Groninger Pils from 5L growler/mini-keg 4.5%abv. This was purchased direct from the Groninger brewery in Hamburg.

I had this beer served from 3 different dispensing types, draft, 10 liter oak cask, and 5 liter growler/can. They were all different so I have included all here as seperate reviews.

A Red, big fluffy head. 3.5

S Old and oxidized, a little surprising from a minikeg and significantl different from the Cask ale already reviewed. 2

T This beer didn't taste anything like the cask conditioned version. It was more grainy and had an oxidized flavor. No yeasty flavor, but also no significant malt flavor. 2.5

M Thin, but typical of the style. 3.5

D This was not the best dispensing type for this beer. The cask was by far the best dispensing style for this beer and the draft was second best. The 5L can is not the way to have this beer. 2.5

Another gift from the sister's trip to Germany. Poured a rich dark golden hue into a pilsner glass, with one finger of offwhite head, and good lacing. Crips Noble scent, with honey and biscuit. Rich honey and maltiness, with crisp herbal notes and a dry bitter finish. Honey aftertaste was very pleasant. Light, crisply carbonated feel, aided by the head retention. Excellent session pilsener.

This pils came to our table looking amber in color, which is not my expectation of this style, but it looked great all the same. The stuff looked like it was dying to be consumed, so I did the only right thing...

The smell is pretty bland, not a whole lot to report here, other than maybe a little bit of soggy grains. Nondescript, but certainly nothing offensive either, so this will just get the old so-so 3-rating.

Flavor-wise it could not have been more refreshing. Fruity hops are eclipsed slightly by gentle, bready malt, caramel popping up too, with a long-lasting finish that edges into the sour side of citrus, although it remains superbly balanced between malt & hops.

Mouthfeel is smooth as hell, gentle, soft, velvety. Cask-like, even, in its silkiness.

Wowza, I could have had many more of these if we had not been lacking in sleep from a long flight overseas. A must-try if you ever get to this place and want to try an ultra-fresh example of an authentic German pils.

500 ml bottle in Hamburg

Deep golden colour with thin, but quite solid head, good lacing. Aroma is malty with lots of fruit, mostly citrus, some yeast can be felt. Taste is very malty, sweet with hints of caramel and honey. The beer feels smooth with low carbonation.

Although the beer is very nice, it does not seem like Pilsener at all...I would say it is a nice Vienna. If Pilsener, where are the hops?

The colour is amber, the foam quite good, white in colour.
The smell is malty and sweet, with notes of caramel (in spite of what it declares in the name, it is not a pils...).
It is very sweet in the mouth, with notes of honey, too. The body is pratically null. A little too frizzy.
In the aftertaste some bitter, lightly grassy. Maybe some pepper notes?
