Bottle split two ways thanks to ahalloin.

Mahogany hue with a very substantial head and plenty of lace. Aromas of sweet tobacco, alcohol, rich malts, raisins. This beer has great complexity. My initial thoughts upon my first sip were that this instantly reminds me of a great English barleywine, particularly J.W. Lees. Secondly, this beer tastes much older than it is. I really thought the alcohol, while certainly not hidden, did not overpower the beer or present any undesirable harshness on the palate. There is a long, lingering aftertaste consisting of sweet caramels, toffee. Warming alcohol in the finish. Great beer. Probably best in small quantities.

2009 vintage poured into my CBS snifter. It poured a murky dark brown color with just some faint traces of a head clinging to the edges of the glass.

The aroma has a lot of dark fruits to it with some prominent notes of raisin and fig coming through as well as a touch of cherry. A little sweeter, caramel malt flavor is there along with some alcohol.

The taste shows more of a sweeter component to the dark fruits with the cherry and caramel assuming the lead role. A little of the raisin and fig like flavor that was prominent in the aroma comes through in the finish. I get a bit of chocolate to it as well. The alcohol is a little better hidden in the taste as well.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied for the style with carbonation being moderate. Overall, it's a very good beer with some really nice, bold flavors to it. It's little boozy and sweet at times, which prevents it from being truly great though in my opinion. Overall A very solid beer to sip on this evening though.

03/12/09- Received via trade with former BA member Jetsbeer.

Presentation- 2005 Vintage, bottled in February. Best by 2011. 12oz bottle poured into my Old Stock Ale glass.

Appearance- Deep cherry, mahagoney, burnt caramel color. Slight bubbly head on a fairly hard pour. Spotty and watery-like lace left behind. Not uncommon per style.

Smell- Very pungent and wonderful nose. Burnt and heavy caramel malt, sugary cherry notes, minor alcohol. Smells a bit like alcoholic brownies.

Taste- Thought this was much higher of an abv. Lots of flavor for it's strength. Strong toasted and roasted caramel malted flavor. Minor chocolate notes added with some raisin, date and cherry flavors. Fairly bready and the sweetness isn't too strong.

Mouthfeel- Very smooth and silky. Not really creamy. Mildly thick. Lower carbonation, but sharp at times. Nice dark fruity aftertaste with a light sugary coating.

Drinkability- Finally got around to drinking this after aquiring this in '05. Great and easy drinking Old Ale. Score for Kuhnhenn. Have my bottle of Raspberry Eisbock from '05 or earlier tomorrow night.

The beer pours an amber-red color with a tan head. The aroma is brown sugar with some alcohol, molasses, maple and oak. The flavor is just as complex with cherries, brown sugar, alcohol, toffee and caramel. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. A very complex beer that I really enjoyed.

A real nice orange glowing amber out the bottle, hits with a muted brown and faint orange/ruby body. There is nearly no head on this beer, barely even a collar makes it through of faint tan color. I'd score this average but the body color is quite nice I must admit.

Interesting nose. Malty richness with a wooden feel to it. Molasses turned down in a sort of chewy sense. Strangely feels a little spicy and salty. Interesting, this salt and sweet molasess character melds nicely I like it. There's a hint of heat.

Rich tasting with an almost Flanders cherry character. Finishes with a faint black pepper and spice and controlled quick heat, but not boozy. Malty rich with a very light body nearly wet, and splintery character. Hints at Scotch Ale style smoke also.

What an interesting brew. As I sip on this, I am craving BBQ pork. Very enjoyable, even though some factors don't hit the A mark. Would love to try the barrel aged version.

12 oz. bottle poured into a snifter. 2010 vintage.

Appearance - Deep brown with a surprising head. Wispy surface with a thin collar. Leggy on the swirl.

Smell - Mmm. A bit of oxidation, some wet sock aroma, delicious. Deep earthy caramel aroma.

Taste - Nutty malt flavor, earthy hops. Slightly less impressive than the smell. No real sweetness. Bitter finish. No booze.

