2011 vintage, shared at a tasting, thanks Chris!
It pours a syrupy caramel brown color, some red hues when held to the light, no real head to speak of, but a thin layer of film appears at the rim of the glass, no lacing, in all honesty, the beer doesn't look like much. The aromas just jump out of the glass, huge toffee and sweet caramel notes, sugary malt, a nice layer of bourbon with some oak and woodiness as well as some char. The aroma is simply unbelievable, one of the best I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing. The flavors are wild, huge amounts of bourbon soaked toasted marshmallow, fantastic. Candied sugar creeps in at the end with caramel and toffee, unfortunately, there isn't enough bitter wood or char to completely counterbalance the sweetness and after about 3oz, the sweetness became a bit much for me. Still a wonderful palate but I feel that the flavors are a bit simpler than the wonderfully complex nose. The body is spot on, thick, syurpy with perfect medium/low carbonation.
Verdict: Awesome old ale, probably the best I've had and one of the better barrel aged beers I've ever tried. A home run.
