Belgian Strong Dark Ale |  10.00% ABV

Availability: Rotating

Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer is a Belgian Dark Strong, black in color, it has aromas of rich dry malt and a slight caramel sweetness. Rich and smooth there is not any bitterness to this full bodied beer. The high alcohol level in this beer provides some balance of it’s malty palate.

2011 Winter Solstice vintage.

Was afraid this would be dead, finding on store shelf today, but it still had life.
Nice looking foamy 1 finger head that stayed for a good while. I poured it a bit too cold into a tulip glass and let it warm. It had ample lace too. Totally black no light would shine through when held up to it. I think it looked pretty good for a dark ale, what else could I expect?

The smells lasted to the very end. Very pungent. Malts and fruitiness. Belgian.

Nice carbonation and for as sweet as it was not too sticky on the mouth
This tasted a lot like their double bock. Dark fruit plum, raisin figs. Malty and a bit sour. Got the alcohol too but not bad. This is a sipper or it gets overbearing for me. It took a long time to finish. I did not really enjoy it overall but it was worth a try.

Brewed on 4-18-05. 9% abv per the label. Pours from the 12oz bottle, with a stylized number 9 on the front, into my glass a dark, murky, deep brown color with only a ring of light tan head around the top. Seems to be a bit on the undercarbonated side here unfortunately. Brown sugar hits me first with plenty of caramel and a spicy baked bread. Dark fruits with a definite banana aroma in there. Yeasty tones round out the aroma.

First sip brings a nice sweet brown sugar, toffee, caramel maltiness with a fruity following that's lead by a nice banana flavor. I am getting a slight sourness throughout. A bit syrupy slick, it finishes with a hint of clove and a lingering yeasty afterthought.

Mouthfeel has a very mellow carbonation with a good body and a smooth, creamy finish. Goes down quite quickly actually. An interesting brew that I'm happy to have sampled, I wish I could try it fresh off tap sometime and see the differences with this aged bottle. Thanks to Crosling for sending this my way.

On tap at the brewery. Chocolate malts and on the sweet side, nitro but still spicey and decent taste. A head, brownish colour lots of lace, middling mouthfeel. The alcohol is there in aroma and taste. Quaffable. The nitro is there but not overdone and may be a twist to make it more interesting from initial batch. Nice Belgian that may turn out different with age.

12 oz. bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Murky reddish brown. Small khaki head. Thin collar.

Smell - Deep caramel. Slightly fruity.

Taste - Dramatically different. Bright fruitiness. Almost raspberry. Caramel. Slight acidity.

Mouthfeel - Lighter than the flavors would suggest. Medium body. Well carbonated.

Overal - Nothing like I expected. Very fruity.

Pours a deep chestnut brown color with a rather short dense head that settles into a light ring. Not all that impressive for a Belgian style.

The aroma is fruity and spicy. There is a noticable coriander presence to go along with a raisin sweetness. The coriander brings out a bit of a vegetal note. Perhaps some earthy tobacco but it is hard to get past the coriander.

The taste is of prune or raisin with some earthy carob. Big coriander presence which kind of ruins it for me. But looking past that, the beer has a nice bright dark candi sugar flavor and some earthy notes. The malt seems to have some subtle chocolate notes. I think I might detect some grassy bitterness as well.

The feel is light to moderate with very fizzy carbonation. Good balance between sweet and earthy/bitter flavors. ABV fairly well hidden though does pop its head out once in a while.

A solid BSDA but way too strong on the coriander. It is not a boozy mess which is a plus

A: Pours a near-black with very little khaki head that remains as a thin ring with no lacing.

S: Tart and sour cherry aromas dominate at first followed by sweet breads, candy sugar, and subtle roasted malt notes.

T: Tart fruit up front here followed by some roasted malt and slight acetic flavors. The finish is a bit roasted and tart.

M: Medium body with low carbonation, the tartness saves it from being too watery.

O: Perhaps this was an infected bottle with the acetic and sour notes, though it was not over-carbonated like most infected beers. It tastes more like a sour stout than any sort of Belgian style. Not bad, though not particularly enjoyable, either.

2012 Vintage poured in to tulip.

A - Dark brown; completely opaque. Half a finger of light brown head.

S - Dark fruit, Belgian yeast, clove, dark caramel and raisins.

T - Clove and Belgian yeast flavours up front. Dark fruit, dark caramel, raisin and a touch of cocoa also present.

M - Medium body. Somewhat thick at times and watery at other times, which was odd. Light carbonation.

12 Fluid Ounce bottle
Served in a Kuhnhenn snifter
2012 vintage

A - This beer is almost as dark as a stout. It is topped with a couple inches of head.

S - The aroma is spicy and fruity. I get some dates and raisins.

T - The taste starts out decent. The Belgian yeast spiciness comes through. Then I get a little date and fig taste. Finally, I get some roasted malt.

M - Medium

O - It is different. It started out like a normal Belgian strong dark ale. The finish was almost stout or porter-like with roasted malt.

12oz, 2012 vintage, into a tulip.

A: Pours an almost-black very dark brown color with a nice tan head.

S: Some anise, cola, ginger, cloves, prune, toasted grain, crushed grapes, caramel.

T: Taste comprises roasted malt, dried figs, raisin, anise, honeycomb, a bit yeasty, dry caramel, dark bread and a hint of booze in the finish.

M: Thick-boded with moderate carbonation. A bit sticky but the carbonation keeps things drinkable.

O: This is a nice BSDA that I wouldn't mind drinking once and again.