Mouthfeel - No alcohol or sweetness. It's a sipper, but it's not really difficult to drink. Medium carbonation.

Overall - Nowhere near as good as the barrel aged version, but still an impressive beer.

Bottled August 2004; Sampled February 2008
A vigorous pour produces a half-finger thick, frothy, large bubbled head that is a dark tan, lightly amber tinged color. The beer is a burnt amber color and shows brilliantly clear, though chunky, deep ruby hue when held up to the light. Rich concentrated aromatics of oxidized malt extract, sherry, buttery toffee, caramelized berry notes, chewy grain and toasted brown sugar encrusted whole grain bread. A touch of warming alcohol combines with the fruit notes to provide some soft notes reminiscent of a refined brandy. As the beer aerates a bit it becomes quite a bit more fruit focused, the berry notes become much more noticeable as the aged malt notes reminiscent of Sherry meld into the fruit character.

Sweet up front, but this seems to dry out fairly quickly. The beer is quite light bodied for its strength, but still has a fullness to it; along with the ample alcohol, the body easily makes this a sipping brew. Chewy, caramelized malt notes combine with aged Sherry flavors, fruity raisin notes and browned, whole grain bread-like notes. The hop merely play a supporting role here, but do provide some flavor to this brew; soft herbal notes are found up front and pick up some steam with a herbal, slightly astringent, bitter note by the time we get to the long, lingering finish. Actually because this beer is not overly sweet, the hop character that is here provides a nicely balanced note between hop and malt. The alcohol, while not aggressive, is most certainly here and provides a warming character that sort of radiates down my throat. The finish has a bit of dark grain character to it as well; at times hints of chocolate and perhaps a hint of roast grain becomes noticeable.

Tasty, contemplative and interesting, I have a feeling this is close to peaking. When younger I think it would have been too sweet for my tastes, but the oxidation has started to temper this brew & the still noticeable hop character adds a nice balance to the rich, layered malt character. Not bad, but something seems to keep this from being great; perhaps it is a lack of a certain rich, complexity.

Had a small glass at the Stag's Head. I had a couple other nice beers at the Stag, but man this one stood out. It wasn't overly thick and there's was no knock of alcohol. The flavor was a rich mix of dates, raisins, caramel, and cocoa. There were mild hints of toffee, cola, and grapefruit hops to round this out, making for a fantastic dessert beer.

Pours a dark brown, with a tan head - transient, and falls to a ring. Big legs on this one. Nose has dried dark fruits, sweet caramel notes, and a hint of metal. Taste reflects this without the metal note (which diminished with warmth), more dried dark fruits - berries and currants, booze, caramel and something I kept percieving as oak, although I'm confident this isn't oak aged. Mouthfeel was medium heavy, with a moderate sweetness that's restrained by some drier qualities throughout. Great drinkability, and doesn't even come close to feeling like the alcohol content advertised. Need to get my lips on the bourbon barreled version.

Thanks very much to WeisGuy for the chance to try this beer. Pours a dark brown, close to black with a thin head that fades to a very thin ring. Smells of licorice and blackstrap molasses, slightly treacly, and herbal, but not sweet. The taste starts with more of that European style licorice flavor- not sweet, but more earthy and bitter, in fact a deeply herbal bitterness is present in this beer, like Fernet Branca. To me, that is delicious, but be prepared for the amaro like bitterness. More blackstrap on the finish. Complex and delicious. Low carbonation and a tiny bit sticky in the mouthfeel, but still reasonable. Very interesting, I like this a lot, but I wouldn't call this a particularly balanced beer.

2008 vintage in a snifter. Bottle received in a trade with FlanderNed, thanks Steve! The beer pours turbid deep crimson brown with a voluminous light tan head, excellent retention, and scattered lacing.

The aroma is rich and malty, with notes of dried dates and figs, sherry oxidation, treacle, mellow alcohol, caramel, and toffee. Amazing aroma.

The flavor is luscious toffee. It's incredibly rich and expressive, with notes of dried dates, dried figs, treacle, toffee, caramel, light sherry oxidation, and alcohol. The finish is decadent and boozy.

