12oz. bottle poured into a snifter. 2010 vintage. Huge thanks to steebo777 for the bottle!
(A)- Pours a thick burnt sienna color. Produced some tan to transparent bubbles; not surprising considering the ABV.
(S)- A nice smooth yet rich dry oaky caramel and vanilla richness. Bits of fig with a surprisingly balanced boozy finish. Not an overwhelming booze bomb like I was anticipating.
(T)- Very similar to the smell. A really nice dry charred oak character. Some nice fig and caramel. Ridiculously smooth, yet rich. The bourbon barrel aging really has been integrated very well into the overall character of the beer; it did not overpower it, but rather enhanced it.
(M)- A mellow carbonation level, yet fitting for the style. The ABV is expertly hidden; in no way does this feel like 13.5%. Rich and sweet, but has a really fitting mellow charred oak note that fits right into the mix.
(D)- A fantastic old ale. Rich and sweet, yet complex and smooth despite the ABV. Very well done. I find it very rewarding to see a beer that actually benefits from barrel aging and in this is a shining example how it should be. While I might just barely favor the regular non barrel aged version, this is still a top notch beer in its own right.

Notes taken on my phone a few nights ago. Huge thanks to my cousin Sonny for sharing this one with me, an all-time Want for me. Wish I had my notebook but the notes will have to suffice.
A- Poured to a wine glass with a dark brown almost opaque body. Small foamy white head forms but quickly recedes to the edges as a small ring. Spotty lacing for the most part but some nice patches around the glass.
S- Deep bourbon and huge old ale aroma blasts out of the bottle, I could smell it right as I broke the seal. Bourbon is not alcoholic feeling but quite smooth while remaining strong aromatically. Rich caramel sweet base and some raisin, slight cocoa dark malts.
T- Follows the nose very well, rich and decadent old ale with a great barrel bourbon feel blended in. The old ale base reminds me of a less sweet Old Stock, big raisin and dusty aged caramel. Bourbon is a bit peppery and has vanilla oak notes. Slight dusty dark cocoa feel.
MF- Super thick bodied with a semi-creamy but mostly oily feel. Carbonation at a moderate low level but suits what is happening. Finishes with some sweetness and a soothing warmth on the palate.
Right up my alley. Super intense Old Ale flavors and huge but ABV well hidden. The bourbon barrel is strong but the base has a ton complex flavors of its own.
