Wow!! This is an unbelieveable beer. It begins by pouring a sludgy, brownish color. Has a small, and quickly dissipating tannish head. Overall the initial appearance is not as impressive as could be. However, other attributes more than make up for this shortcoming. Fourth Demetia has a deep and malty aroma. Hints of caramel and chocolate are followed by a slight hoppy undertone. It smells sweet and full. Very nice in the nose. The taste can be summed up by two words: sweetness galore. I can really distinguish the malt and caramel in this beer. A bit of an alcohol taste is present and hangs around afterward for a bit. But that doesn't bother me at all. Hops are also noticealbe. All and all this is a well balanced and nice taste. In the mouth this beer is full and biting. It is a very strong, heavy and formidable beer on the tongue. Overalll, K.F.D. is a sipper if there ever was one. It is boldly strong and extremely flavorful. This is a notable and deliciously substantial ale. A greet beer!!! (1,006 characters)

A- This beer pours a dark brown dense body with a faint amber hue to it. On top is a sticky light tan head that fades in the middle but last around the edges.

S- The smell of caramel malt has notes of darker roasted malt and cinnamon tree bark with a pine needle hop finish.

T- The rich caramel malt flavor is very full with a slight sweetness and a graham note that is almost inky in flavor. There is a faint cinnamon quality to the malt. This big malt flavor blends with the woody bitter notes of piney hops that has a faint mint quality to it. The caramel sweetness lingers just a bit blending with the alcohol nicely.

M- This beer has a medium-full mouthfeel with a very soft alcohol heat making my tongue beg for more. As the beer warms the alcohol increases pulling out the hop flavors and malt flavors at the finish.

D- This beer has a great bold flavor of malt with some interesting malt flavors to it and a nice hop support. The depth seems to unveil itself as the beer warms and this is a great example of this style. I would be interested to see what this beer taste like as it ages becuase the hops add so much to it fresh. (1,203 characters)

Thanks to Kels for picking me up a bottle of this while you were in Detroit to watch a big time wrestling pay per view.... >.>

This bottle was much better than the first that I had. Carbonation was much stronger and helped tie the flavors together. This also majorly helped the feel which made it much thicker and completely smooth. A large head formed and help for quite a bit and helped the aroma flood my nose. This beer could definitely be dangerous if you're not careful as it stupidly easy to drink.

12oz. brown bottle poured into a snifter.

A: Pours a very deep mahogany with nearly no visibility. Very little carbonation even after a rough pour. Basically no head or lacing.

S: Dark, sugary fruits soaked in alcohol. Raisins and cooked cherry's. Sweet malts, deeply cooked sugar and honey. Alcohol is very present but not stinging or abrassive, nicely mellowed.

T/M: Some weak signs of oxidation. Super sweet caramel malts with more of the thick honey. Dark plump raisins and cooked cherry's and plums. The carbonation is basically not there which is a little disappointing.

D: Great sipper and drinks relatively easy for an Old Ale. (1,258 characters)

Received in trade from brewdan. 2008 edition.

Pours a murky milk-chocolate brown/sienna, with a crackly head that brings to mind tiny bits of crisped rice, and also reminds of a Belgian stout for some reason. The head doesn't last long (what head on a 11.8% beer does?) but never truly disappears either. Fourth Dementia looks regal all the way through, and plenty of lace clings hard and thick to the glass.

Aroma offers black cherries, plump dark raisins, sherry, a little wood and hardly any of the alcohol, which is a plus. A hint of leather comes through with warming.

The flavor took me aback. I knew I loved it right away, but it seemed that with every little sip (and a couple bigger ones) it would give off many different impressions, almost too many to decipher. First I thought of wood and alcohol--almost whisky-like--then I got dark chocolate and molasses. Then vanilla sneaks in, and there's a burnt marshmallow element on the edges. Some deep dark fruit creeps up slowly, but only in a background role. And then I'm back around to the wood, while the impression of the alcohol has significantly diminished, letting the deeper flavors take hold yet providing enough warmth to give you that "comfort beer" kind of feeling (ie. it's like being under tons of covers with a lover on a frigid winter's night only, uh, different). Beguiling, complex, seductive and simply wonderful.

