Belgian Strong Dark Ale |  10.00% ABV

Availability: Rotating

Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer is a Belgian Dark Strong, black in color, it has aromas of rich dry malt and a slight caramel sweetness. Rich and smooth there is not any bitterness to this full bodied beer. The high alcohol level in this beer provides some balance of it’s malty palate.

A 2011 vintage, Winter Solstice. I got this in a trade. Served in a tulip glass.

Kuhnhenn's Nine pours with a dark brown body, showing off attractive ruby highlights through the cloudy beer underneath a thick tan head. The head retention could be improved, and while the beer is murky looking, it is so dark it doesn't quite matter.

As the beer warms, a malty, toasty aroma unfolds, with hints of fig pudding and a slightly oxidized wet cardboard aroma as well, though this is minimal. It promises to be a deep, rich experience.

The flavor is a mix of contrasting flavors. Up front is a rich, malty flavor reminiscent of raisins, grapes and dates. It has a slightly tangy mid-palate, almost like an Oud Bruin, but not quite so lactic. Past that vinous, vinegary flash, the finish is full of residual sugar and a sticky bread pudding flavor. The carbonation is somewhat dull for the medium bodied beer, and could use some livening up.

Alcohol is not present in the aroma or the flavor. Extremely well-hidden. The beer itself tastes past the prime, and it come off as messy, with a strange yeast funk or something that went off in the aging process. I would not recommend this beer, though I certainly think it deserves another try, with a fresher batch.

12 Fluid Ounce bottle
Served in a Kuhnhenn snifter
2012 vintage

A - This beer is almost as dark as a stout. It is topped with a couple inches of head.

S - The aroma is spicy and fruity. I get some dates and raisins.

T - The taste starts out decent. The Belgian yeast spiciness comes through. Then I get a little date and fig taste. Finally, I get some roasted malt.

M - Medium

O - It is different. It started out like a normal Belgian strong dark ale. The finish was almost stout or porter-like with roasted malt.

Pour is dark mahogany with a thin off white ring. Nose is cherry magic marker and rubbing alcohol. Taste is pretty rough, marker and fusel alcohol, burnt sugars and lots of messy malt sweetness. Medium body and oily, strong carbonation and slick finish.

12 oz. bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Murky reddish brown. Small khaki head. Thin collar.

Smell - Deep caramel. Slightly fruity.

Taste - Dramatically different. Bright fruitiness. Almost raspberry. Caramel. Slight acidity.

Mouthfeel - Lighter than the flavors would suggest. Medium body. Well carbonated.

Overal - Nothing like I expected. Very fruity.

12oz, 2012 vintage, into a tulip.

A: Pours an almost-black very dark brown color with a nice tan head.

S: Some anise, cola, ginger, cloves, prune, toasted grain, crushed grapes, caramel.

T: Taste comprises roasted malt, dried figs, raisin, anise, honeycomb, a bit yeasty, dry caramel, dark bread and a hint of booze in the finish.

M: Thick-boded with moderate carbonation. A bit sticky but the carbonation keeps things drinkable.

O: This is a nice BSDA that I wouldn't mind drinking once and again.
