great place to go and get a brew. dark bar, occasional music and interesting patrons. selection is ever changing and seasonal by design. solid number of tappers and bomber selection. prices can be a bit high depending on what you're looking for. too bad this place doesn't serve food otherwise i'd be here much more often.

This is the place to go for beer in Kane county. It is the perfect atmosphere for beer. Knowledgeable staff, live music, and great beers. I love this place. There are a lot of bars trying to go to the craft seen but don't get it. They get it here. Beers are priced more then fair. Usually have rare drafts from great breweries like Lagunitas, Floyds, Founders, etc... If you are looking for a fun night with beer involved this is the place to be. Some times it can get a hard to get a beer because it is so busy, but that is a good thing. I don't like sitting in a dead bar. And the bartenders go 100%. So it is never out of control.

House Pub was a legit spot in downtown St. Charles, much of which seemed to be upscale or geared to an older crowd. We were greeted with blasting alt-metal on the house system (set up for live bands) and wafting smells of popcorn. The bar was right around the corner from the door, and it was surfaced with eclectic craft beer labels and the occasional paper currency. High ceilings, exposed brick walls, a stage in one corner, and a stairway to an elevated seating area in the back with a Big Buck Hunter game. Missed the hidden lounge area this time.
Behind the bar were over a dozen taps, many seasonals, high gravity, and a few gems. Notably DFH 90 and Burton Baton, Founders Centennial/Old Curmudgeon/Imperial Stout, Metro Arc Welder Dunkel Rye, FW Double Jack, LH Milk Stout and Sawtooth on nitro, Victory Golden Monkey, Mort Subite Lambic, Stone Sublimely Self Righteous, Bells, FFF, and more. A wall sized chalkboard behind the bar broke out all the bottled beers by style, which was nice. The swill was even in two categories, "schwag" and "skunk".
Service was good, and the bartender recommended a few local eateries, as they don't serve food here. I wish we'd skipped the Office up the street and hit Schnitzel Platz instead...

A- This place is somewhat dimly lit which i find to be quite enjoyable. There is no loud obnoxiousness to this place at all which makes it ideal for trying and enjoying craft beers. It is also quite easy to review beers either on paper or from my phone because of the chill atmosphere. Live music is often played here which makes for a comfortable groovy place.
Q- This place isn't dirty in the slightest and has quality products and style. The inside is covered in all sorts of craft bumper stickers showing off the pub's offerings.
S- Unless there is some live music going on, this place isn't too crowded which makes getting craft quick and easy. That's what I'm talkin' bout.
Selection- The House Pub offers a wide variety that is pleasantly placed on a wall sized chalk board behind the bar. The selections are categorized by style which is awesome. Many styles are available and you can order draft, 12oz bottles, cans, or 22oz bombers. Types range from as awesome as Goose Island Bourbon County Stout, to Well's Banana Bread Ale. All sorts of stuff here.
Food- It's a bummer that this place doesn't serve food!
Value- Pretty affordable considering they offer certain specials each day. I go on Sundays usually because of the 3 dollar drafts. This currently includes, but is not limited to Founder's Porter, GD Hibernation Ale, Allagash White, and a few others. On Tuesdays, it's 3 dollar cans or as I call it "Modus Tuesday". Love it

Atmosphere: A smallish bar area on the main floor, somewhat sparsely decorated and generic looking, aside from the giant chalkboard scrawled across with ~60 (2011/09 update - well over 100 beers now) or so available beers. Go up a half flight of stairs, and there's another generic looking open room and a Golden Tee. Meh.
However, go up another flight of stairs, and it's a whole 'nother world. Nice, plush leather couches and dark wood dominate the largest space The House Pub has to offer. With another bar in this area (although with a less impressive beer selection), quieter music, a fireplace and soft ambient lighting, this is my kind of place. Very cool.
Quality: The place was clean & offered great beers. High quality in my book.
Service: The bartenders knew their beers, and were quick to hand out recommendations/samples. Very attentive when needing a refill, as well. High marks.
Selection: The best in the Fox Valley area (and perhaps further), hands down. At least 60 beers (2011/09 update - well over 100 beers now), and aside from a handful of macros (listed under "Schwag" on their chalkboard), all were top notch craft brews. There is a definite emphasis on American craft here, and my one gripe would be to include a few more European brews. They had 0 weissbiers available (2011/09 update -a few weissbiers on the board now). But overall, very good selection.
Value: Typical prices, but Thursdays are the day to go- jazz upstairs, and $3 you call its ((2011/09 update - no longer $3 you cal its), which includes any beer $6 or under.

This is probably my favorite place in the Western Suburbs. It has a great selection of beers and all are very reasonably priced. While I was there I had three beers on tap and one bottled beer.
The atmosphere was good, it had an old bar feel with a little new bar flavor. There was the main area, with the bar, some seats and a large open area for where the band set up. There was a half way floor with Golden Tee 2010 and a fireplace. Upstairs was a small room and the bathrooms.
The quality was very good overall. The place looks newly renovated or at least very clean. Everything seemed new.
Service was very good, our main bartender was one of the owners and was very nice the whole night. Later in the night more people came to help and they all seemed nice as well. He got me my drinks quickly and made some recommendations.
The selection was very good compared to the surrounding areas. Where others embraced domestic beers, this establishment embraced the craft brewer. There was a large assortment that seemed to rotate fairly often. Everything from Miller Light to Three Floyds Dreadnaught.
There was no food, only a popcorn machine which was free.
Value, most of the beers on tap were $5 and some were $3 on special. Lagunitas IPA was one that I had. They had bottles from $3.50 to over $10, many of the Floyds.
Overall this was a very surprising and great bar. A live band really set the mood and the workers brought a welcome feeling. I would highly recommend visiting this bar. Especially with owners who are pushing to get beer that is rarely seen around this area.