I found the texture to be (mostly) at odds with the personality of the flavors. It's airy and bubbly, a bit sharp and more carbonated than expected from such a beer. I loved its stickiness -- not too clingy, but it keeps the flavor lingering, and for that alone I'm happy enough with the mouthfeel.

A fantastic old ale with tons of depth and complexity. Its 11.8% comes in a very manageable 12-ounce bottle, which was a good call on Kuhnhenn's part. Even though this is my only bottle, I'll remember its personality for a long time. An exceptional and very, very special beer any way you look at it; one of the best I've had in recent memory. (2,040 characters)

12oz bottle from IAmJacksHopTongue (much apprecitaed!). 2013 bottling. Served in a Bruery snifter.

Pours an opaque chestnut with a minimal cap of pale head. Trace bubbles remain around the edges without leaving any lace to speak of.

Smells akin to a nice port. Dark fruit, caramel, toast and a faine wine-like alcohol note. Nice.

Taste follows the nose. Raisin, fig, caramel, burnt brown sugar, tawny port, toasted marshmallow, earthy vanilla and a little booze. A splendid ensemble of old ale flavors that goes down dangerously easily for it's 13.5% abv.

Body is medium heavy and syrupy with light carbonation. A pleasant port, caramel and toasted marshmallow finish.

This is an outstanding old ale. Such richness and complexity set it well above most other examples of the style that I've encountered. This is a beer worth hoarding to enjoy over many years. Very highly recommended. (894 characters)

Huge ups to ma main man treyrab diggity.

This beer looks amazing with it's bottle shape figure. Pours a decadent wooded dark brown. A huge light yellow creamy head really adds to the appetizing factor of this beer.

This. beer. smells. so. good. A heavily roasted hazlenut and caramel matched with vanilla alludes to this beers depth and complexity. As Trey pointed out, there is a nice funky element that was present in Kuhnhenn's Triple Bock. This beer is just as enjoyable in the taste. So smooth yet highly carbonated. The roasted flavors carry well and really take this beer to the next level. I'll file this beer under incredible beers that I will never get to try again... (682 characters)

Let me say first that this was noted on the bottle as being an Old Ale made in 2004. However, this strikes me as remarkably similar to some of their other beers -- its texture not unlike the raspberry eisbock and its flavor not unlike the bourbon barrel imperial stout. I wonder if this is an offshoot of the latter? The same recipe with slightly different treatment and then bottled as an old ale instead? Something similar? Perhaps I'm not recalling the other beer well enough, but for those familiar with their beers, this will definitely make you remember those others you've had before.

Smells like viscous sludge made of pureed fruit. Mild hints of coffee and chocolate covered raisins. You can tell immediately this will be incredibly good and quite flavorful.

And it is.

Sweet, sweet beer. Incredibly deep, potent caramel flavors with bourbon barrel characteristics. Soft, velvet feel. Quite oily. The alcohol is hidden quite well, though a flavor that strikes me as sweetned blackberry puree with confectioners sugar might simply be an offshoot of the alcohol flavor. Appearance - The beer was a murky brown color.

Smell - The nose was sticky sweet with malt impressions.

Taste - The initial impression was for sweet malts. Sweet and syrupy malt are prominent. Maraschino cherries, fruit cocktail, and a hint of baker 's chocolate were in the background. The aftertaste is dry like a green apple but maintains the sweetness.

Mouthfeel - With low carbonation, the impression is almost sticky.

2011 vintage poured into snifter. Pours a deep brown amber. No head or lacing but that's to be expected. Smell is fantastic!!! Dried fruit booze and malts. Taste is also just amazing!!!I can't even describe. Just get this fantastic beer. Absolutely amazing! (257 characters)

A huge thanks to Derek for sending me this beer some time ago. Finally got around to opening it last night. Shared with some deserving souls.

