Got this one a few years back and never entered my review. This one poured a deep, dark brown color, with no head to speak of. Aromas of booze, candied fruits, prunes, maple and vanilla. On the palate this one is full bodied, boozy and way too cloying for my tastes. Flavors of bourbon, roasted malt, syrup and dark fruits.

12oz bottle into Portsmouth snifter. Huge thanks to the generous northernbrews for this sending me this beer.

A: Pours a deep dark raisin color with no head. There is a thin ring of bubbles clinging to the collar, but it's negligible.
S: Uh-oh. Pretty heavy oxidation on this one. There are scents of raisins there, but I get notes of way over-ripened fruits, soy sauce and gastric acid as well.
T: This beer just tastes old. It's not as bad as the smell, and once the initial flavors of soy sauce and cardboard fade from my palate I get booze notes of raisins, chocolate, toffee, walnuts, vanilla, maple, sherry and oak. The finish is boozy and still noticeably warm. Overall, big flavors of soy, chocolate, raisins and woody.
M: A few bubbles on the palate remind me this beer is not completely flat. Mouthfeel chew enough due to the full body.
O: Not bad, but not as good as Kuhnhenn's other beers, and definitely past its prime. I was excited for this one, but unfortunately most of it went down the drain.

12oz bottle into a snifter. Thanks to Chris and Tony for busting out this rare blast of craziness.

A: Pours a dark ruby-brown body with practically no carbonation. Flat, clear, and viscous. Intimidating seems to be a good word to describe this one. I'm a little scared.

S: Hugely sweet, and just as crazy as I expected. Rum-soaked raisins, bourbon, plastic, and a touch of soy sauce. Yeah, it's over the top (WAY over the top), and not every component is exactly what one might desire, but I'm loving it for its sheer exuberance.

T: Ridiculously sweet, fruity, boozy, and (again) crazy. Raisins, bourbon, dates, toffee, brown sugar, and booze. Wow.

O: This one benefits from the abolition of the "drinkability" category, as only the suicidal could call this drinkable. It's an experience, though, and one that I'm glad I had. My tasting group and I shared this one after going through a three-year vertical of BBBW as well as a comparison of 4D and BB4D, and it was fun to see the progression in terms of fruitiness and sweetness as the barleywines got older and the dementias got added. While clearly the inferior brew, this one was easily one dementia more insane than BB4D, maybe even one and a half...

Cheers!

Thanks to semibaked for this bottle. Shared with the La Crosse tasting group during our battle of the 12ozers. Poured into snifter:

A - Flat. Brown sugar color around the edges and deep brown in the core. No lacing, some legs.

S - Bam! A huge bright boozy sweet punch in the face! Caramel, bourbon and toffee. A bit of teriyaki sauce. Leather and dark fruits.

T - Taste follows the nose. Brown sugar, caramel, dark plums, cherries and raisins. The barrel is pretty hot with this one, but its not too bad.

M - Hot burn but kind of expected. A bit drying but smooth. Feels like I'm drinking whiskey or bourbon straight.

D - Not the easiest one to drink but surely a pleasure. I've been searching after these Kuhnhenn brews for a while and am stoked that I've finally had the chance to try them. This one might need a bit more age, but still pretty good.

Bottle. Pours a dark cola like brown/red color with very little head. Leaves nice legs on the glass. The aroma is heavy chocolate, cherry, vanilla, raisin, and bourbon. Medium/heavy mouthfeel with very little carbonation. Very sweet start with dark fruit, caramel, cherry, chocolate, and leather. Surprisingly very drinkable but pretty sweet as well. Warming alcohol. Really, really nice.

side by side with 4th dem and ba 4th dem

Pours hardly and head. Color is a dark caramel brown.

Aroma: I like the smell of this one better than the ba 4th. It has deep bourbon notes with a lot of dark chocolate and cocoa. Oak and vanilla. Cherries and raisins are the dominate 'fruit' flavors.

Taste: Raisins, cherries, dark dried fruit flavors. Chocolate and cocoa. The bourbon is very apparent. It has light tobacco notes. Oak and a bit of spice.