The beer is full bodied with a thick and chewy mouthfeel. This is a rich, complex, and potent malt sipper. Highly recommended, though I'd suggest you share the bottle.

2012 Vintage tasted 17/6/13 (13.5%)

Let us assume that Kuhnhenn Fourth Dementia is indeed the product of some alternative universe, one where flatness, sludgy murkiness and muddy brown colouring are considered aesthetic qualities for a beer to have. In the eyes of that world it would be a model beer... but in this one it looks like something you'd unclog from your bathroom sink.

Just smelling 4D you'd want to have some tissue on hand in case it sticks to and hangs off your nose; its aroma comes across incredibly resinous and viscous. It's as if the brewery covered tree bark in a hard caramel coating and smeared figs and bruised plums across it. The glass smells as though it's been glazed in some kind of anise seed wax.

Persistence in trying to pick out more and more from the aroma might result a headache - it's that intense - but sipping the beer is a sweet and sublime exercise in relaxation. Vanilla candle and caramel flavours really come to the fore along with all kinds of Christmas-cake dried fruits and spices. The musty oak barrel notes crumble into a chocolate and port-like finish.

High alcohol may give the beer sherry-like undertones but a near chewy maltiness provides enough body in the form of dark toffee and chocolate-covered wafers. A bleached-out, long-steeped English Breakfast bitterness mingles with figs, dates and plum pudding on the finish. The earthy, bittersweet profile is reminiscent of a strong chestnut honey.

4D doesn't have to be sipper but it's a wise to way to consume a beer that is both strong and complex; each mouthful reminds one of just how much can be derived from only a few measly ounces (bought with, it must be said, more than just a few measly dollars). Mind you the beer's high price tag is reflective of a rich beer, one that gives even more with bottle age.

Any Kuhnhenn in the cellar means life is good. Kuhnhenn beers - the barrel-aged offerings in particular - are objects against which to measure the rest of your life. Though they aren't cheap, these beers aren't about being well-heeled – they're about being well-off, in the sense that you have the fortunate circumstances to enjoy some of America's most rare and unique ales.

2011 Vintage poured in to Founders tulip.

A - Murky dark brown with a very small amount of light brown head.

S - A huge caramel malt sweetness up front accompanied by toffee, molasses and brown sugar. The ABV is very well hidden. Reminiscent of a barley wine.

T - A big sweetness up front with dark caramel, toffee, brown sugar and molasses flavours. The middle offers a bouquet of dark fruit, raising, dates and sticky candy-like flavours. The finish brings back the sweet toffee and caramel with just the right amount of warming alcohol present.

M - Full bodies, silky and smooth. Light carbonation. An exceptional mouth feel.

Appears a glowing dark brown with a 2 inch off white head that sticks around for a minute. Some spotty lacing is left behind.
Smell is of sweet malt, caramel, and a hint of pine mixed with fresh bready dough.
Taste is of smooth dough with caramel malts and raisins and a definite oakiness or pineness about it.
Mouthfeel is smooth with an alcohol bite that covers the entire palate of full flavors.
To me, the alcohol is evident but this is still not bad to take your time with after a hearty meal.

Finger licking good.

My first Kuhnhenn.

Poured into a chalice a slightly cloudy dark amber color, some carbonation, no head or lacing. The nose is of sweet/spicy malts, some hops, slight vanilla, and caramel. The taste is big of sweet malts, hops, and caramel. There's a nice oily/sweetness going on with first sip, then there's a slight dry/bitterness in the finish. Nice warming factor the whole way down. Medium body, nice rounded brew. Very drinkable, but watch out, LOL This is a very tasty Old Ale, hopefully I will get a chance to try out other Kuhnhenn brew's soon.

Many thanks to Dyan for sharing this beer with me, my first ever beer from Kuhnhenn Brewing.