A: The pour is amber/leaning toward mahogany color with a minimal off-white head.

S: Lots of sweet caramel, toffee, brown sugar, dark fruits, honey, alcohol, and maple syrup. I'm sure that I missed something, but there are just so many aromas going on.

T: A similarly decadent array of flavors comes through as soon as this one hits your tongue. A mix of dark fruits, maple syrup, honey, toffee, caramel, and brown sugar. A touch of alcohol, but it's almost reminiscent of bourbon.

M: The body is full with a low carbonation and really smooth on the tongue.

D: I'm a big fan of Kuhnhenn and this beer is one of the reasons. An amazing beer and maybe the best Old Ale around. (821 characters)

First (and hopefully not last) visit to kuhnhenn. Served in a 12 oz tulip glass. THICK, dark brown, bordering on black with a rich, tan head that settled to a film and clung to the sides of the glass. Very intense aroma. dark chocolates, peat, soy sauce, nuts, also very estery, and a prevailent earthy smell. Offered a taste to my sister, says it tastes like dirt. Taste was of (once again) rich bitter chocolate, mixed dark fruits, nuts, and peat. Also a whiskey or bourbon-like quality. Had to sip this one. Mouthfeel was full bodied and slick. alcohol made its presence known quite well. This is what i have been missing all these years. A definite eye opener. Such a flavorful brew, very fine work from those at Kuhnhnenn. Far and away the most interesting and intensely flavored brew i have had to date. Delightful. (821 characters)

A: Pour is a crystal clear chestnut brown with a small light tannish white head

S: Aroma of heavy toffee, thick roasted malt, sweet barleywine / old ale aroma of marshmallow, caramelized sugars. Booze aroma.

T: Delicious light Toffee flavors , with heavy sugar Caramelization. The label says toasted marshmellow and is definitely accurate. There is definitely a booze presence in this and I am happy for it. This is an old ale and I expect that out of a good BW / OA ... The amazing thing about this Old ale is that it has not been barrel aged yet has a frightening ability to convince me that there are oak barrel flavors in here. Plenty of vanilla with the toasted marshmallow taste. Golden graham / graham cracker finish with a little dryness.

M: Light to medium for the style in mouthfeel with a light carbonation.

Split a 12 oz. bottle at Hopcat with fellow BA danielnovak3. Poured into a tulip. 2011 bottle.

A: Pours a very dark ruby with small light khaki head the subsides quickly.

S: Nice dark fruits, caramel, and a little leather. There is faint cherry sweetness in the background.

T: The flavors going on in the taste are incredible. Leather, caramel and tobacco blend together with figs and plums to really create some amazing flavor. Very little alcohol is present and there is no heat. There is a slight sweetness on the finish that really blends it all together.

M: Creamy and coatable. Between heavy and medium on the feel with a nice subtle carbonation. A dark fruit taste is left on the palate.

O: This is what an old ale should taste like. So well balanced and the all the flavors that came through on the taste were awesome. Now I must find the BB4D. (858 characters)

It pours a nice ruby-laced dark brown color with a small head that falls to nicely ring the top of the beer. Nice color. The nose is spicey alcohol-soaked raisins coated in brown sugar. The spicey alcohol really plays well in there. Smells really nice. The flavor is very nice and balanced. I get a deeper flavor than the nose suggested. Dark brown sugar and raisin, with just a puff of alcohol and spices. The alcohol is only slightly present to let you know that it is there. I'm a fan of how everything plays well with each other flavor. The feel is great, with a very thick, almost syrupy feel. It coats my mouth and throat as I swallow the beer. The carbonation is minimal. Drinkability is huge. I am very imressed with this brew. It is very smooth and easily drinking. A fine, fine beer. Seek it, drink it, love it. (847 characters)

Had this quite a few times at Kuhnhenn, but I finally decided to crack some of my 2011 bottles, and this review will be based off of that. Fourth Dementia pours soft, rich, and thick, almost like warm maple syrup out of the bottle. It's a very deep and dark mahogany, showing ruby highlights in front of the light. A small, khaki crown forms slowly upon pouring, showing decent retention for this high gravity brew. A quick swirl of the glass will easily conjure up larger froth if desired.

