wonderful cascading effect that turns the beer from a murky brown to a pith black. Thick creamy 1.5 finger head forms on top, and is off white in colour.

Aroma: Not bad, but nothing to set it apart from other beers in the style. Coffee is there, as is the hint of fruit that puts me in mind of raisins or sultanas.

Taste: Coffee is present, and there's certainly a sweet note in the finish, but it's muted. I found myself waiting for a kick of flavours or a complexity that in the end just wasn't there.

Mouthfeel: Smooth and easy to drink in one way - you could down a few of these in a night quite easily - but in another way, quite watery. This itself may have taken form the taste of the beer.

Overall: Guinness brew fantastic stout in Guinness Extra Stout and Guinness Foreign Extra Stout, yet this particular brew was unstimulating and not at all exciting for me. Its presentation and drinkability are probably what keeps this stuff flowing in the bars, but for a great tasting Irish Stout I would certainly recommend trying one of their other brews above. Otherwise, Beamish and Murphy's are both popular brands to find on tap and either would appeal to me more.

Nitro 15oz Can, Leftover from St Patricks Day.

A: Just off black, like Cocacola, has a redish hue. Thin creamy head from Nitro. A medium khaki beige head. Leaves a thick Wall of lace. Head lasts well. Has that cool cascading bubble thing when you pour it too.

S: Some milky, malty, some roasted barley. Weak in strength.

T: Hints of coffee and milk chocolate initially. Some sweet malts. Has a bitter english tea like finish. Has a real dairy presence to taste. Fairly 1 dimensional.

M: Has that kinda funk nitro soft, no carbonation fake richness. I prefer beer with some carbonation, if not I would make a white russian.

O: I like it better on draft. For a mass produced beer its a great change of pace. Remarkable consitent and apperance is pretty awesome. Good beer to use to get macro drinkers to change it up. Ill have some every St Pattys. Great + A Smitwicks for a Black n Tan, or make 2 carbombs for yourself and a buddy.

I had this stout at a local Irish pub in my hometown..
Served with a traditional 'shamrock' shape in the rich, creamy head...
This beer has some coffee notes, hops, roasted malts, light grain and dark chocolate on the nose.

Long lasting lacing!!

The blends are on the front, yet subtle in taste. Its a creamy, malty-roasted bitterness that's slightly dry.

This pairs well with beef dishes & stews. It isn't my favorite stout, but it is a decent drink.

Supposed to drink from the can but served in pint glass to check appearance.

A - Dark brown with some light through edges, 2 finger tan head with good retention and moderate lacing, night tan bubble form head.

S - Weak roasted barley..

T - Watery, milky roasted barley, Pretty pathetic.

M - Light body, moderate carbonation. A little creamy and watery.

O - Horrible, takes any redeeming qualities of the Guinness brand and made it watery.