The beer pours a dark brown color with very good head retention and lacing. The nose on this beer is huge, presenting brown sugar, butter, chocolate and leather. Mama mia, this beer smells great! Flavors on the palate replicate the nose, and I'm impressed by how incredibly rich tasting and intense the flavor profile is. Furthermore, despite considerable sweetness, this beer was not the least bit heavy, cloying or tiring on the palate. I get some slight woodiness on the finish, which only adds to the extremely long and smooth finish. Alcohol is noticeable, but is not intrusive in any way. Still, this is clearly a sipper, and one is all I can ever imagine having of this fine beer. Nevertheless, this is a very flavorful, very big, and very fine beer. Excellent stuff.

2007 vintage received a while back from DLucky.... I tried a bottle my bro brought over a couple of months back and it piqued my interest.. so... tonight is the night. Poured into my New Belgium snifter.

Aggressive pour lends only a short lived 3/4" head with a nice cap.. the brew is a beautiful deep brown with bright crimson highlites when held to a light... very pretty and a unique looking brew... nice lace as the liquid slowly drops.

Aroma is very complex... reminds me of an English BW and an older Tawny port.. fruity and leathery with a mild spicy hop background... raisins and lite figs ...

The flavor is huge and comes in waves... very thick malty presence ... with abundant dried fruit .... figs.. lite prune.. fairly sweet.. dry cigar wrapper.. again is reminiscent of an aged English BW... but very aged.. spicy and peppery.... a little bit of ETOH heat.. but actually adds to the overall presentation.. the body is thick and coating.. maybe a little sweet for my palate.. but I honestly think it should probably be cellared for a while longer.. maybe years... what do I know? The carbonation is alot more lively than expected... pouring this one, I did not expect as much.

This brew is a sleeper.. because the finish is sooo long... I am really liking it... now I just need to find a good connection for Kuhnhenn.

A: Poured a caramel color with a nice tan cap and some bubbles

S: Holy caramel, bourbon, figs, raisins and booze

T:Immediate caramel sweetness with some bourbon heat and a massive amount of residual sugar. Figs, riasins and tobacco are very prevelant in this beer, all the way through. Caramel, toffee and big sugar seem to be the key notes

M: Warm, sweet and boozey on the end. Medium to big body, well carbonated

O: Very nice but as sweet as this beer is a sure headache and sugar rush would follow on a single beer. Wow.

A- This beer pours a dark brown dense body with a faint amber hue to it. On top is a sticky light tan head that fades in the middle but last around the edges.

S- The smell of caramel malt has notes of darker roasted malt and cinnamon tree bark with a pine needle hop finish.

T- The rich caramel malt flavor is very full with a slight sweetness and a graham note that is almost inky in flavor. There is a faint cinnamon quality to the malt. This big malt flavor blends with the woody bitter notes of piney hops that has a faint mint quality to it. The caramel sweetness lingers just a bit blending with the alcohol nicely.

M- This beer has a medium-full mouthfeel with a very soft alcohol heat making my tongue beg for more. As the beer warms the alcohol increases pulling out the hop flavors and malt flavors at the finish.

D- This beer has a great bold flavor of malt with some interesting malt flavors to it and a nice hop support. The depth seems to unveil itself as the beer warms and this is a great example of this style. I would be interested to see what this beer taste like as it ages becuase the hops add so much to it fresh.

Pours a clear, amber color. 1/4 inch head of an off-white color. Decent retention and decent lacing. Smells of alcohol, sweet malt, and slight dark citrus. Fits the style of an Old Ale. Mouth feel is sharp and crisp with an average carbonation level. Tastes of strong alcohol, sweet malt, dark citrus, slight hop, slight vanilla, and slight tart malt. Overall, a good body, but the blend is off (too strong of alcohol).

This bottle was the 2008 vintage, 11.8%. It pours a medium bodied and somewhat murky cherried wood brown in color with red highlights and a beige lacing around the glass. It smells of sweet malts, some cherry, raisins, brown sugar, molasses, maple syrup, with some light oak. It's very sweet on the nose yet very aromatic. You can tell that it has aged well thusfar. The flavors too are on the sweet side. You get a lot of raisins, figs, dates, light oak/earthiness, with some vanilla as well. It's very complex and an interesting drink. It's kind of like sipping on a port. The sugar is holding me back from grading it higher. It drinks medium in body and is sticky on the palate. The flavors resonates for a few minutes after each sip. Overall this is a nice old ale, despite the grandiose amount of sugar. It's very, very complex and will make you think while you drink it. It's well worth your while.