I could smell 4D long before I ever brought the glass to my face - pretty much as soon as I cracked the bottle open. It's a highly sweet malt bomb that is very reminiscent of a barleywine up front. Humongous caramel aromas, warm toffee, and a melted coating of brown sugar smeared from wall to wall. Rich dark fruits reside beneath this blanket of sugary goodness; plums, black cherries, dates - all candied and tangled in vibrant sweetness. I pick up very faint woody aromas, though I don't believe the original 4D ever touched a barrel. Wonder what this is from? Alcohol is present with a warming and smooth notice, similar to that of brandy or sherry. Warmer temperatures only reveal more nuances in this already complex labyrinth of aromas; more sticky toffee, light tobacco, graham crackers... This aroma is blowing my mind.

Smelling this beer does nothing but get me even more excited to finally bring it to my lips. Truth is, I usually sit there and wave it in front of my nose for minutes before I finally take a sip. Initially, 4D comes out swinging with a fruit combination, sweet and pure like a puree; cherries, raspberries, and ripe plums are leading the pack by far. Now imagine those fruits drizzled in rich caramel, and rolled in a vat of brown sugar, then dipped delicately in a brandy bath for a few hours. Sticky bouts of toffee are strong from start to finish along with lighter hints being given to honey and maybe even maple syrup. 4D is sending my entire sensory system into a frenzy and I'm loving every goddamn minute of it.

Again, warmer temperatures yield an even larger bouquet of flavors, so I recommend taking it slow; it probably took me a little over an hour to finish the 12 oz bottle and that's the best way to do it. The flavors intensify and grow to a ridiculous degree of power and refinement, as if they weren't incredible enough already. The aftertaste is full of that light oak flavor that I was getting in the aroma - again, kind of mind-boggling considering this wasn't aged in a barrel or anything. Long lasting, toasted brown sugar couples with graham crackers and leftover cherry and raspberry juices to give one last jolt of sweetness before the sip of 4D is gone forever. Despite the intensely high levels of sweetness, the beer elegantly avoids becoming cloying through delicate balance with the alcohol heat and a faint (almost unnoticeable) addition of earthy hop bitterness. Slightly sticky mouth feel, heavy and thick on the palate, low-medium carbonation.

Holy shitballs. This stuff is absolutely incredible. I know I'm probably one of the only people that thinks this, but I enjoy the regular 4D much more than the barrel-aged version. I don't believe that barrel-aging always makes things better, and here is a perfect example of that. Why? Bourbon barrel aging imparts a particular and dignified set of flavors; in my opinion, these flavors kind of mask what I love so much about 4D. Call it a barleywine or an old ale or whatever the hell you want - this beer is a perfect example of the capabilities of not only its style, but beer in general. Enjoy this beer and take a nap, then thank me later. (3,649 characters)

Had on tap at the Kuhnhenn brewpub. I'd been wanting to try this beer for some time, and it lived up to its hype.

It was presented in a tulip-style chalice, showcasing the dark aubrun red beer with a thick, wet, and sticky tan head. Very nice looking, and the aroma wasn't as strong or barley-winey as I feared. It was malty and a little muted. Still very nice. The taste was almost doppelbocky, with rich and sweet malt flavors battling for dominance over the alcohol (13.5% based on the menu description). The malt flavors came through really nicely, and there was just a hint of alcohol burn. The mouthfeel was just as good, thick and chewy, it felt like drinking a meal. Very very nice old ale. (699 characters)

A big thanks to muskiesman for sending this one over in a trade

A: Pours a somewhat viscous opaque very dark brown, almost black, with no head to speak of, only a slight outer ring so small I can't even determine the color.  Leaves effectively no lacing.  

S: Big aroma.  Dark fruits with fig, raisin and date notes, woody oak aroma even though this is not the barrel aged one, hints of bourbon, black licorice, a small amount of booze, and a hint of vanilla extract.  Awesome.  

