This is our 4th Dementia Olde Ale that has been bourbon barrel aged. This ale has an intense sweet caramel malt flavor and aroma that develops into a toffee/toasted marsh mellow like character.

Had on-tap at the Kuhnhenn Brewery on a paddle.

Appearance: Pretty nice. About a finger of a tan head and surprisingly decent lacing. The beer is a dark brown color with red when held to light. Looks better than I expected... I thought it may look flat.

Smell: Compared to the standard 4D ('11), this had a lot of caramel. There was also quite a lot of darker fruits there as well. The vanilla notes that you'd expect from barrel aging weren't really there all that much. A very nice smelling beer all the same.

Taste: Having side-by-side with the regular 4D, this was definitely a bit more mellow, as one would expect given the barrel. It's not a huge difference, but it's noticeable. The mouth feel is maybe a bit thicker. The taste itself on this one just isn't on par with the regular 4D... of course, that's just my humble opinion. The BB4D mellows out the fruity notes quite considerably and replaces them with a maltier, sweeter flavor. It's still excellent, but not quite as tasty.

I'm extremely happy to have gotten the chance to try this beer. I don't think it's as legendary as some people said it would be (like I said, I preferred the standard '11 4D), but I liked it. Recommended.

Served out of a bottle.
This beer appears a very dark brown, with little head, and minimal lacing.

The smell is bourbon first, and slowly going to toffee

Taste, just like the smell, all begins with bourbon. I am instantly reminded of Sucaba. It has a lot of bourbon, chocolate, and sweetness, fading to dark fruits/dates.

The mouthfeel was a little too boozy for me, but not at all unbearable. About what I expected out of a beer like this.

Overall, a great Old Ale, probably on of the best I have ever had

2012 vintage reviewed on 6/26/13. Poured into a over-sized snifter.

A: Pours a cloudy dark deep brown. No head is present, tiny amounts of lacing cling to the outside of the glass.

S: Huge caramel, sugar, dark fruits, vanilla, oak all laced in plenty of bourbon.

T: Spot on the nose, but much deeper. Huge caramel sweetness, vanilla, oak, bourbon, caramelized sugar and a hint of dark fruits.

M: Full body, low carbonation. A slight hint of heat trickles down your throat to remind you, this is indeed at 13.5% BA beer.

O: Overall, ridiculously drinkable BA old ale. It can be a bit sweet at times but as soon as I think that I get vanilla/oak/bourbon and remove all doubt. This is a world class BA old ale. Seek it out, drink it. Enjoy.