Pours a dark chestnut brown color with ruby/mahogany edges and a half finger light beige head that immediately fades into a thin ring. Minimal spots of lacing left behind.

Sweet malt aroma with faint earthy hops and boozy heat. Lots of earthy oak/wood character balanced out by hints of caramel, rye and toffee. I'm also picking up some dark fruit, mostly raisin and plum and fig along with other dark berries. The nose is pretty complex with a good balance of barrel character, leathery malt and sweet notes.

Medium body and slightly syrupy with some soft carbonation and subtle spice up front. There's a slightly earthy, leathery character but this beer is bursting with sweet malt flavor. Hints of caramel, toffee, biscuit, hazelnut and rye which are countered at the end of the swallow by a boozy hot finish with a decent hop bite. There's a decent barrel presence with a good amount of oaky/wood flavor along with some more sweet booze. This beer is pretty complex but is very hot at this stage and the ABV is not very well masked. It's 13.5% and you can feel it in the finish. Definitely a sipper that should improve with time but right now it's still a bit rough.

Pours a rich chestnut brown; nearly clear, with very little head or lacing. Complex aroma is vinous, sweet, toasted marshmallows as mentioned on the label; toffee and caramel, raisins, booze, woody notes. Flavor equally complex but less sweet; there’s the trace of marshmallow and toffee from the nose but less prominent in the taste; oaky, slightly corky, vinous. Port and brandy flavors, some heat and warming as expected from the high ABV but not too much burn. Pleasant fusel alcohol presence. Low carbonation but not still; a little sticky, somewhat creamy. Medium body, could be a bit fuller. Finishes surprisingly dry. Tasty old ale; would love to see what the barrel aging brings to this very intriguing beer.

Poured into a DFH chalice, formed a 1/4" brown head above the clear burgundy brew. Head is quickly down to a swirl of bubbles, with lots of legs and fleeting small-bubbled lace.

Aroma is sweet, fruity, and alcoholic. Taste starts sweet, goes Robitussin cherry in the middle, hops and strong alcohol at the close. Mouthfeel is slickery, and drinkability is pretty limited, in my book. Too much over the top, not enough enjoyable brew this time around.

12oz bottle obtained via trade with CRJMellor. Thanks for the opportunity... Label notes brewdate of 2/16/05, best before 2011.

Poured into an imperial pint glass, formed 1/2" tan head over the cloudy reddish brown brew. Head lasts nicely, with average lacing. Aroma is grains, tart fruitiness, and alcohol. Flavor is sweet to start, with heavy dark fruitiness in the middle, which fades into an alcohol aftertaste. Mouthfeel and drinkability are okay, but this one just seems too fruity and tart for the style. More like cough syrup, unfortunately.

2012 Vintage.

I've had earlier (lighter) versions of this and never really cared for it. At the first Michigan Brewers Guild Winter Beer Fest I just thought it was harsh, same with other bottles.

This is better. It doesn't need to be 13.5%, but it is better.

A: Initial pour seems like it is almost still, very little carbonation. Deep, deep mahogany, a few tan bubbles surface and it shows a little leg.

S: Alcohol is apparent in the aroma, somewhat sherry-like. Plenty of raisins, figs, dates and hints of field berry.

T: Although it's stronger than early versions, it doesn't seem so. I thought they were plagued by tertiary/fusel alcohol, but not this one. Tons of dates, raisins, figs and dark caramel, hints of roasted nut and cocoa and some meaty melanoidins. Good bitterness, alcohol is certainly warming.

M: Mild carbonation really works, but I still find the residual sweetness a bit much.

O: I still think this is over-rated, but it is a good brew.
