Appropriately enough, Kuhnhenn DRIPA has a head like a rice cake. It is bigger and more sturdy than I previously thought possible for a rice beer - the first dispelled assumption of many. Indeed, as the ale's deep and radiant daisy yellow colour would indicate, this offering is full of character...
And pretty much all of which comes courtesy of the hops. As one should expect from the style, and as I've simply come to expect from this brewer, the aroma has a vibrant hoppiness that packs a wallop of citrusy punch. Orange and grapefruit lead the way, soft florals follow. It's dynamic enough one only really needs one nostril to appreciate it.
Rice, like corn, is heavily demonized in the craft beer world, and rightly so given that these adjuncts are typically used to dumb down flavour and save on costs. Most commercial beers that use them are, frankly, terrible, low-quality lagers. But this need not be the case necessarily.
In fact, when utilized properly these adjuncts offer substantial advantages. Rice's blandness provides arguably the ideal backdrop for a hop-boasting IPA. Point in case: Kuhnhenn DRIPA. The flavour of the rice is as plain and white as the rice itself; it's a perfect canvas on which to paint bright brushstrokes of lemon yellow, grapefruit pink, tangerine orange, and lawn clippings green.
Indeed, what makes this beer so irresistible is the lack of toasted breadiness or caramel sweetness that customarily detract (or at least distract) from the ambrosial, tropical characteristics of the hops. Here, however, they're given a neutral, relatively light-bodied frame to display their full glory. The stage is theirs, the spotlight fully on them. If you're a hophead, sit back and enjoy the show!

16oz. draft at Crunchy's in East Lansing.
A - Pours a golden straw with a one-finger foamy white head. Light amount of sticky lacing.
S - Aromas of floral hops, pineapple, mango, and biscuity malt.
T - The taste follows the aroma. Upfront is a nice mix of biscuity malt and tropical fruits (pineapple and mango). The finish has a nice amount of resinous hops with some grapefruit.
M - Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Very smooth and creamy mouthfeel.
O - This is an excellent DIPA. For a 9.5% beer it is very drinkable. Lots of well rounded flavors. Delicious.