T: Dark fruit sweetness up front in the form of overripe plum and fig, with lots of different flavors coming through on the back end including coffee, dark chocolate, and roasted malt. As it warms I get a big toffee character, which is great. I also pick up burnt toast, some vanilla, a nutty character, and a subtle hint of booze that only comes out towards the end of the glass. This is well balanced and so complex, taking your palate through multiple flavor levels with each sip.  Really fantastic, bordering on perfect.  

M/D: Smooth, about as full bodied as you can get, with appropriately low carbonation, and a sticky, somewhat chewy mouthfeel.  Coats the palate nicely, and has a whole body warming characteristic.  Amazingly, I get almost none of the massive 13.5% ABV, either on the nose or the tongue, impressive!  Even with the ABV masking, it's still a sipper due to the thick consistency and massive flavor profile, but that's how big old ales and barleywines should be, and all things considered the drinkability is actually quite good.  

O: Wow, what a beer.  Not for everyone, as this is a big, bold brew. But if you are a fan of the style it's an absolute must try.  Does this beer get better with barrel aging?  I'm not sure it can, as there isn't much room for improvement, but I can't wait to try the BB4D and find out.  Highly recommend.   (1,911 characters)

12 oz. bottle from 2009 served in a snifter

A - Very dark amber/red with almost no head. Lacing is minimal, save for a tiny ring floating atop this beautifully-hued ale.

S - Toffee, raisin, fig, and a little vanilla.

T - Surpasses the delicious nose from sip one, with caramel, dates, and no small bit of alcohol heat. As time passes, raisins, tobacco, brown sugar, molasses, and prunes are tasted, with the dried fruits featured prominently. The finish is both sweet and slightly bitter, ensuring that it doesn't grow cloying. This beer shares many flavors and characteristics with a good tawny port and is ideal as a digestif.

M - Very warm and no carbonation. The sweetness never becomes detrimentally syrupy, which amazes me.

D - Obviously a sipper, but not because it's hard to drink - I forced myself to take only small sips over an hour or so, as this is a rare treat and deserves to be enjoyed as such. However, the beer never required me to slow down due to being overbearingly sweet or strong. This is a huge beer; drinkability is great for what it is.

I'm a massive fan of Fourth Dementia - it's in my top 10 without a doubt. It absolutely explodes with flavor, and the blend is perfectly suited for my palate. If you like Old Ales, this should be near the top of your to-drink list. (1,300 characters)

Dark, murky, and a little orange. Small head and spotty lace.

Smells incredible, like if Hibernation and JW Lees had an 11% baby. Toasted nuts, dark fruit/raisin, caramel maltiness, raw dirt, and strong cooking wine.

Tastes just as good. Sherry or Port (I get them confused a lot), fig, raisin, and another fruit I can't place. There is also a cranberry tartness that works well.

Mouthfeel is somewhat thick and creamy with soft little bubbles.

Very drinkable for an Old Ale. (479 characters)

Pours into a nice tulip glass at the brewery, chestnut colored and thick- looking. The smell is complex with a musky caramel and roast malt smell. Taste is heavenly- evolves over a few minutes from a smooth, somewhat sweet caramel and roast malt to a musky and oh- so slightly vaguely herbal flavor with malt predominance. Really beautiful in the mouth with just the right amount of heat. It was easy to slow down and enjoy this beer over an extended period of time, given the number of flavors going on here, and even easier to order another. Not necessarily easy to get off the stool and walk home without stumbling, though at 9.5%. So worth it, though. (655 characters)

2008 Vintage, an extra from a most generous trader, hoppymeal. Thanks a million D! The brown 12oz. long-neck pours into my Chimay chalice a deep rootbeer-ruby with great clarity and about a 1/2" of khaki, dense foam. Subtle, yet perfect carbonation for this style.

Sweet and malty, estery fruity nose that unfolds with complexity as it warms. Reminds me of sweet mead and raw honey. Dark ripe fruits as well and some grassy hops in the background.