Mouthfeel: Warming and smooth. Not as sweet as the ba 4th. Full bodied with a lower amount of carbonation. Ends a tad dry, but clean.

Overall, another solid old ale from Kuhnhenn. This is very different from ba 4th, but they score similar for me. The reg 4th we had was a 2009 and it tasted kind of like fruit punch. It was still really malty. Each of these beers were great for their own reasons.

Thanks to MasterSki for this one!

This is a dark crimson colored liquid with big hints of dark amber tinting. Minimal carbonation produces a tiny head that dissipates even quicker than it arrived. Not so much lacing as just some nice oiliness. Very viscous.

HUGE oak notes. Hints of bourbon and vanilla. Light traces of tootsie roll. Minor oxidation hints. A good deal of dark fruits.

Dark fruits are surrounded by lots of thick, chewey, chunky chocolate notes. Milk chocolate that falls just short of tootsie roll. Good hints of roasted 'dark' nuts. Figs, pecans, brazil nuts, filberts, dates, assorted berries. Lots of oak notes, almost hinting at cedar. Light traces of vanilla and caramel. Finishes with a very sherry-like character.

Just barely full-bodied, but nicely viscous, which helps it a lot. The carbonation level is not even really noticed, physically, yet it provides a slight 'buzz' of alert activity to the mouthfeel.

I'm guessing that this one is probably more than the 15.00%abv that 'regular' Fifth Dementia is, but it drinks like it's in the 9.00% to 12.00%abv range. It provides a very pleasing warmth and is flavorful enough to encourage you to keep lifting the glass, much quicker than planned on.

Vintage: Unknown
Type: 12oz. Bottle
Glassware: Portsmouth Tulip

Tasted at The Epic Sweet & Sour Tasting I at The General Lafayette Inn & Tavern w/ wunderbeer(Ron), ShadesofGray(Ryan), and big Dan.

Pored a brown mahoghany in color w/ minimal head and lacing. The nose was of dark fruits and booze. The taste was of dark fruits, booze, and basement mustiness that all presented themselves on the back of the palate in a weird way. Mouthfeel was thin as if this one was on it's last leg. Drinkability was pretty good for the style.

Overall, a pleasure to have sampled, but somewhat disappointing. Looking forward to sampling this again to compare another bottle.

Thanks to bu11zeye for sharing this bottle.

The beer pours a dark brown color with a tan head. The aroma is chocolate, bourbon, oak, soy sauce and sherry. The flavor is chocolate syrup, booze, soy sauce, sherry and oak. Low carbonation and a medium-thick mouthfeel.

12oz bottle shared by bring - thanks, Barry!

Pours somewhat hazy dark brown with minimal head.

Aroma is very rich with caramel, toffee, chocolate, oak, and some sherry oxidation.

Flavor is pretty nice. Sweet toffeeish and chocolatey malts, mild roast, oak barrel, bourbon, vanilla, sherry, and peanut butter on the finish.

Medium-full body with low carbonation. Just a little bit of booze.

Good stuff overall. An interesting beer. I like that Kuhnhenn packages their big beers in 12-ouncers. That size is way more manageable than bombers/750s, and I'm almost inclined to bump up the drinkability as a result of that.

Shared by bring at his Kuhnhenn tasting. Dark opaque brown, completely flat but quite viscous with decent legs. The aroma is intense, hot and bourbon-forward. Soy sauce, toffee, molasses, oak. Huge on the palate, sweet and rich, big bourbon and oak flavors with notes of leather and tobacco, molasses and earth. Viscous and intense, but it's a pretty nice sipper.

Another great share by GodofThunder.

A: Pours a brownish hue with amber tones showing through. The head was tan in color and it disappears about as soon as it shows up.

S: Aromas of full of dark fruit, booze, and barrel notes.

T: Lots of sweet candy malts like caramel and toffee. Hint of dark fruit, oak, vanilla, and booze.

M: On the fuller side of medium, nice carboantion, little burn in the finish.

D: Rather good. Another great share by Jay.
