Huge thanks to KKulacki for giving me this bottle while I was visiting Ann Arbor.

Poured into a chalice.
Deep murky brown. Sludgy with slow rising bubbles. Slight lacing / tan head with legs. Looks intense.

Nose is strong sweet bourbon. Brown sugar. Oak and malt. Very nice.

Taste is a wonderful kick in the pants. Sweet intense malt, sugary and syrupy, dense chocolate, lingering strong bourbon with warm ethanol tingle. It's a sipper.

Excellent mouth feel... foamy and full.

Overall a fantastic big beer. One of the best I've ever had.

2010 Vintage

A: Looks exactly like the non-barrel aged version. It pours out of the bottle a hazy brown with a finger or so of light head. The difference is that the lacing and retention have taken a blow. Not really anything left to assess after only a few minutes.

S: If it's even possible, Barrel Aged 4D is more boozy than 4D. The Bourbon accents the alcohol, the combination of which overpowers the malt and dark fruits. Other characteristics are there, but bourbon, oak, and booze are just too strong for them to be taken seriously. As the beer warms, however, more roast and molasses come out.

T: The taste absolutely saves this beer and is the highlight of both offerings. My word, this is like a gourmet dessert. The booze is there, but allows the other parts to shine as well. Overall it's hard to describe. Mellowed to perfection between bourbon, caramel malts, molasses, deep dark fruits, booze, and vanilla. It's amazing how no one flavor comes out and dominates the beer. For this to have such a high ABV and be this mellowed, I'm blown away.

MF: I can't believe how fast I drank this beer. It's heavy with a low amount of carbonation, but the finish is clean and sweet and the booze is not even close to offensive. Complete 180 from the non-BA version.

O: Could not have been more impressed. I saw the "99" rating on here and had my doubts, but it delivered. The barrel treatment added to the beer, which is something I really look for in a good aged beer. I'm thinking a few years really helped curb the alcohol and make this beer stand out. I'm not a fan of Old Ales, but I highly recommend this.

2011 Vintage. Pours a thick, murky, reddish brown with a very small, light-tan head. Scent is VERY inviting! Fire-roasted marshmallow, toffee, candied dark fruits...mmm, this thing smells good. Lovely bourbon with a nice caramel malt balance. Vanilla and coconut as well with some roasted nut aroma. Almost sherry-like. Taste is immediately sweet candied dark fruits with sweet bourbon and vanilla flavors. Nice balance of toffee and nutty flavors. Some definite boozy bourbon flavors. Very well-balanced. Mouthfeel is somewhat syrupy and creamy...warming. Drinkability is high for such a big beer. Definitely a sipper. Overall, this beer is very tasty and I am happy to have been able to try it. Such a great beer, all around.

Bottle (2010) poured into a tulip glass. Beer pours a mahogany brown, with some lighter brown colors, with no head on a vigorous pour. There is some carbonation visible at the edge of the glass when you look at it, but clinging to edges instead of rising. Plenty of alcohol legs when swirling.

Aroma hits you as soon as you open the bottle. Intense dark caramel, toffee, roasted nuts, chocolate, spicy graham cracker. Excellent barrel notes, vanilla, earthy and oak, aged leather. All this without smelling boozy at all, amazing.

Taking a sip, sweet toffee and caramel mixing with the oak, chocolate, nutty flavors. As the beer warms on the tongue, some of the lighter vanilla and spices comes through. Finish is warming from the alcohol, but all the flavors linger on the tongue.

Medium to full body, fairly well carbonated with a good amount of soft bubbles for such a big beer. Definitely a sipping beer, as it's packed with flavor. I should have just started drinking this beer at cellar temperature or just lightly chilled, as the aroma is so intense.

Poured into a baby snifter. 12oz bottle split with a friend into a couple tasting snifters.

Pours a dark mahogany color with.deep brown and red hues. Barely transparent. There is a small, thread thick layer of cream colored head. Oily lace.

The nose is a sweet malt overload. Bourbon is blended so nicely as it doesnt take the spotlight at all. Some soda bread, brown sugar, light vanilla, and deep caramel are noticed.

The taste has a full, rich abundance of caramel, biscuit-like malt, some prunes, raisin, toffee, all the while bourbon flows freely and evenly. Heat is noticeable but not deterring in the slightest. A bold flavor profile far from what others bring to the table.

Mouthfeel is big-bodied, rich, sweet, and beastly. Creamy with low levels of carbonation.

Overall, this is the most extreme, complex, and thick old ale I have come across. Very impressed, maybe even blown away. Awesome Old Ale. Seek and Destroy

Bottle to oversized snifter (2011 vintage). Looks good; deep and complex. Smells Great; bourbon, vanilla, and quality beer. Can't wait for e next step. Tastes outstanding! Blows Curmudgeon's Better Half out of the water. Mouthfeel is good, especially for the abv. This is a phenomenal beer that I'll make a concerted effort to get my hands on again in the near future. Best Old Ale I've ever had.
