TEMP: Poured at approx 42 degrees, warmed to room temp
VINTAGE: 2007 (12.5%abv)
This pours up a deep, yet vibrant, ruby/garnet color with some dark amber highlights. A very thin film of tan/beige foam forms the head, which never really leaves. It's small enough to hang around and not have to worry about diminishing, but at this abv level, I wouldn't expect much more of a head than this. The lacing is filled with tiny little spots which are sticky enough to fight against the oily-ness that coats the sides of the glass and drags them back down to the liquid surface.
This nose is deep, rich, and very complex. Loads of maple and dark fruit notes. Good hints of vanilla. Red grapes and a slight earthy/mustiness. Hints of black currants and a slight trace of cotton candy sweetness. Candied apple notes. Lots of caramel richness and sweet notes of brown sugar. Light hints of wood notes. Earthiness of dark molasses. As expected, it has an almost port like quality to it, overall.
An amazing nose, even in the realm of Old Ales, where noses are commonly amazing.
Initial taste is a malted milk bar, dipped in maple syrup. The earthiness comes forward to balance out the sweetness, which is still here, but somewhat muted. Still lots of dark fruit notes, along with some maraschino cherries and ranier cherries on the back end. Minor notes of green vegetables touch the mid-palate. Very nice presence of salted caramels. Lots of wood presence. Minor earthy hop notes. Lots of dates and figs, along with some light notes ohfmolasses and tobacco.
Overall, this is very rich, deep and complex. As far as old ales go, this is absolutely one of my top faves.
Very much a full-bodied brew, with a slightly oily feel to it. Low carbonation level, which works very well for it. Very smooth and a tiny touch of creaminess. Almost silky.
This is extremely drinkable. Very smooth and delicious. Just be careful of that high abv. You don't taste it, but you will certainly feel it after just a little bit of time goes by.

Huge thanks to RocPorterFanatic for this brew.
A: Very dark brown in color, slightly hazy, and a quaint tan head on the top.
S: Intense malt, and a good amount of sweetness. Molasses, caramel, brown sugar and perhaps a hint of dark chocolate or licorice.
T: Sweet, with brown sugar, caramel, and dark fruits. There is a hint of bread, as well as an almost orange zest like flavor in the finish, you can't taste the alcohol as much as you can feel it. Very nice.
M: Medium heavy, carbonation is low, and there is a stickiness to it, that I think works in the finish. If anything it feels slightly lighter than I would have thought.
O: Overall a hell of a malt bomb to round out your day with. Delicious, smooth, and dangerous.
