Probably the best place in Spearfish/Belle Fourche to find a good beer and even better food, Sanford's Grub & Pub is a proverbial oasis in a desert of macro-dominated eateries. Selection isn't the best, but I was happy to find some Odell 5 Barrel Pale Ale and 90 Schilling on-tap. My friend ordered a Big Sky Scapegoat Pale Ale. Around 12 other taps, although 3/4 of those were macros. The taps seemed clean enough, but I wonder the frequency with which the non-macro beers get rotated. The bottle list had probably 30 offerings, but again, 3/4 were macro beers.
The atmosphere is quirky, with tons of musical paraphernalia dotting the ceiling and walls (but not in a cheesy, TGI-Fridays kind of way). The bar/billiards area off to the right has literally hundreds of shoes nailed to the ceiling.
The service could use some work at times, as our group sat without drinks/water for over five minutes. Ten more minutes to take our order, beer refills took another five, and the meals took about 35-40 minutes to arrive after ordering. Still, the food is absolutely delicious for "pub grub". Huge, and I MEAN HUGE burgers with lots of variations that all looked equally as delicious as the one I ordered: The Cardiac Arrest. Burger topped with fried pickles, onion rings, pepper jack cheese, bacon, and spicy mayo. After a twelve hour drive (and a fourteen hour drive the previous day), this was heaven on a plate. The other members of our party were equally as pleased with their food.
Bottom line: If you're in the Spearfish area, give Sanford's a try.
