We pop a bottle of 2011 stock, pouring into our oversized snifters. It shows a hazy chestnut brown coloring, with baby flecks of sediment found throughout. Carbonation appears to be nonexistent, no head is produced, and what bubbles there are rise slowly in this syrupy brew. The nose gives frank honey and maple syrup sweetness, dense caramel, brown, and coffee malt roast and smoke, rummy booziness, dank dog fur, black cherries and fig pulp, apple and mango fruitness, buttercream cake frosting, and satisfying buttery diacetyls. The flavoring, once you get past the harsh boozy dryness of feel, gives notes of dried mango and fig skins, lime rind and seed, melty caramel and toffee sweetness, brown and caramel malts, sea salt, soy sauce, gravel, brandy-soaked raisins, ceramic tile, and silver. In addition to the boozy dryness, the mouth is fully coated with sugary syrupy, but this gives way to bittering cloy after too long. The abv is massive, and the beer sips accordingly, taking forever to disappear.

Overall, this beer is wildly rich and decadent. The nose alone could cause diabetes. With warmth, the booze does come out in droves to meet the horrible sweetness, giving a semblance of a balance to the tasting. As far as a braggot goes, this tastes more mead than beer, with a strong showing of the raisins, figs, and fruity undertones held within, rather than with much depth of grain or bitterness of hops. This beer is one quick step away from being an amazing barrel aged beer, as it has enough intrinsic diacetyls and buttery warmth to carry it. That might make it more approachable and acceptable by many professional whale hunters, but alternatively could push it even further into uncharted, extreme territories.

Served in a Kuhnhenn's snifter

A - It is a murky tea color. I poured aggressively, so the yeast went in the glass, yet the pour yielded no head. There is a fine line of beige bubbles around the edge of the glass.

S - The first thing I thought of when I took a whiff was cherry Chap Stick®. As it warms, I start to get some sweet, boozy malt. It reminds me of a barleywine.

T - It is sweet. I get some fig, molasses, and honey. Once again it reminds me of an English barleywine. I get some alcohol on the finish.

M - Medium and flat from lack of carbonation.

O - It's a sipper. It is better at room temperature. It just reminds me a lot of an English barleywine. It has warming effects. I like it.