Very sweet and fruity upfront, tasting alot like honeysuckle nectar, right off the flower. Malty notes of caramel and tropical fruit follow. The alcohol comes into play at this point and adds complexity and turns to the pleasant grassy hop bitter finish, with a touch of warmth. The ABV stated on the label is 11.8%, which keeps this brew to a sipper pace. Overall really sweet, with just enough balance to make the flavors shine...tasty stuff!

Full complex body with dialed carbonation and the flavor of an Old Ale like no other...very unique indeed. Would love to try this with even more age on it and will seek it in the future. (1,082 characters)

An exceptional old ale, no doubt there whatsoever.

Straight from the tap at the Kuhnhenn pub, lucky me! Poured a dark and caramel toned amber in color with a thin tan head. Nose was a bit sweet, but also a bit smokey and woody at the same time. Had a very strong presence. Taste is gorgeous, complex and delicious. Stewed fruit, smoke, wood, heavily estery but with a delicate yet strong alcohol bite. Bits of spice, reminded of a spiced tobacco somehow also made appearances. There were so many layers going on here which became more and more evident as it warmed a bit. Carbonation was on the medium side, nearly perfect for this brew.

I was really impressed with this one, I'll definatly have to go back and get some more before too long.

On tap at Hopcat. Six bucks for a glass of heaven!

Looks a beautiful deep amber. Like Churchill's snifter waiting for a cigar to get going. Not much head but with lacy lacing down the side.

Not a lot of aroma to be found but the flavor is smooth and brandy-like, slight sweet (others liken it to marshmallow). Rolls perfectly off the palate and down the throat.

A great sensual experience to savor. Thank God I live in Michigan! (433 characters)

Aromas are the same minus the musty, oxidized qualities.
The tastes are identical and equally as enjoyable as I remember. Dark fruits and light cocoa dominate.
Mouthfeel is crazy coating and amazing.
Overall, I love this beer, considering moving to Michigan to have direct access every time this is released.

Adding 2007 Vintage tasted 1 month after 2005.
The pour had more more evident carbonation/head retention.

Aromas begin with light chocolate. with the below sweet and fruity malts as well. Less of a musty, earthy, leathery presence. Less sweet toffee and more dark chocolate.

The tastes are fairly close to the previous with lots of dark chocolate and dark fruits. Baker's cocoa becomes more apparent as it warms. Zero alcohol tastes or aromas here. This further verifies my beliefs that beer needs to be consumed within 5 years.

Mouthfeel is super full with medium carbonation; much much more than the 05 I had a couple weeks back. Glorious full finish, luscious almost.

Overall I think this beer is at it's peak after 4 years, the 6 year version showed signs of breaking down but this is freakin' epic. I am adjusting my original ranking to reflect this 2007 perfection. Although this is much more chocolatey and cocoa forward than I expect in an Old Ale, it is still probably the best example I have ever had. I just love that dark, bitter, fruit balance.

Aromas start with deep dark caramelized brown sugar maltiness and sweet toffee as well. Cocoa and dark dark cherries become quite apparent as this opens up. Lesser notes of leather and earthy/musk in the background with some inevitable alcohol as well.
The tastes follow the nose to a tee. Loads of dark caramel maltiness coupled with equal amounts of toffee sweetness and dark brandy soaked cherry flavors. Lesser notes of cocoa and earthy/leather on the back end (much less compared to the initial flavors mentioned above). Alcohol bite is non-existent which makes sense after 5+ years. Molasses and dark fruits (figs and dates) linger on the palate now that this is room temperature.
The mouthfeel is medium-full bodied with low carbonation, which I usually hate but it works here. Chewy and finishes mildly sticky.
Overall, this is a great old ale; a bit heavy for the style in the dark malt/cocoa flavor profile but absolutely still delicious. Brandy soaked toffee covered cherries is a single sentence descriptor. This has aged superbly and shows no signs to deterioration even after 5+ years. (2,574 characters)
