2011 bottle poured into a Deschutes snifter at around 45 degrees. The pour has sort of a toasted caramel color - a dark red/orange/brown that builds into a nice dark brown in the glass. Barely any head - just a thin film in the middle of the class with a ring of roasted marshmallow bubbles.
Smells of oak, sweet bourbon syrup, roasted marshmallow, caramel, and a baked butter dough. The butter dough (i'm not sure how else to describe it, although i realize that is rather vague) keeps the back of the aroma faintly sweet and relaxing in what is otherwise a pretty forward hit of condensed flavors.
The first sip is decidedly sweet and syrupy at the onset, but quickly dissolves into an alcohol burn on the middle of the tongue and back of the throat. Flavors of bourbon-soaked raisins, toffee, buttered baguette, and a dark fruit spread dominate with a nice malted backing. It's a little thinner than i was anticipating, but not in any major way. The alcohol keeps it from sticking around too long, and the exhale flavors of hazelnut and bourbon are faint enough to keep lifting the glass.
This is a really wonderful sipper... I'm forcing myself to think of it as a slow sipper, because I could see moving through it more quickly than it requires. After being a little underwhelmed by the regular 4D, I'm really impressed with this - it's a strong, assertive ale that is much improved by the barrel aging. I'm looking forward to sitting on my other bottle until late next fall or so.

I tasted a bottle earlier this year and quite frankly was a bit disappointed in the lack of bourbon presence. I really can't taste the difference between this and Regular 4D. I'd rather stick with regular 4D as it's easier to obtain and not quite as costly.
