2007 nip bottle courtesy of Matt. I have been saving this for the right moment and opening night of the NFL and the eve of my first full solo day as a SAHD seem to be just that moment. Thanks Matt for the opportunity!

Into a champagne flute pours a deep and slightly murky ruby red with shades of dark purple. Nary a bubble is seen when backlit and no indication of head shows upon the surface.

Huge seedy jammy raspberries on the nose. Hints of blueberries and blackberries as well. Medley of sticky fruits melds with rich melted milk chocolate and brown sugar. The immediate whiff of alchol that erupted from the bottle upon opening seems to have abated after sitting a few minutes. In fact, there's little indication of the immensity of this beer.

Raspberry is sweet and tart up front and syrupy. As soon as it hits the middle of the tongue, the massive tootsie roll wall wraps around the fruit and carries it like a wave to the finish. Chocolate and an odd, slightly rotten food taste show on the finish.

Carbonation is, eh, low. Body is very syrupy.

I enjoyed this less as I got deeper into the bottle. Not so much for the sweetness, but for the fairly gross off flavor that pops out at the finish. While unique and interesting, I'm not sure I would go out of my way for this given what it might take to land it. I'd recommend splitting your bottle and hoping that this beer hasn't somehow taken a downturn after five years. An interesting try, but likely not worth the effort.

2007 nip bottle

Pours murky red/brown with some sediment. No head or lacing.

Smells like dessert. Lots of raspberry puree along with a hefty dose of caramel.

Holy hell this is sweet. Lots of intense raspberry flavor with a strong caramel presence. Not a ton of complexity in this.

Lightly carbonated, but it is present unlike most other Kuhnhenn beers and for this style and sweetness, it's not off. Very thick and syrupy.

Eh perfect serving size for this as it is way too sweet to drink large quantities of. Kind of a weird beer to my palate. Not very complex and just sort of average.

2007 vintage poured into a Mikkeller wine glass

A - Dark, reddish brown with no head and slight carbonation. Reminds me of a darker sherry. Definitely looks more like a dessert wine than a beer

S - Raspberry liqueur, chocolate covered raspberries, and raspberry jam lead in the nose. Has a big, jammy scent of fresh raspberry that takes over. It even smells thick! The raspberries are definitely of the sweeter variety and not tart at all

T - Full of raspberry flavors with a slight hint of chocolate. It actually is a bit tart at first which I don't get in the nose. Definitely reminds me of biting into a juicy, fresh raspberry. It has hints of caramel and raspberry jam that give it a slight sweeter taste near the finish. Definitely one of the best raspberry and fruit beers out there

MF - Thick and viscous body that is nice and sticky. It has very light carbonation; just enough to cut through the beer and prevent it from being too thick.

O - This beer is one of the reasons why Kuhnheen is well loved. It has great raspberry flavor, a nice mouthfeel, and is a unique beer. I'm pleasantly surprised by how well this has held up as I don't notice any signs of oxidation. This is a beer that would go great with a chocolate dessert such as rich truffles or chocolate cake.

6.3oz

2007 Vintage
Thanks HUGELY to Schmoopsbeer

App- The color of blood mixed with caramel and some reds and gold. No bubbles at all. No head, no cling. Very cordial like.

Smell- A sweet after dinner drink. Chocolate and Raspberries with creamy caramel and a bit of boozy sweetness. Just again cordial like.

Taste- Such an explosion of what a beer can be. Sweet with boozy fruits and liquid chocolate. Booze is hidden but still shows itself nicely. For an older bottle holding nicely.

Mouth- A lighter medium with a low carbed beer with a ton of Raspberry & Chocolate flavors. A littlw sweet with some booze.

Drink- Brian and I may talk a ton of shit but I cant thank him enough. Great beer. Can see why so hard to find.

REVIEW #1000! This has been a want of mine since the beginning. Many thanks to Exiled for a patient trade.

2007 vintage, 6.3oz bottle.

A: Pours a very deep mahogany color with a faint light brown head that quickly fizzed away into a thin collar. No lace.
S: I get huge notes of sweet raspberry preserves that remind me of doughnut filling. Light chocolate, glazed dough (i.e. pastry), and sweet caramel come through in the background.
T: Raspberries are still very prominent and actually fairly tart but not mouth puckering. Chocolate flavors are similar to cake or a tootsie rolls. The fruit is rather fresh and “real” tasting as opposed to a syrup or concentrate. I get complex notes of caramel, molasses and tannic red berry seeds in the finish, with hint of brown sugar and tobacco in the aftertaste. This beer is sweet all around, but not cloying, and the tartness of the fruit mixed with the drying tannins balance it out very well. Flavors of sweet raspberry jam linger long after the swallow, and my lips taste like caramel and tootsie rolls. Flavors open up and more nuisances come through as the beer reaches room temp, and I get some spicy woody and leathery notes. This beer is just phenomenal.
M: This beer is thick bodied with a syrupy and heavy mouthfeel. The double digit alcohol is hidden extremely well beneath the sweetness, but there is a slight warming sensation with each swallow. Carbonation is low but tingly and almost prickly, but never sharp. This is a sipper of a beer, and drinks well.
O: Masterfully done. For such a sweet dessert beer I could actually drink this quite often. It’s too bad this little guy is so hard to come by, or that the bottle format is so small. Well worth seeking out if you are a fan of fruit or eisbocks. Thanks again for the awesome trade, Exiled!

2004 bottle shared with friends the night before DLD!

Deep, dark red color in my glass. Strong raspberry aroma also smells bready & malty. Reminds me of those Whoppers malted milk balls. Yeah, definitely Whoppers. Awesome.

Aged bramble taste with mild fruity sweetness before chocolate and boozy caramel flavors interject. Tons of malt; full-bodied. Alcohol is more prevalent than in other Kuhnhenn brews but still balances nicely.

Been looking forward to cracking this for awhile, and KRE didn't disappoint. Very tasty; wish I could drink this more often.

Big thanks to Jack for this awesome "extra". 2007 bottle.

A - mostly still but an aggressive swirl produced a few bubbles. Deep red, looks like sangria.

S - raspberries, smells like candy.

T - initially a big blast of tart raspberries. Caramel and chocolate follow.

M - thin to medium. Not terribly smooth. Can taste some alcohol in the finish.

Really good. Very glad to have tried it. Would like to try this fresh.

2007 bottle.

Pours a dark murky ruby with a really tiny tan head that dissipates immediately. Lots of alcohol lacing on the glass if I quaft then beer. Lots of nice yeast floaties despite a careful pour.

Aromas begin with a lot of raspberries, actually raspberry tootsie rolls, crazy. There is a sweet malt base with a little bit of extra chocolate, maple, vanilla and hints of earthiness. Quite one dimentional, but really intense. Alcohol emerges as it warms.

The tastes begin just like the aroma, it really reminded me of a raspberry tootsie roll filled with a bit of alcohol. The flavors underneath were quite nice, with slight hints of brown sugar/molasses, a bit of maple and maybe some vanilla.

The mouthfeel is medium to heavy bodied with only a bit of carbonation. Finish is sweet but surprisingly not cloying, despite e lack of carbonation and the big ABV.

Overall this beer was very rich in flavor, but a little one dimentional. It was great to try and sip for a while, but the small amount was enough for me. A very interesting brew that is definitely well worth trying, but I don't NEED to have it again. A must for fans of any raspberry beers and beer geeks in general.
